Every U.S. president has endured hecklers, harsh criticism and crude jokes at their expense. But in light of Friday’s incident in the Rose Garden, where Daily Caller reporter Neil Munro shouted questions at Obama as he was trying to explain his new immigration policy, Michael Eric Dyson was compelled to ask The Ed Show audience: is this part of a larger issue?
Citing several recent incidents, including Jan Brewer wagging her finger in the president’s face, racially-tinged language from the Tea Party, and Congressman Joe Wilson screaming "you lie" in the middle of a health care address, Dyson asked Politico’s Joe Williams if this is just plain old disrespect, or if these types of episodes have even more disturbing roots.
“I’ve got to ask the question here,” Dyson said. “Does this have anything to do with the fact that this is the nation’s first black president and the level of disrespect is alarming and stunning?”
Williams said he’s concerned about the pattern he sees unfolding:
“It’s very difficult to place race outside of this context. Mostly because a lot of the interruptions, a lot of the disrespect has been unprecedented. We haven’t seen anything like this before. A lot of people will suggest that it’s because the Republican Party has moved so far to the right that they’re willing to do things that were unthinkable. But certainly in my experience, it’s hard to divorce that because this president doesn’t look like the others, and not only do we have a lot of these sort of interruptions, and disrespect towards the office, in more than my view. I mean, many people in the Twittersphere and a lot of practicing journalists were aghast at what had happened.”
Daily Caller editor in chief Tucker Carlson defended his reporter, saying Munro was just doing his job. "A reporter’s job is to ask questions and get answers," he said, adding "We're proud of Neil Munro."

Neil Munro erred. He should not have interrupted the President's remarks. Strike one. He could have apologized for interrupting the President but did not. Strike two. Now he claims that he simply made a bad timing call on guessing when the President would end his remarks. Really? Clearly Neil Munro needs to be sent back to the minor leagues for additional training before he strikes out. Munro doesn't seem to handle the big league of reporting well.
With the disrespect Obama has for the American people and our Constitution, which is the rule of law in our Republic... the reporter should have thrown his shoe at him while he spoke. He didn't interupt Obama. He asked the question as he was concluding his remarks, aka Dictator mandate, which is a slap in the face of Congress and our Republic. The amount of vehement opposition to President Obama's centrist policies (most of which were originally Republican ideas) can really only be explained by racism. If the GOP had some other solutions to problems perhaps we could have a policy debate. Obstructionism and not offering your own new ideas on any substantive public policy issues precludes any meaningful policy debate. The GOP seeks to tear America down while President Obama wants to build it up. The Senate GOP does nothing except filibuster, offer objections, and failure to give up or down votes for fully qualified jurists with excellent credentials when the federal courts lack enough judges to hear all the cases. All of these actions simply means that GOP has an irrational hatred of President Obama. The right winged extremists in the GOP want to tear the country down.
The hatred of President Obama is completely irrational because again President Obama has been a strong national security President. Many of his domestic ideas are based on Republican ideas like health care reform. President Obama has been very centrist in his policies. The auto loans were essential for our national security because both GM and Chrysler or their corporate subsidiaries or subcontractors make tanks and infantry vehicles like the Stryker and trucks for the U.S. Army and the military. Letting our auto industry go bankrupt would hurt national security. General Dynamics makes lots of vehicles for the military but these vehicles use designs and parts from GM, Chrysler, or other companies that make spare parts for GM and Chrysler. Letting these automakers go bankrupt was not an option period.
Look at the Affordable Care Act that the GOP so vehemently opposes. The individual mandate was a Republican idea supported by Bob Dole and Newt Gingrich less than two decades ago as a response to what they called "Hillarycare". The insurance exchanges were also used by Mitt Romney in Massachusetts. Where is the logic here? So the hatred of President Obama is racism pure and simple. If the GOP had some new ideas other than slogans like "tax cuts for the wealthy good, big government bad" etc. but all you get from the GOP is the same horse manure on a different day. Many in the Tea Party belong in the John Birch Society not regular American society.
