Rep. Luis Gutierrez predicted Monday that support for President Obama's decision to stop deporting young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as kids will only grow stronger once the public gets an up-close view of the people whose lives are affected.
On The Ed Show, host Ed Schultz noted poll numbers showing that 49 percent of Latino voters say Friday's announcement makes them more likely to vote for Obama. And Gutierrez, a Chicago Democrat, added:
Wait for two months down the road, when tens of thousands of people make lines [to receive work permits]. Young people, smart people, Americans. When people start talking to them and seeing the people in the lines, and you see them getting their work permits and their work documents, wait till then. This is, for the Latino community, a real civil rights issue ... Just wait till those kids line up and you see the happiness. America is a country that loves its children.
Gutierrez didn't make the comparison, but the dynamic he predicted is similar to what's happened on gay marriage and gay rights generally, in which public opinion has grown more favorable toward gay people as they've become more visible.
In response to Obama's announcement, Mitt Romney and his fellow Republicans have suggested that Obama should have left the issue of immigration to Congress. In an interview Sunday, Romney criticized Obama for having "jumped in", though he repeatedly refused to say whether he'd repeal the order if elected president.
But Gutierrez told Schultz Obama had fixed a problem Congress wouldn't. He noted that in 2010, the House passed the DREAM Act, but it died in the Senate after a Republican filibuster.
"All the president has done is do through executive action exactly what Marco Rubio's legislation would have done," Gutierrez added. "Give them a work visa which is renewable. Would [Rubio's] have been permanent? Absolutely. But this is a solution to a problem."

WASHINGTON (AP) - For the first time, the influx of Asians moving to the U.S. has surpassed that of Hispanics, reflecting a slowdown in illegal immigration while American employers increase their demand for high-skilled workers.
An expansive study by the Pew Research Center details what it describes as "the rise of Asian-Americans," a highly diverse and fast-growing group making up roughly 5 percent of the U.S. population. Mostly foreign-born and naturalized citizens, their numbers have been boosted by increases in visas granted to specialized workers and to wealthy investors as the U.S. economy becomes driven less by manufacturing and more by technology.
"Too often the policy debates on immigration fixate on just one part - illegal immigration," said Karthick Ramakrishnan, a political science professor at the University of California-Riverside and a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. "U.S. immigration is more diverse and broader than that, with policy that needs to focus also on high-skilled workers."
"With net migration from Mexico now at zero, the role of Asian-Americans has become more important," he said.
About 430,000 Asians, or 36 percent of all new immigrants, arrived in the U.S. in 2010, according to the latest census data. That's compared to about 370,000, or 31 percent, who were Hispanic.
The Pew analysis, released Tuesday, said the tipping point for Asian immigrants likely occurred during 2009 as illegal immigrants crossing the border from Mexico sharply declined due to increased immigration enforcement and a dwindling supply of low-wage work in the weak U.S. economy. Many Mexicans already in the U.S. have also been heading back to their country, putting recent net migration at a standstill.
As recently as 2007, about 390,000 of new immigrants to the U.S. were Asian, compared to 540,000 who were Hispanic.
The shift to increased Asian immigration, particularly of people from India, China and South Korea, coincides with changes in U.S. immigration policy dating to the 1990s that began to favor wealthy and educated workers. The policy, still in place but subject to caps that have created waiting lists, fast tracks visas for foreigners willing to invest at least half a million dollars in U.S. businesses or for workers in high-tech and other specialized fields who have at least a bachelor's degree.
International students studying at U.S. colleges and universities also are now most likely to come from Asian countries, roughly 6 in 10, and some of them are able to live and work in the U.S. after graduation. Asian students, both foreign born and U.S. born, earned 45 percent of all engineering Ph.D.s in 2010, as well as 38 percent of doctorates in math and computer sciences and 33 percent of doctorates in the physical sciences
Several bills pending in Congress that are backed by U.S. businesses seek to address some of the visa backlogs, through measures such as eliminating per-country limits on employment-based visas or encouraging investment in the sluggish U.S. real estate market. They have stalled amid broader public debate over immigration reform that has focused largely on lower-skilled, undocumented workers.
In recent years, more than 60 percent of Asian immigrants ages 25 to 64 have graduated from college, double the share for new arrivals from other continents.
As a whole, the share of higher-skilled immigrants in the U.S. holding at least a bachelor's degree now outpaces those lacking a high-school diploma, 30 percent to 28 percent.
"Like immigrants throughout American history, the new arrivals from Asia are strivers," said Paul Taylor, executive vice president of the Pew Research Center and co-author of the report. "What's distinctive about them is their educational credentials. These aren't the tired, poor, huddled masses of Emma Lazarus's famous inscription on the Statue of Liberty. They are the highly skilled workforce of the 21st century."
The findings are part of Pew's broad portrait of Asian-Americans, immigrants or U.S.-born children of immigrants who come mostly from China, the Philippines, India, Vietnam, Korea and Japan. Now tied with Hispanics as the fastest-growing U.S. group, the nation's 15.1 million Asian-Americans are slowly becoming visible as founders of startups in Silicon Valley, owners of ethnic eateries, grocery stores and other small businesses in cities across the U.S., as well as candidates for political office and a key bloc of voters in states such as California, Nevada and Virginia, according to experts.

