On Wednesday, financial news service MarketWatch produced a chart that Republicans are going to have a tough time explaining away. Here's the upshot: over Barack Obama's four years in office, federal spending will rise a mere 0.4 percent.
So that raging inferno of debt and out-of-control spending that Mitt Romney and the rest of the Republicans hammer on relentlessly? On Hardball on Wednesday, Salon's Joan Walsh cut to the chase: "What's the biggest lie they’ve told so far? Birtherism is vile, but it is really a crackpot fringe. This might be the biggest lie of all," Walsh said.
"You take sheer mendacity, and you multiply it by the number of people who believe it...that’s the Joan Walsh formula for the biggest lie....And it's frankly devastating."
Take a look:

Joan Walsh and David Corn pointed out that Mark Halperin enabled Mitt Romney in lying. Halperin allowed lying from Mitt romney. Halperin allowed the lies. Matthews mentioned that without allowing the lies there would be no further interviews. Matthews quipped that "President" Romney press conferences would consist of Fox and Forbes, because they would give him good interviews. The question immediately, however presents itself as to why Mark Halperin would be excluded from a Press conference for "President" Romney, along with all other media outlets who allow Republicans and Mitt Romney to lie, under their watchful eyes. Romney would probably allow, in this fanciful Matthews' scenario, any media which adopted Fox tactics, like Mark Halperin did in his interview with Mitt Romney. Mark Halperin posesses brilliance of intellect, and at this moment,, he is just another corporate cog. Corporate media fellow Halperin allowed corporate candidate fellow Romney to lie. What is the common denominator? Corporate, that is what clearly seems to be the picture to a lot of folks. We see corporate media enabling corporate lying in furtherance of corporate designs on the Presidency. Romney seems more and more like a corporate bio-morphic mannequin. Media seems more and more corporate.
reveal5,
I believe Halperin always has a agenda! I saw interview with him on Charlie Rose yesterday, he seems to go off on some tangent with little regard for fact or reason. He was suspended once from MSNBC for behavior (I believe)!
Corporate bio-morphic mannequin, I love it!
Halperin should be ashamed of himself. Wow. Rachel Maddow hit the nail on the head tonight when she spoke of the utter inability of most of the press to ask an intelligent, knowledgeable follow-up question and call these politicians out for their lies.
When you add $6T in debt, 8.2% unemployment and $4.00 gas prices, it's really indefensible. Numbers don't lie. In the words of the president "it's simple math".
All MSNBC shows should be talking about this chart! Please Matthews, Maddow, O' Donnell and all the other great hosts of MSNBC, spread this chart so it becomes viral and top news everywhere. Instead of taking the bait from the GOP and talk about Cory Booker, you should only talk about this GOP lie!!!
Make it known to America, that the GOP's central argument against Obama is a blatant lie!!!
Jump of budget spending from 19.5% of GDP to 24.5% of GDP was result of GDP shrinking. Budget revenue fell too mostly by the same reason. Deficit jumps up from 3% to 10% of GDP.
If Obama deserves any blame for any of these changes it is only one thing. He has no idea about economy and nevertheless accepted presidency. Really the problem is that there is no good outcome for situation in current social system and next or after next president will be forces to adopt new paradigm. And we already know by evidence of health insurance reform that Obama and present generation of democratic party politicians suffer intellectual impotence. They must be swept out until too late to keep sleeping under teleprompter declamation of false hope moving toward the cliff.
You're so cute. Facts have no effect on you what so ever. When the Clinton administration left us with a balanced budget and a surplus, a Republican President, House and Senate only had to tweek social security, medicare, medicaid the tax code etc., to keep this country on track but because the Republicans have absolutely no clue with regard to any aspect of running an economy other than how to ruin one that's exactly what they did. They took an ideal situation left to them by the Democrats (the only shot the Dems had in 30 years of Republican mismanagement) and blew it big time. To actually try to claim that the REPUBLICANS have ANY understanding of the economy is laughable.
This current Republican House and ALL of the Republicans in Congress since Obama has been elected have purposefully been sabotaging this economy since 2008 and they have admitted it openly even writing a book about it. But we don't need a book to see that.
Try to rationalize all you want but facts prove not only the incompetence of these Republicans but 3 decades of Republican economic malfeasance.
Sed,
As you understand well, the nut-jobs above, will keep pronouncing their "batsh*t" over and over!
Question: Will voters remember, or just have selective memory (only hearing what they want to hear)?
What is promising: Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania & maybe Florida in Obama Corner?
Not so promising: Romney favorable/unfavorable rating was piss poor, but has rebounded and trending positive, it's like all primary crazy talk from right has just disappeared from voters mind?
sedwinmars,
Balance budget at 2000 was produced by efforts of republican speakers Gingrich and then Hastert isn't it?
Clinton was good president no doubts but reason was that he is extraordinary intelligence person (opposite to affirmative action student Obama) not his ideology. He could be even better president if prostitution was legal and respected occupation as it should be in any civilized country.
By the way. Ask your pal Andrea why Greenspan supported Bush Tax Cuts. It was so astonishing revelation on the record he offered once...
