President Obama called on Congress Friday to reconsider his jobs bill, which failed in Congress last year.
“There’s no excuse for not passing these ideas…they will work,” he said.
The president echoed remarks he has made repeatedly in recent months that he believes the economy is doing well, but there is more to be done while speaking at a press conference at the White House Friday.
“State and local government hiring is going in the wrong direction,” he said, noting layoffs of cops and teachers. “And the other sector that has still been weak has been construction. We’ve addressed those issues in our jobs plan.”
When asked by a reporter about the Republicans’ opposition to Obama’s economic policies, the president critiqued the GOP.
“The recipes they’re promoting are the kinds of policies that would add weakness to the economy, result in further layoffs, and I think most economists would predict, lower growth,” he said.
Obama became the most agitated during the presser when a reporter asked about the White House’s role in recent leaks regarding national security policies, including a U.S. terrorist “kill list,” and the use of cyberweapons against Iran.
The Senate has opened an investigation into the leaks.
The president asserted he has a “zero tolerance” policy against such leaks and those found guilty of such acts “will suffer consequences.”
“The notion that my White House would purposely release national classified information is offensive,” he said. “People need to have a better sense of how I approach this office.”
Noting such leaks put the safety of Americans at risk, he added “We don’t play with that.”
The presidentalso touched on the Eurozone economic crises, saying he has “been in constant contact with Europe leaders over the last two year.”
“The challenges they face are solvable,” he said, pointing to reforms needed to the financial system and in job growth.

Scott...Landlords, who have privately owned apartments, will help really good tenants sometimes. But only if they have the skills necessary to do a good job. They will let a professional house painter paint a room, to work off some past owed rent. Because they do not want to lose a good renter that has been with them for years..
All apartment complexes owned by groups of investors can not because of insurance liabilities. and contractual liabilities. A worker must be a licensed contractor and sign guaranteeing the work for a certain limit of time.
But they do not let unskilled renters work on their apartments.
These insurance requirment on liability is one reason that home owners don't hire a un-employed man from down the street to help him around his home...If the man got hurt insurance will not pay. If the man was walking up to your door and fell down they would , but not if you have hired him.

The GOP is trying to make hay about President Obama's remark about the private sector doing "okay". Sure there are problems in the private sector for small businesses but large corporations made $2 trillion last year. This year large corporations are already on track with about $1 trillion in profits so far. So while you can argue that the words President Obama choose could have been more precise, the facts are that the private sector is doing fine at least if you are a Fortune 500 company on Wall Street. Manufacturing has been showing steady job gains since last years. Many of the job losses have come from the public sector as revenue strapped states and cities are forced to lay of teachers, fire, and police personnel. Small businesses and smaller companies on Main Street are suffering from a lack of demand for their goods and services because cash strapped middle class people have little money to spend.
The laying off of public sector workers such as police, fire, and teachers are absolutely the worst thing that could happen right now in a soft economy. It should have been a no brainer for Congress to keep workers with jobs employed during this recession. Once the economy picks up steam then the federal aid won't be needed any longer. Once these workers lose their jobs they no longer participate in the economy nor do they pay any taxes. Both small businesses and local government are hurt when their are no more paychecks for teachers, fire, and police. This condition is totally inexcusable because Congress should have passed the American Jobs Act that would have alleviated much of these public sector job losses by giving states loans and money to keep public sector workers employed.
President Obama has rightly pointed out that Congress has been sitting on his American jobs Act since last September. The House of Representatives are duplicating the Republicans under Herbert Hoover. President Obama has asked for numerous infrastructure bills and other measures in the American Jobs Act. President Obama has rightly pointed out that many of his proposals have received bipartisan support in the past. Congress has sat on much of his program for job rejuvenation. So if the GOP in the House does not want to follow President Obama's American Jobs Act where is the GOP jobs proposal? The answer is "missing in action". The GOP bitches and whines about the unemployment rate. but when put to the test of supporting proven infrastructure and other historical bipartisan job creation measures, the GOP sat on their butts and did not do anything of substance to promote jobs. Speaker Boehner is a spineless coward and the Tea Party Republicans are right winged radicals more concerned with rhetoric and hatred of President Obama than doing anything positive to promote jobs for America.
Lest we also forget those miserable Republicans in the Senate. There have been at least 150 filibusters in the Senate this session of Congress. Many other judges and jurists that are listed as fully qualified and competent by the bar and by the vetting process for the federal judiciary have been delayed with no up or down vote. Remember when Republicans bitched about George Bush's federal appointments? The GOP in the Senate has barred far more qualified Obama appointees than Democrats ever have. Mitch McConnell has said his number one job is defeating President Obama. What about all those unemployed workers you were sent to the Senate to help out Mr. "Darth Vader" McConnell? The GOP does not give a damn about the country only their own radical right winged ideology that will tear down America.
President Obama needs to go on national television again asking for a major jobs bill even bigger than the $450 billion American Jobs bill. President Obama should ask for a $2.2 trillion infrastructure bill paid for by bonds and taxes that fixes our roads, bridges, water and sewer lines, ports, airport, and other infrastructure. If the GOP in Congress says "No". Then the President should go on offense and stay on offense about the "Do Nothing' Sit on their butt worthless GOP Congress". The President needs to go into every swing state and explain that he can not pass jobs bills without Congress. President Obama should call Mitch McConnell and John Boehner out on every bus stop telling in every and each town how many jobs have been lost because the GOP would rather see America fail than create jobs for unemployed workers. The President needs to call out the GOP endlessly and repeatedly because radical partisanship is more important than seeing American workers find jobs. Most voters know that the Congress has to pass spending bills. Let's see how that line of attack would work for the obstructionist GOP come November.
One more thing must be said about the GOP. Many of the relentless attacks on President Obama are made because of racism in the GOP. Say whatever you want the GOP has many Tea Party people who would fit right in with the John Birch Society or the KKK. President Obama has been subjected to a relentless assault comparing him to "Nazis", "Socialists", apes, or dogs by idiot "birthers" and other groups bent on seeing him defeated in November. Most of these irrational attacks are made because many of the white people in the GOP are afraid that the age of the white man is slipping away.
I served in the Army under women, blacks, Hispanics and other minorities both as a subordinate and as a supervisor. What matters is what is in a person's heart and how they treat other people. As long as a person tries to do their job and is honest its all that really matters not their gender or their skin color. What matters is that we work together as a team to get the job done. I think many conservatives have not learned this lesson. It's really irrelevant if someone is black or a woman as president. All that matters is that they try to do their job competently and try to build the country up. The GOP wants to tear the country apart by these relentless racially motivated attacks, so the rich get richer and the poor and middle class flounder with the business cycle. This is not a vision to compete against the BRIC countries in an interdependent global economy of the 21st century. But when you are intellectually deficient like the GOP leadership is today, what else could you expect? These conservatives who would rather live with the ignorance of the past because they are too stupid to adapt to the challenges of the future. If voters support Mitt Romney America will stagnate and Asia will rapidly replace a complacent America that has forgotten how to be competitive in a global economy.
The Repubs promised to block him every step of the way and we're succeeding. He promised to turn the US into a West European hell hole. Guess what? He's out in Nov.