That's why the Tea Party movement cleaned your clock during the 2010 Congressional elections and have since in state elections leading up to the 2012 election this November. The GOP obstructed the Dream Act last year. President Obama asked for this legislation to be passed long ago. So the President making the policy changes means that young adults who grew up in America will be allowed to stay in America. Why anyone would be against children raised in America from staying in America, regardless of the actions of their parents, strikes me as nothing but ignorant bigotry against helpless people? Sending children raised in America into adulthood strikes me as being unconscionable. Again, as President Obama explained allowing the "Dream Kids" to stay in America is the right thing to do morally and is fully in synch with traditional American values of treating human beings with basic dignity under the rule of the law. What is the GOP position anyway on immigration? Does the GOP want to round up 11 million undocumented workers with their families who have been here for many years, and send them back to their native countries at gunpoint? This is something out of a fascist police state not the United States of America. We need a path towards citizenship for all these 11 million mostly Hispanics and better guest worker programs so agricultural farmers get the workers they need to harvest their crops etc.

I always love it how conservatives have non-substantive responses to help solve America's problems. 50 million uninsured Americans and they oppose their own ideas for an individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act. 45,000 uninsured Americans die from treatable conditions annually. But a conservative does not care about those who die from our inferior medical system. We spend twice as much per capita as any industrialized country on the face of this earth for second rate medical care that ranks 30th in public outcomes.
Conservatives don't care about fixing America's problems that no market can solve. All conservatives care about are quarterly profits for their corporate masters in the health insurance industry. In the mean time we have the most expensive but worst medical care in the industrialized world. We can thank conservatives for this state of affairs. Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand all have much better health care at half the price than we do in America. We spend 17% GDP on health care while all these English speaking countries spend between 9% to 10% GDP. U.S. doctors and nurses are fine but the problem is the whole private health insurance industry that places quarterly profits in front of human beings welfare. It is unconscionable to defend our overpriced and dysfunctional health care system but conservatives are too ignorant to have a conscience.
We also talk about the economy. Many bills have been proposed by the Democrats to help improve the economy and create jobs. President Obama has supported large infrastructure spending bills that would put many hundreds of thousands of construction workers back to work quickly. The GOP has filibustered or refused to consider the American Jobs Act because it would ask the richest Americans to pay Clinton era taxes. Again the conservatives do not care about human beings in America who need to go to work. Conservatives only care about making the economy fail so Americans who are hurting continue to hurt. What a hell of an attitude to have. We should call Mitch "Benedict Arnold" McConnell a vile excuse of a human being. Because he is a traitor to our country and the middle class while serving the plutocrats. But we all know the GOP performs political fellatio on their corporate contributors by giving them "kickbacks" in the form of deregulated environmental laws, tax cuts, and protected subsidies in the form of corporate welfare for mature industries that don't need them.
We can go on down the line and talk about infrastructure. The GOP has filibustered all kinds of infrastructure bills that would put Americans immediately to work. The American Society of Civil Engineers has put our infrastructure maintenance backlog at a whopping $2.2 trillion. Our nuclear plants are 40 years old and need replacement. Our infrastructure, roads, bridges, power grids, sewer and water mains, levies and dams are critical for our country's future growth. We should have 90 votes in the U.S. Senate for funding our infrastructure maintenance. The GOP has filibustered about 150 plus bills just this session. So America falls behind our BRIC and Asian Pacific Rim competitors all so that the rich in America can have more tax cuts. All the good jobs in the future and good high tech start up companies will go to our competitors instead of here in America.
Conservatives do not understand that infrastructure, higher educational attainment and technical educational attainment are fundamental to determining whether America will compete in the 21st century or Asian countries kick our butts because they are competitive in the global economy and we are not. Conservatives are setting America's children up to fail against the ferocious competition we all face today. If we keep this political polarization up and nothing gets accomplished on energy policy, infrastructure, higher education, and more investments in our chronic unemployment problem it will be an Asian 21st century not an American one.
