This Sunday's episode of Melissa Harris-Perry featured a roundtable discussion about the politics of black hair.
"For me, black womens' hair—the politics of it seem obvious," said host Melissa Harris-Perry. "But I realize it may not be obvious to everyone, particularly, maybe, to our viewers who haven't encountered these questions before."
What followed was a discussion of those questions and the history of them. "I think Tracie Thoms, a fellow actress, she said it best," said Nicole Ari Parker, an actress currently starring in a Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire. "Very simply: It's amazing that it's considered revolutionary to wear my hair the way it grows out of my head."

Naturally me for about 25 years, and staying that way!
I am so proud to be who I am. My hair is an expression of that. And it can't be imitated-try as they might!
I do love that there are so many options that Black women have in styling their hair these days. But the healthiest state for our hair to be in is a natural one.
Wanna keep hair on your head?? Well...
I would like to start off by saying, THANK YOU!
It is so refreshing to turn on my tv to hear the MHP show discuss topics that are so unique to me, my family and community. The topic of "Why Black Hair Matters" was no different. I have been natural for over 15 years now and am still amazed when the way I wear my hair is an issue for some.
I appreciated the roundtable discussion, particularly Nicole Ari Parker's comments regarding how her hair journey and recent choices were aided by her daughter's self image. I am not a hair radical by no means, but I am loving this movement. As stated on the show, not only is natural hair a healthy choice(see Good Hair), but it is a lucrative industry!
I like the fact that black hair care is starting to be reclaimed by black communities(products/hair care)...great start!
