Mitt Romney is calling on the hot-headed, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to give the keynote address at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., later this summer.
Hardball host Chris Matthews called Romney's pick a "blunder bus" on Thursday, saying it was like "wheeling in the biggest, nastiest weapon on the boardwalk to blast and snarl at the president."
"Romney's not going to put the big guy on his ticket," he said, insisting Christie would do the "nasty stuff" while Romney would pick a "pleasant, un-threatening fellow like Tim Pawlenty for the ticket. Christie now joins the tuba section."
The short-tempered politician made headlines earlier this month after he was caught on a cell phone video launching a verbal assault on a man who criticized his education policy while vacationing in Seaside Heights.
"You're a real big shot," Christie yelled as he walked toward the man holding an ice cream cone. "You're a real big shot, shooting your mouth off."
David Corn of Mother Jones called Christie one of the "best sluggers" the GOP has, noting unlike Romney he can "talk like a real person" and what he says "doesn't have to be translated into human."
John Brabender, a former Rick Santorum campaign manager said it showed the "Romney people are taking the gloves off and are fighting back."
Romney "doesn't want to hang out with Christie," said Matthews. "He just wants him out there doing the dirty work."

What goes around comes around...
With over 45 Million Americans on Food Stamps and around 47% of working Americans not paying any Federal income taxes who then is carrying the load for the Federal government? To even suggest raising taxes is an insult to everyone's intelligence. Stop the runaway spending by Congress and balance your budget... Stop borrowing money which our kids will only have to pay back with interest! We all need to learn again how to do more with less as the free ride is clearly over. Rome is burning and you still talk about class warfare, it’s a disgrace to past leaders and citizens of this once great nation.
Bottom line is Obama's call to raise taxes only on the rich would bring in about 87 Billion a year, but he's running a 1.2 Trillion yearly spending deficit! This is only a game for him in order to win reelection; he seems to have little interest in solving the over spending problem and getting the USA back to work with private sector jobs. Obama’s reelection platform is about two things; tax the rich and create more government jobs…
Right.... but planning to defund planned parenthood that will save a measly few millions dollars is all done under deficit reduction...
Really, what plane of existence are you living on? It's not Obama's deficit, and it would only increase under Romney. It's GOP Eric Cantor (check out #CanCantor @CanCantor) who had undermined the Great Deficit Compromise that Speaker Boehner and Obama had together forged! Wake up and give Credit where do and likewise Blame. There are plenty of things Obama may not had done good on, your rant is not one of them.
Big fat condescending bully isn't going to fly outside of NY and NJ. You keep dreaming big though Mittens.
Obama 2012. ZERO doubt.
Big mouth Matthews calling someone else a blunder bus..LOL Matthews is as phony as a Subway Philly Cheesesteak.
Blunderbuss, not Blunder Bus. It's an early form of the shotgun.
Actually, nevermind. They both work. That's one angry fat man with diarrhea of the mouth. And for some reason people still listen to him.
Like Rush Limbaugh.
Republicans sure love their angry fat men.
Angry fat man??? Is that a nice thing to say about your fellow liberal parrot Matthews?
As far as giving a speech Christie will be good. He is excellent at giving a performance, just don't disagree with him. He can get you to believe in what he is saying but he is only telling you half truths. I think the people of New Jersey are starting to find this out. Hope it is not to late.
What's the Chris Christie weapon? Is he gonna take his shirt off?
I was thinking it was a jelly donut.
His speech will be short: I am fat, if all you other fatties join me, we will win. A vote for a republican, is a vote for fat, VOTE FAT
Not much different than just about any speech Mutt gives - void of anything even close to details. His plan is "whatever Obama did, I won't do it!
I mean, at the end of the day, he's an effective speaker. He's entertaining, and I think that's going to be a good balancing act for Romney. While I don't agree with a lot of Christie's policy choices, I certainly don't get sick of watching him. But sometimes he really is too much of a character. Figure 1:
At the end of the day I think Romney made a good choice. Romney is boring as all heck (as he would say). Christie is a walking talking entertainment factory. His policies certainly leave something to be desired, I think, but it's going to make the Convention much more interesting. Just look at how entertaining he is!
It won't matter who wins each party will do what it does until the economic cliff is reached and then they will do what they have to to survive. Just like the elected officials in the euro are doing now. They will never fix things because if they do why would someone need be elected. Until we put term limits on every elected official and staffer their will never be change.
