Former Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich is standing by what critics have called racially tinged remarks about food stamps.
On Tuesday's edition of PoliticsNation, host Al Sharpton revisited some of Newt Gingrich's campaign comments on food stamps and African-Americans, and asked whether Republicans routinely use such statements as a means of appeasing the party's more extreme elements.
During his campaign for the Republican nomination for president, former speaker Gingrich had referred to President Obama as a “food stamp” president, said that African-Americans should be demanding paychecks instead of food stamps, and argued that children in public housing projects lack good role models.
“This kind of talk, this kind of language you use, is it just playing to the right wing?" Sharpton asked. He added, "Do you still defend now what you said?"
Gingrich insisted that he deserves credit for caring for African-Americans. “Having a conservative Republican that actually cares there's 43 percent black teenage employment, I would think it's a good thing," he said. "Having a conservative Republican who is eager to go to the NAACP and meet with them, I would think that’s a good thing.”
Sharpton responded by pointing out that, according to the 2010 Census, 49 percent of those on food stamps are white, while only 26 percent are black.
“You didn’t go to a white convention or say you would go there, and tell them to go for paychecks, not food stamps," Sharpton said. "To say that people don’t have people that are role models ... You and I went to south Philadelphia; you saw parents that take their kids to school. You saw black teachers."
Gingrich replied that he may not have stated his position "exactly right," but stood by the content of his argument and insisted that current policies and institutions are not meeting the needs of the working poor.

The problem with Sharpton and his half-stats is this - approximately 65% of Americans are white, overlaid with Sharpton's stat that 49% of foodstamp recipients are white, shows a less than equal relationship.
Blacks on the other hand make up approximately 12% of Americans, while being 26% of foodstamp recipients, making it more than twice as likely for a black family to be receiving foodstamps than whites.
So Newt is right (again) and not talking about this, or shouting down the truth in some ridiculous attempt to say this means Newt is racist is idiocy.
We cannot fix what we will not acknowledge.
So tell us Rev Sharpton, why are blacks suffering even more under a Black President? Why has black unemployment exploded under Obama? Why are more than ever receiving foodstamps? This is not service to the black community, this is a tragedy.

Misterwonderful, Blacks are not suffering more under a Black President. They are in the same place that they were in before he became president. They have just been joined by a large number of once middle class white (interesting that the term white includes people that most do not think of as such. like middle easterners, Northern Africans and some Hispanics. Most people think of them as non whites.)
Most people who receive food stamps are working. They are working those minimum wage jobs that the Republicans love so much. Many black families have a single mother supporting them who most likely left school to raise her first child to be supported by her mother/grandmother in a household without an adult male bringing in an income. Those women can not get most jobs without that high school diploma. She can get just a few more with it but no college degree. A circle of poverty is started again.
By encouraging the lack of sexual education and a lack of a good support system (to build the self esteem of these girls to resist the trap of poverty and get them to ignore boys for education and freedom to succeed), we are asking for this continual need for help to survive.

While 49 percent of food stamp users are white, 72.4 percent of the population is white. While 29 percent of food stamp users are black, only 12.6% of the US population is black. Blacks disproportionately utilize food stamps.

Rev. Sharpton's continued efforts to make race an issue in every discussion regardly of the topic makes him as big a racist as he claims to fight. Neither one of these men has any solutions for the problems facing America and their little debate has very little impact or insight on anything. I saw the interview and Sharpton did a great job. One thing I have to give Sharpton a lot of credit for is that he is never satisfied with the typical spin that eventually gets other interviewers off in another direction. Sharpton is tenacious and keeps coming back hammering on the attempts to change the topic. This Gingrich interview was a pretty good example of this as he tried to deflect things multiple times and Sharpton kept coming back with the same question just asked a different way.
Sharpton may not be the most well spoken idividual and occassionally stumbles around what he is trying to say, but he keeps going until it's perfectly clear. Too many other TV interviewers just let the politicians give their spin and avoid trully answering questions. Sharpton won't settle for that.
Sharpton's first few weeks on his show looked pretty bumbling, but he's learning and getting quite a bit better at it. I'd rather have that then some host that rehearses a couple well stated questions, but then has nothing when the person just tries to avoid answering the question. Sharpton is dedicated to getting his questions answered and doesn't seem to concerned about maintaining some image of his own personality. I think sometimes the more polished interviewer lets his guests get away with just giving their rehearsed talking points.
Unfortunately, there aren't too many as skilled as the late Tim Russert, but Sharpton follows his continual probing style, just not in a polished manner. I think some others are too worried about getting to their next planned question to such an extent, that they aren't really paying attention to what is said. David Gregory is a classic example of this and often seems more concerned about his own image than getting to the bottom of a topic.
Sharpton may not be slick, but I've learned to like him.

As to his 'bumbling', I actually find it endearing. He's fine when he's just speaking for himself, but reading from a tele-prompter proves to be a real challenge. Imagine reading from a moving text and making it look smooth and natural! :)

The problem is these people are "working poor" they have jobs that pay low wages therefore they continue to qualify for food stamps. They are characterized as not working lazy people living off the government. We need to address the minimum wage in this country.
I for one am tired of Walmart for example, paying their workers minimum wage and keeping the profits while the tax payer makes up the difference for their employees. You can work at Walmart or other large corporations, make min. wage and qualify for government assistance in food, health care and housing and the 6 Walmart heirs own more than the bottom 40% OF THIS COUNTRY. We should not have to support these workers while the Walton family makes billions.