Healthcare is a business....a for profit business. It always will be.
Without the profit motive the band aid or the MRI never would have been invented.

What we are seeing is fear on the part of the ruling class. They (powerful white men) are seeing the tide change in America, and it frightens them. The first African American president, rising numbers of Hispanics in the country, the near future possibilty of a female president and the white man is afraid. He no longer is the go-to guy. His power and influence is erroding and that scares him. What does any frightened person do? They strike out at those they fear the most. Racism and bigotry has just been hiding in this country: It never went away. It is once again rearing its ugly head because this country is afraid to deal with its continuing issue of race in America in a meaningful way.
To the white folks planning to vote for Mitt Romney: Go ahead. You think that he will hurt black folks and help you. Ask yourself one thing. Are you a part of Romney's socio-economic class? Are you a member of the country club, do you have a car elevator in your home? Do you even have a home that you can afford to live in comfortably? Sometimes GOD gives you what you "think" you want. So, if you think Romney will be good for the country, by all means, cast your vote in November for a man that doesn't recognize a donut, insulted NASCAR fans that had on inexpensive rainwear, refused to eat cookies and lemonade that had been prepared for him.

Bottom line up front: The wealthy in America received huge tax cuts during two wars. The wealthy should be required to return all of those Bush tax cuts and pay a surcharge rate of 70% to help balance the budget for their GOP wars. I did not vote for George Bush nor did I want my measly $200 tax cut because we ended up paying more local property taxes that same year because federal aid was cut short for schools and state governments. So for the middle class the Bush tax cuts were a joke. We ended up with higher local property taxes to make up for the cuts in federal programs. This is a fact conservatives always gloss over. Property taxes in Minnesota went up 40% for the average home owner from 2000-2010. Property taxes also went up in other states that I lived in during this time. So the Bush tax cuts caused a big shift to local property taxes as public schools and cities faced cuts and layoffs because of cuts in federal aid.
It should be remembered that George Bush got us in unnecessary war in Iraq that killed 4,300 Americans killed and got at least 40,000 wounded. Total cost for the war in Iraq will be about $3 trillion plus long term. Many tens of thousands more have PTSD or brain trauma from roadside bombs. Those weapons of mass destruction were none existent in Iraq. More importantly Bush ran down both our economy and the war in Afghanistan was largely forgotten allowing the Taliban to make gains because Bush did not prosecute the war in Afghanistan because of lack of troops and resources. So we became hopelessly bogged down in both places and President Obama got to clean up both messes. Wouldn't it be nice to turn off a war like a water faucet. The problem is getting out of an insurgency war can take many, many, years. But when you don't study history you don't know the difference between your butt and a hole in the ground which is the case for most conservatives who blog here.
I can not think of a single thing that the Iraq war has done positive for America. Saddam is gone but was it worth $3 trillion and almost 50,000 casualties? The answer is "NO" and during the process Bush ran down our economy causing a serious recession. Giving tax cuts to the rich in 2001 and 2003 doubled the national debt. In fact the reason we have trillion dollar deficits today are because of the GOP tax cuts and the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities stated that the reason we have ongoing trillion dollar deficits are because the the GOP Bush tax cuts and the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We would be in a budget surplus if we did not have these two huge tax cuts and the two wars to pay for.
If you are going to fight two wars George W. Bush should have raised taxes on the rich up towards at least 70% for the highest earners. Wars are not cheap endeavors. All told the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will cost $4 trillion long term. Nobel Prize winning economist Joe Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes, both professors, compiled the total cost of Iraq at $3 trillion. It is very disingenuous of Republican apologists to blame the deficit on President Obama. The Bush tax cuts are still in effect to the end of this year being extended in the hope that the GOP would negotiate in good faith and to help the economy. Neither hope has turned out to be true because the tax cuts being extended have not created middle class job growth.