Projected to make up 1 in 10 residents by midcentury, Asian-Americans as a whole tend to be more satisfied than the general public with their lives and the direction of the country. They lean Democratic, prefer a big government that provides more services and place more value on marriage, parenthood, hard work and career success.
The Pew study also revealed wide variations among Asian subgroups in poverty, employment and education, which sometimes belied their typecast as a "model minority." For instance:
-Poverty: As a whole, Asian-Americans had a poverty rate in 2010 of 11.9 percent, lower than the 12.8 percent for the general U.S. population. By country of origin, however, Koreans, Vietnamese and Chinese were more likely than the average American to live in poverty, at rates of 14 percent or more.
-Education: The share of Asian-Americans who hold at least a bachelor's degree surpasses the national average, 49 percent to 28 percent. Vietnamese, however, fell below the national average at 26 percent. People from India were most likely to have a college degree, at 70 percent.
-Unemployment: Asian-Americans ages 25 and older were somewhat less likely to be unemployed than the national average for the first quarter of 2012 - 6 percent compared to 7.4 percent for all U.S. workers. But in long-term unemployment, Asian-Americans fared much worse, with median duration of unemployment at 28 weeks, second only to African-Americans at 31 weeks. The national average was 22 weeks.
-Illegal immigration: While immigrants from Asia often obtain visas and arrive legally, many also sneak across the U.S. border or become undocumented residents after overstaying their visas. Up to 15 percent of Asian immigrants in the U.S. are here illegally, compared to 45 percent of Hispanic immigrants.
The National Council of Asian Pacific Americans, a coalition of 30 Asian-American national groups, called the Pew study an "important conversation starter." But the group expressed concern that the report focused too much on "one-dimensional narratives of exceptionalism" about Asian-Americans at the expense of individual subgroups including Cambodians and Bangladeshis, who suffer low rates of educational attainment. Millions of Asian-Americans also are uninsured, and poverty has increased significantly in their communities in recent years, the group said.
"The Pew study could lead some to draw conclusions that reflect inaccurate stereotypes about Asian-Americans being a community with high levels of achievement and few challenges," said Deepa Iyer, who chairs the national council. "The community is not monolithic."
The Pew survey is based on an analysis of census data as well as interviews with 3,511 Asian adults living in the U.S., conducted by cell phone or landline from Jan. 3 to March 27. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points for all respondents, higher for subgroups.

Here's my two part question ... Why would some one spend millions to obtain a job which only pays $400,000.00 a year, unless.. There was a plan to steal it all back and then some! . Why would anyone like Romney who's has money like he does run for our highest office, to help make the country better? On the immigration issue... Republications LOVEEEEEE cheap labor, so do their pals, we all know that. What Obama did was, " cut them off at the knees." This cuts into their cheap labor work force polices. Now they'll have to pay fair wages, compensation insurance, no more free rides taking advantage of the young Latinos who feel they don't have a option for a income! I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see young Latino workers over time suing and protesting over working conditions. They might be the ones who help bring back our strong labor force in our country.