Gingrich and Hastert? Ha Ha Haaa. Gingrich et al shut down the government twice in an effort to stop Clinton dead in his tracks and lost huge numbers in the polls/elections which FORCED him and his "boys" to compromise with Clinton. They fought him tooth and nail! I'm not saying Clinton was a purist by any means but many on his staff were old fashioned Keynesians which is what saved our economy.
That is exactly why all of the Republicans have been obstructing Obama now for three years straight! They don't want the Americans to see another Democrat success in the wake of 30 years of Republican economic failure. Seriously, read a book. Take a class. Study economics of any kind PLEASE!
No matter how you want to rationalize your parties failure, under Bush it was ALL REPUBLICANS, PRESIDENCY, HOUSE AND SENATE, so you can't parse it there can you? Republicans don't get it!
sedwinmars,
I appreciate that you believe in magic effect of words "Keynesian economics". They are sort of Harry Potter spell for you. But I don't believe in supernatural. Try express your ideas in terms these have definitions - tax level, unemployment, GDP, interest rate, debt, productivity, effect of global competition, limitation of natural resources. Can you? I don't think so, pank.
What's to get? Repub Club wants to tear down everything from Johnson Great Society programs to FDR! If you think about it, why would Bush W. Admin. squander the budget surplus?
Give money to the mostly haves, make as big deficit as possible, than drown social programs blaming spending on dem's!''
Then resort back to ideology and keep hammaring away their batsh**! It might work?
Ricky,
Maybe when you sober up an read this post of yours do apologize for pollution of intellectual sphere of the planet? So slovenly expressed frustration for suffering Hey-syndrome it is.
Poor Sir Leo...This is the problem with the under-educated. Keynesian economics is a theory or system of economics just like Reaganomics ie. Supply-Side economics i.e. VooDoo economics i.e. Friedman economics. The latter is a system supported by Reagan/Thatcher and all the Republicans but proved as faulty by all real, educated economists since its inception, because in reality its been used for centuries. It's used to make the aristocracy rich at the expense of society (the lower classes, the general welfare and the overall infrastructure of a nation).
Take a course on economics and a course on political philosophy. Speaking from personal experience these are great courses especially the latter. As a person who loves science/math and went 90% in that direction at University, I still thoroughly enjoyed these courses. Don't worry taking a course won't indoctrinate you into a philosophy, a party or a religion despite what the right wing media tells you but it will actually help you understand what these politicians, pundits, and corporate elites are doing and talking about and it might help you understand the terms you are using.
Poor arrogant sedwinmar aka Lawence of Unkinds,
This phase in your enumeration of fashion politicians-ecomomist slang:
shows that you wasted your education and time... Aristocracy keeps itself rich by means of inheritance, really by brute force, landlords they are. Really there was invented very simple solution to aristocracy problem - guillotine. Issuance is the name of the game but again your sandbox is so small and soiled by magic you believe in.
Just for curiosity sake. Did your "education" include "Capital" by Marx? I guess not. Straggle about 35 vs 39.6. Hilarious innocent children, repdems.
Aristocracy gets its money from inheritance its keeps itself rich by investing and stealing. Aristocracy seldom participates in brute force, brute force is used by Aristocracies employees just like machines are used by other employees. Some landlords are Aristocracy and look how the banks as landlords stole trillions from their fellow Americans just a few years ago with the help of the deregulating Republican's in the Presidency (Bush), the House and the Senate.
I'm assuming you mean "Das Kapital" by Karl Marx and of course I did. I read that as part of world history in Prep School (High School), in my sophomore year. Your point?
sedwinmar,
No special point. I was always fancy about his idea of "surplus value". It has direct connection with "fairness" and as such with current president campaign. Really what is fair, by Marx everything is product of workers and Ronmey with other entrepreneurs and inventors are parasites on their bodies. Pure politically I don't think that Obama wants to be directly connected with Marx.
Sir Leo, again I am not being facetious or sarcastic here you should take or even just audit classes on economics and political science. I believe you would thoroughly enjoy them.
sedwinmar,
I understand that in your bread is TV-personality of understanding and teaching others. But here everybody is equal. Furthermore common situation is I am making comment and you, other moron or both of you feel obligated to respond. As for me I will be perfectly happy if you will ignore me. Can you? Or my influence is too dangerous for your band to keep unchallenged? So I am more important here than you... so what good gives you these courses of empiric economics anecdotes and cooking books how to sell yourself as strategist and polluter.
LeoKrut,
You talk, blay, blah, blah, blah, blah, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, And you still say nothing! It's like your entire thought process revolves around some right-wing bumper-sticker, with the same depth too!
Your critiques are nonsense!
I assume that English is a second language for you, which would explain why you sometimes explain and argue the way you do!
SEDWINMAR gave you some good advice, take a couple political, economical & US Gov't basic classes, you might learn something, but make sure you do not take them at any right-wing school or strip mall bible college, OK!
Vet Romney no matter what he says about distractions!
This is interesting- especially if true.