Conservative apologist love to spread the conservative myth that working class and middle class people pay no taxes. This statement is total and complete hogwash because working class and middle class people typically pay about 30% plus in all taxes state, federal payroll, and local taxes. Rich people pay about 15% total income because much of their income is taken in the form of capital gains that is taxed at a lower rate than income. I can remember paying federal income taxes, state income taxes, Social Security, Medicare, and deductions for dental programs from my military paycheck every single month for every year for 20 years. We also paid local sales taxes, special assessments, fees, and of course local property taxes every single month of the 20 years I served on active duty. I even have the LES's (Leave and Earning Statements) to prove it. People who serve in the Army pay taxes just like all Americans who work pay taxes including the poor, only the poor get hit harder.
When local sales and property taxes are added up most middle class people pay nearly 40% of what they earn in taxes. The military is a typical middle class pay scale job so if this was the case for me it is the case for nearly all other middle class Americans. Again working civilian jobs I notice that the tax rate is about the same. If you throw in college tuition and health insurance premiums middle class Americans pay about 50% of what they earn. Try running a family without paying for your kids tuition or health insurance. According to professor David Cay Johnston the average American pays about 50% of his earning for taxes when health insurance and college tuition are added up. This is equivalent to what Germans pay in taxes only the Germans get much more for their tax dollars than Americans do. Government services in Germany are excellent including infrastructure, education, mass transit, and universal health care. Most Germans speak flawless English but few Americans can speak German.
Checkout professor and tax expert David Cay Johnston's "9 Things the Rich Don't Want You to Know about Taxes", from an April, 2011 article in the Willamette Week, Portland Oregon. The article asserts the following:
1. The poor pay plenty of taxes especially regressive sales and federal payroll taxes that stop at $106,800. Even the poorest Americans pay sales and federal payroll taxes.
2. The wealthy are paying a much lower tax rate than the poor. Much of this is due to capital gains taxes that are taxed at 15%.
3. Corporations are also paying few if any federal corporate income taxes. Tax rates for both the rich and corporations are at their lowest level in generations.
4. Many European countries have better overall quality of life measures than Americans have. Europeans use the buying power of the government to get better deals for their citizens. Bullet trains, mass transit, schools, and universal health care give Germans for instance, a higher standard of living than Americans.
If you are a conservative bitch and complain all you want. The Europeans make capitalism work for the individual while American capitalism only works for the plutocrats at the top. Where are our bullet trains, commuter rail, and excellent universal health care under the American version of capitalism for average working class people? Germans sell lots of high precision machinery and machine tools to China and are making plenty of money in the Asian market. No one is saying America can become exactly like Germany but the modern German system of capitalism takes care of human beings better than the American version of capitalism. Say what you want on average ordinary Europeans have higher standards of living than most average ordinary people in America. Corporations tend to ripoff people in America more than they do in Europe because the Europeans regulate and enforce their laws. I have lived in Europe for four years and I absolutely know this to be true. American conservatives are ignorant and parochial low information idiots.

The Obama administration asked for passage of the Dream Act in 2010. The House passed it and it received a majority in the Senate of 55 votes including several GOP Senators. The Dream Act bill was filibustered by the GOP in the Senate requiring 60 votes. The Republicans obviously hate children and families because no thinking person should be against the Dream Act. President Obama has also asked repeatedly for comprehensive immigration reform but the GOP House sits on its butt and does nothing on immigration. Immigration is a heavy lift requiring leadership in both parties or else nothing can get done. So conservatives can bitch all they want. The cause of the immigration problem is GOP obstructionism and filibustering the business of the American people. Border security has been stepped up by President Obama because conservatives and lots of Democrats demanded it.
I wonder why nobody mentioned the incident a while back where several GOP politicians used the term "tar baby" then tried to claim they were not aware it had such racist connotations. How can any reasonably educated American over the age of 30 not know that?

I just watched a taped interview of Obama in sept 2011 he cleary states that it is against the law for him to do this.
