By now you might have heard that Mitt Romney's trip to the United Kingdom is not going very well. The Guardian is keeping a running count of his various missteps—from demeaning the London Olympics to accidentally revealing classified information—and it's not pretty.
In fact, it's gotten so bad that tweeters on both sides of the Atlantic are mocking the Republican presidential candidate's repeated stumbles with the hashtag "#romneyshambles." The intent behind the hashtag is easy enough to figure out: "Romney" because of Mitt Romney, and "shambles" because his journey across the pond has become an unmitigated disaster. But figuring out exactly where the hashtag came from, and why it's so funny, requires a little background knowledge of British pop culture.
"Romneyshambles" is a bastardization of the word "omnishambles," which itself comes from a popular BBC sitcom called The Thick Of It. The show, which will air its fourth season this fall, is a black-hearted, profanity-laden satire of UK politics, set in the government's fictional Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship (DOSAC). A typical episode begins when the department's minister or staff makes a huge political blunder, which the Prime Minister's PR enforcer (an acid-tongued Scot named Malcolm Tucker) has to then fix.
In the first episode of the third season, after learning that the new minister of DOSAC is a public relations nightmare, Tucker dubs her "the [expletive deleted] omnishambles." Here's some video of the now-famous scene. Warning: like pretty much every scene in the show, it contains a lot of swearing.
Since then, the word has formally entered the British political lexicon. Scottish journalist Alex Massie even wrote an article for the American magazine Foreign Policy with a title that labels Cameron, "Mr. Omnishambles." Now, with #romneyshambles penetrating American political consciousness, our own political vocabulary just got a little more colorful.

keep opening your big mouth mutt. proving to the world how unhuman you really are.
Unhuman, perhaps. But remarkably lifelike all the same.
Moon Uno, He is remarkably lifelike, but I keep waiting for him to say he wants to "serve man"...
Key Twilight Zone music......
From bean to cup, Mitt, from bean to cup... LOL! That was awesome, I need to find this show and watch more of it. Romneyshambles! Love it!
Me, I'm wondering what the right wing talking pointers who come here will say to try to defend him...
And I'm no fan of much of British history (although Churchill is near the top of my "greatest" list), but then I'm not running for president...
When you consider how poorly Romney did in Britain, it really gives you pause as to how well he'll handle,...Oh, say,......Iran.
I can lose a few hours of sleep over that thought!
He will deal with Iran and North Korea by consoling them by shipping more American jobs over to them.
SOOTHE, LOL, Quite possible!
OMG if this is a preview of what the debates with the President will be like, stock up on the popcorn. There will be some stellar moments for sure.
Of course, taking the infamous British tabloid journalism into consideration (something quite similar to the editorial shannighans of MSNBC in its making mountains of scorn and ridicule out of insignificant molehills in political discourse) into account, Mr. Romney has done well enough with his meetings with British political figures and leaders. The Mayor of London may have been somewhat with his nose out of joint over an anwer Mr. Romney gave to NBC's Brian Williams that was stupid in its intent: "From you experience with organizing an Olympics Games, how do you think this one in London will turn out?" to which Mr. Romney truthfully and sensibly answered: "It's too early to tell!" Mind you, that was before the Opening Ceremonies were under way.
The big bru ha ha being made out of the fact that Mr. Romney pointed to a couple of issues that the media had been harping on in the preparations for the security concerns that the Olympic Games always brings about due its being a favorite target of Islamic Terrorists that 1) the security firm with the contract for the Olympics had come forward to admit that hey could not fullfill the terms of their contract as they did not have the hired security personnel aboard, and fully trained, and 2) the British Immigration and workers at their airports, ports and Chunnel railroad station in charge of security concerns for the scores of thousands of overseas visitors that were going to be streaming into their country and the city of London were threatening to go on strike.
If Mr. Romney gave a nonsensical vacuous answer, he would have been attacked for that by Mr. Williams and his version of the tabloid press mentality, and when he gave a forthright answer (my, how naive to be forthright can this guy be?), he gets skewered by the same infamous tabloid nonsense. Lets see how this all works out as to Mr. Romneys meeting with political and government leaders in Great Britain, Poland, and Isreal before we start using terms like "unmitigated disaster". Afterall, just like the Olympics itself, as to this overseas introduction trip of Mr. Romneys which is really for domestic consumption in its issues, is still too early to tell as to its success or failure.