Jerry is a typical clown from the right who really seems to have contempt for blacks and women. Like many right wingers on this blog, he is a dinosaur from a different time whose attitudes for women and minorities have no place in modern society. He should have had enough exposure to civil rights even in the 1960's or 1970's military to not have so much contempt for minorities. I will be the first to tell you that it is sometimes hard for blacks, whites, and women to always get along but you just keep working on things the best you can. Usually problems get ironed out with good leadership and communication skills.
The problem with Jerry's viewpoint is a thing called the law. Federal law and military regulations clearly state that you can not discriminate against people because of race, gender, religion, or marital status. If you start discriminating against people in the work unit you will soon find yourself reprimanded. If your behavior shows consistent patterns of discrimination such as overt sexism or racism that effects another person's career your career will end quickly regardless of whom you are. Sure being in the military is about winning battles but if you do not have a cohesive working team because of discrimination, favoritism, etc. that unit's combat effectiveness starts to rapidly deteriorate. Today's high tech military has to have highly trained technicians and people who can work together as a team. There is no time or place for racism, sexism, or homophobia that causes discrimination in the work place. The corporate sector and business world need to follow the excellent example of America's military which seems to be far ahead of where many people in the Republican/Tea Party are living today. Most companies that are good have already been doing most of this for a long time because government contracts specifically state discrimination because of race, gender, etc. is against the law.

Look at the development of the transcontinental railroad. The Congress sent the U.S. Army out to survey the land establishing forts to deal with issues with native Americans. Next the Congress gave very generous land grants to the railroad companies to build tracks across the continent. Equally important, most of the technical and engineering management skills were provided by former military officers trained at West Point. Next the federal government gave contracts to the railroad to haul freight and troops for the War Department. These contracts were vital in keeping fledgling start up railroad companies in business. Also the development of the railroad greatly spurred the growth in the commercial sector by promoting agriculture, mining, and logging as well as other industries. The U.S. had over 250,000 miles of track by WW I. The bottom line of this story is simple: without the subsidies, technical engineering skilled manpower, and land grants there would have been no transcontinental railroad built in America.
This bottom line statement of a big government and big business partnership applies to developing industrial strength to fight two world wars, the Cold war, the Space program, and domestic infrastructure such as the TVA, city airports, dams, and the interstate highway system. Government has to look 20 years down the road to develop infrastructure, schools, colleges, and the other critical components that make an industrial society hum. Corporations are focused on the short term quarterly profits and annual dividends statements for shareholders. Corporations are by there very nature myopic in vision. The job of government is to be a strong partner that looks 20 years down the road to make sure infrastructure, education, and technical training needs are met to meet the needs of the future. Corporations do not generate wealth on their own but only function in an eternal partnership with big government. Government makes it possible for corporations to exist period. There would be no market or commerce without the federal, state, and local governments working close together in partnership. We can argue about what the relationship between government and business should be. But to deny that government has a no role in modern society is a suicidal endeavor when face stiff competition from the BRIC's in the hyper-competitive global economy of the 21st century. Like country legend Hank William's song called "Lost Highway" about a drunk cowboy who has passed up many important things in life for the bottle, the policies of the GOP are a "lost highway" leading to a destination to nowhere in a twilight zone of complete denial about what makes a modern economy work.