Any conservative who is against the Dream Act needs to have their head examined for brain cells and a pulse of conscience. Conservatives need to explain to all of us why they hate Hispanic children who are as American as any of the rest of us. Most of these Hispanic families are working hard doing jobs many of the rest of us thumb our noses at. Don't forget either conservatives love affair with cheap wages paid to these undocumented workers or the exploitation by big banks of these undocumented workers. Pay day lenders rip these people off every time they wire money home or they wish to cash a paycheck. These Dream kids have spent their entire lives in America going to our public school system and graduating from high school. Kids don't get a choice about where their parents choose to go. Many of these Dream kids came to America when they were babies or toddlers. Many only speak English and have no friends or connections to their country of birth.
Anybody who believes these Dream kids should be deported is a sick, immoral, and ignorant person who ought to feel ashamed of themselves. America is not a police state. A police state is exactly what conservatives who believe these Dream kids should be deported are advocating. It is against basic American values to send our children or young adults who were raised in America to a country that they have no connections to. The Dream Act was filibustered in the Senate despite passing the House and getting a majority 55 votes in the Senate. Filibustering the Dream Act in 2010 was an unconscionable act of bigotry and arrogance against the will of the majority of the American people. We can thank the GOP for despicable act. President Obama is merely enforcing the will of the majority of the American people by his policy change. Get over it conservatives you are all on the wrong side of history on this issue.

Anyone who wants to send a young adult or a child back to a country after they have graduated from our public school system is a deplorable person. Our immigration laws are broken. Remember the Democrats tried to pass the Dream Act and the filibuster of the GOP prevented the Dream Act from passing despite a majority of 55 votes. This point is fundamental to why President Obama changed this policy. Its the right thing to do for our country and the Dream kids who are America's children. Border Patrol agents are at an all time high as are deportations so President Obama has done much to make the border more secure. Drone planes are also being flown on the border by President Obama's policies.
Most countries that need temporary workers have a comprehensive immigration in place with work permits promptly issued so employers and their temporary workers know the rules under system of laws. Our American system of immigration has completely broken down. Anyone who thinks otherwise is grossly misinformed. This issue is much more complex than conservatives make it to be. Large corporations hire undocumented workers as do many farmers for seasonal agricultural work. Many construction contractors look the other way when undocumented workers apply for day work. Most white middle class people do not want to pick vegetables in the hot sun, work in packing plants with blood and guts, or shovel concrete into forms all day long or work with hot tar on roofs in the South and Southwest. The list here of jobs that white people shun are too long for this blog.
Conservatives can not have it both ways. 11 million undocumented workers don't just wonder aimlessly here for no reason. Our corporations love cheap labor. American consumers love cheap food and services that these 11 million undocumented workers provide. So if you want white people to do the same jobs that these mostly Hispanic people perform then you have to support a union movement. A union movement will raise wages high enough so that white middle class people will want to do the work that these undocumented workers perform. You can have much lower cost of living and 11 million undocumented workers or you can have zero undocumented workers and have a much higher cost of living. Conservatives can not have their cake and want to eat it too. But this contradiction and hypocrisy on part of conservatives is exactly what the crux of the problem really is all about. We love undocumented workers as long as we can treat them like serfs or slaves rather than human beings with thoughts, feelings, and aspirations for their family's future.

The Dream Act passed the House and received a 55 vote majority in the U.S. Senate but the bill was filibustered requiring a 60 vote super majority. So the GOP is blocking the will of the majority of the people. This action can be defined as obstructionism. Its very obvious that the GOP hates Hispanic children from hard working families who spent their formative lives here. The GOP is being un-American and are against traditional values of supporting families by being against the Dream Act. How does it feel to be a bigot?