Care to explain the Mittster's disclosing that he had met with the head of British MI6?
That amounts to a big time "Look at me, I'm so important" howler... Contrast that one with the President not even telling his family about "Operation Geronimo."
As for "British tabloid journalism," it's a bit ironic that the "Dowager Empress" of a number of those operations is none other than Rupie Murdoch himself, proprietor of Fox Noise, who also appears headed for a fall...
Keith, It is being seen as a Diplomatic disaster, not a conversational disaster between two unsuspecting unknowns, because just as when you go to a friend's wedding, you put a smile and say it's great. I doubt Mitt has any detailed information on how the Games are actually going, so just smile and flatter. He did neither, to the US's strongest supporter. Doubting the enthusiasm of the Brits before it has even started annoyed them the most.
He then divulged classified information, talking about meetings with the head of MI6 which British Politicians are not supposed to discuss - and something he will have been briefed upon.
He then called Ed Milliband, leader of the opposition in the UK, 'Mr Leader' - either forgetting his name or mistaking the UK for North Korea?
He then referred to 'looking out of the backside of 10 Downing Street' - in the UK 'backside' means ass. 10 Downing Street often refers to its personnel, not architecture. Not a brilliant statement for someone who wishes to be taken seriously.
Lastly he had a member of his press team denounce Barack Obama's lack of understanding and respect for the 'special relationship' due to his lack of ''shared Anglo-Saxon heritage'' - blatant racism didn't go down well in the United Kingdom either.
This was all on day one! #Romneyshambles indeed
Plus he "set me up" to get nailed by that "middle of nowhere" shot as well...
Watch Grandpa steal that one when he thinks nobody is looking...
...to 99wardlek.....wonderful comment......isn't it amazing....this man could actually be......the next......gulp.........President?!!! ...the 'backside' of 10 Downing...omg!!!!!!!!
Don't forget... Romney also said he didn't know if the British people's hearts had come together in this. What else could that imply, but after SEVEN years of anticipation, preparations and difficulties, Romney wasn't "quite sure" if the British were quite prepared or dedicated to this event YET!!
And, FUNNY, how once again, when documentation for Romney's involvement in the 2002 Olympics was requested... it was magically misplaced or sold or recyled or whatever. Much like his staff's computer hard drives were all bought off immediately after his governorship... or, his wife suddenly having a brand new "blind trust" THE DAY BEFORE Romney becomes governor... "Blind Trusts" which Romney calls a "ruse" himself in a speech running for the senate.
We don't even need all of that... just let Romney and Obama fairly debate without scripts and answer questions DIRECTLY (i.e. what are some of the spending cuts you propose to trim in the $1 trillion from the national debt in your first year, Mr. Romney, as you keep saying? What is ONE law you would change regarding guns in consideration of the Aurora shootings and our constant gun violence?) for 3-4 hours... just a few comfortable chairs on a stage with a panel of maybe 4 conservatives, 4 progressives and Dan Rather as moderator (HE IS objective.) No notes, no prepatory info for either. Maybe Dan Rather could read a list of some accomplishments during Obama's presidency and some "incompletes" and extend the same courtesy regarding Romney's governorship. Rather could also switch this to Obama's public service vs. Romney's 2002 Olypics activities, etc.; changing the focus so that the each must answer with their wits not with scripts. Knowledge is power. Maybe one debate a week televised nationally on ALL basic channels with a completely new panel EVERY week (I prefer Dan Rather every week, but we could have other long time, proven objective moderators, too.) These panels could include citizens in any locale which this is situated... it should be moved from week to week randomly to ensure fairness to all Americans that it could occur anywhere not just swing states... in all fairness.
These debates would be posted and REMAIN on the internet for the entirety of the campaign so anybody can catch up or go back and compare statements. Either campaign caught using snippets to misrepresent the opposition will be compelled to run retractive ads which confess to this misrepresention AND post this on the most popular internet websites - personal and news, specifically on the same websites and TV stations that they advertise on. This will drastically bring down misrepresentations and I recommend some type of similar approach for any political offices. LIES or INACCURACIES will be at the top of the news every day... on TV, on the internet, appropriately, and at the introduction to the next debate/Q&A session... starting to sound fair??
Hmmm!
Meeting with M1-6 is classified information, and the world didn't know that the Brits equivalent of our younger CIA (and that everybody knew of since World War II is some awful revelation?