While i do not agree with just about anything Gingrich says (EVER), Sharpton skews his facts quite a bit there.
His 49% of food stamp recipients being white makes it sound like food stamps go disproportionately to white people, while 26% go to blacks. Since the US population in 2010 is 63% non-hispanic white and 12% non-hispanic black. The 49% makes food stamps go disproportionately to non-hispanic black citizens by a wide margin.
What needs to be understood is this is not a race issue, it is an urban and poor issue. Majority of Black and other minorities tend to live in depressed areas (inner city, crime/drug ridden areas), The school systems in these areas do not have the money to educate their citizens causing future poverty and crime. Until this situation is addressed nationally, the percentage of welfare recipients will be disproportionately black/hispanic.

Yes, that 49% is equal to about 13% of the white population, while that 26% equals about 35% of the black population. So black people are 3x more likely to be on food stamps. Black people disproportionately receive food stamps... Good role models in the projects? Good luck.

All this talk about the wages WalMart pays its employees. At least WalMart is providing employment to more than a million workers, while at the same time putting money in their pockets. Meanwhile, the federal government (under Obama) is dinking with our economy and is responsible for millions of Americans losing their employment. a lady in my small town rented a stall by the bus stop. She had a waffle iron and a juice machine. The waffles smelled good to passersby. Soon she was selling lots of healthy fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Then she bought a huge multicolored umbrella and made a catchy sign to attract more attention. Her juices were good and helped us busy folks meet our daily need for fruits and vegetables in one of the purest ways possible. After a few months she started selling a few vegetarian rice dishes and put two tables out in front of her stall. After a year she had two employees and was looking into opening another stall. She worked hard. I think she is a capitalist? My favorite kind.

Whenever people use percents instead of raw data you can be certain they are misleading you. Prime example - Buffett pays less taxes than me because his average rate of income and capital gains taxes is 20% while my percent is 25%. Raw data - Buffett pays millions in taxes and I pay a few thousand.
Blacks get 37.2% of the food stamps while Whites get 46.2%. So it is Whitie that is abusing the system, not the Blacks!

Blacks would receive less than 1/5 the food stamps given to Whites by per capita but in fact they get 4/5 as much - so there is a factor of 4 times as much going to Blacks than Whites, Mr. Sharpton!
But this is not the issue. The comments by Newt were to the fact that Blacks are in forced dependency to the federal and local governments and have been especially so for decades in the big cities that are controlled by Democratic machines. Newt is suggesting that it is more compasionate to break them free of this enslavement - whether voluntary or involuntary. I guess if one feels that they are not capable of living on their own, then the liberal position is more accurate, but I find such thinking racist!

Hmm. About 70% of the general population is white, comprising 49% of the welfare rolls. About 18% (less than that by some estimates) of the general population is black, comprising "only" 26% of the welfare rolls. I assume the other 25% is divided amongst all the other minority races? ONE percent less than the single minority race gets?
So there are roughly 4 times more whites than blacks in the population, but blacks get about half as much welfare as whites. And somehow the simple numbers of 49% versus 26% proves something to people like Al Sharpton? It only proves that, once again, they are making empty excuses and straw arguments. Check the per captia ratios and you'll find that there is a larger percentage of the black population on the welfare rolls than of the white population.
I'm not arguing that there are no mitigating factors as to why a larger percentage of blacks seems to be on welfare than other races. I'm simply pointing out that empty excuses don't help solve the problems this country, and black people in particular, are facing.

You gotta just love how Al slants those numbers! Because also according to the 2010 Census, 72.4 percent of our population are white, while only 12.6 percent are black. So, when you break it down by population, why is the percentage of food stamp recipients who are black more than twice as high as their population percentage? While for whites, the percentage of food stamp recipients only account for roughly 2/3 of their total population percentage.
Sounds to me like whites are being short changed when it comes to food stamps! Thank you for pointing this out, Al! What needs to happen now is we take away food stamps from 13.4 percent of the blacks and another 10 percent from "other", then redistribute those food stamps to white people so it all evens out population percentage wise.

If you want to redistribute the food stamps that way, then re-distribute wealth and income the same way. That's known as communism and we know how that works... it doesn't. The sad part is that so many working folks need food stamps.

The blacks and white "do-gooders" will tell us that we arfe racist, but blacks can throw out any figures, and whether they are true or not, they are correct and intelligent. They always throw welfare, medical insurance in our face. We 99% pay taxes every turn we make. In gas, products, state, fed and you name it. The problem really is that our politicians blow billions and billions of our dollars bailing out these gamblers in the financial market plus giving our tax payer money away to foreign countries. They give breaks to the billionaire, oil companies, insurance companies and drug companies. The American drug companies charge us Americians almost twice the amount that they sell to foreign countries.
The politicians love it when we argue over welfare or medical insurance. While the lobbyist puts millions of dollars into our politicians pockets.
At times I feel the majority of us 99% have no brains on seeing the true facts of where our tax-payers money is going. Which works in the favor of our government giving billions more to other countries.