In the US the standard term of address for the minority party's leader is Mr. Leader, and that is true for those Parlimentary systems also.
Diplomantic Disaster? For mentioning what the British and World's media had been running with as their lead stories on the preparations for the Olympics to get underway? The tabloid media have made this there 24 hour fub story, and the tabloid like media in the US, like this shabby network. Its hardly something we will hear anymore from except for the Obama ass kissers at MSNBC that are totally looking for distractions every day from the poor and getting worse state of our economy.
Announced today, GDP for the 2nd Quarter down to an abenic 1.5%, signifying the utter failures of Obamas wasteful and dangerous policies of borrow and spend, then threaten tax increases to pay for more spending when he has filled the U.S. Credit Card to its max carrying limit.
Time for a change' only 100 days to the election now, folks.
Actually, it is strictly classified.
Ridiculous or not the British government only admitted the existence of the Secret Intelligence Service in the 90s and Sawyer, the guy he met, is one of the first heads of it whose face is known publicly. So for him to then talk about meeting him is actually a stonkingly big No-No, probably the worst of all. The British government is very sensitive about any information whatsoever about the security or intelligence services being publicised. Combine this with the fact that the British government will have wanted to avoid giving the impression of endorsing Romney with this, it actually is a genuinely worrying thing.
@Keith,
oooooh yes, blame on those "awful" British tabloids, makes you people sound even more whiney than usual (PS. don't forget to stomp your feet, pout your lip, and say "I'm a poor billionaire, and I want my taxcuts, cos otherwise, I'll go bankrupt!")
It's shenanigans. And his gaffes are not insignificant, he manages to insult his hosts! Not only any hosts, but 'very special relationship-Anglo-Saxon-fellow-Conservative hosts, which is not only rude, but severerly moronic. Insulting Venezuelans or Iranians would still be rude, but would it cost us? Not bloody much, eh? But insulting the British, then claim you had a special Anglo-Saxon relationship with them ...
Pray tell, who are they then? Oh, it's completely overshadowed by his huge INSULTS to our friends!!
See, and this is where the lying starts, or your trickle-down-style self delusions, cos nobody got upset over ' too early to tell' (did he even say that?) but over the part where he hinted that there were huge problems... he spoke out of turn about something of which he had NO real knowledge to begin with... like he does when he talks about the economy.
Dude, you're aware that you're talking about the inherently softballing American press, right?
Let him go on an episode of HARDtalk, with Jeremy Paxton, see how he does.
They are making a big deal about nothng. What does it matter if he forgot the name of some idiot. It is not important. They are going to analyze every world he says. I am beginning to like him for saying what he thinks. That is called integrity!
Augustus,,,,,+If Mr. Romney has so much integrity why is he afarid to show his tax returns. How about his off shore accounts ????? How come he had everything deleted when he left office as governer of Mass???????? He is nothing but a lier and and will do or say anything to get in office. It just gives me the creeps to even think about someone like Mitt the Twit running our nation......
This idiot has easily managed to offend both Cameron and Johnson, two conservatives. He shouldn't be let out of doors on his own.
The Media in the UK is Totally Controlled by the Low Life Chicago Democratic Mobsters !!! Why, You Might Say ??? I guess they like listening to BS from an Elephant Eared Narcissistic Tele Prompter Addicted Blabber Mouth who has absolutely Nothing To Say !!!
The Brits are too smart to watch Faux News, so I don't think they pay any attention to what Michelle Bachman and Sarah Palin say.
WHY is it the "liberal" media whenever a Republican is wrong?? If a Democrat is wrong, nothing about the "liberal" media is mentioned then, is it? Don't forget "Faux Nooz" and all those right wing brain dead tax evading LIARS all MUST LIE per Rupert Murdoch, Owner of 20th Century Fox since 1985 and a hardcore radical right winger who not only dictates faux nooz content (always downing Democrats and LYING about the fact the government HAS BEEN SHRINKING under Obama, taxes for the middle class have DROPPED, Bin Laden is dead after Bu@!$%# claims in 2003 "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" - which was true for Bush... two huge tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and TWO wars simultaneously keeping weapons manufacurers thrilled and the military budget growing EVERY YEAR ON CREDIT FROM CHINA. Then, the big banks and Wall Street scream for cash and the American people cover their bets and bonuses. Now, we cannot get loans fast enuf to save our homes although OBAMA did pass laws to force banks to provide refinancing at lower rates. Big Banks should be broken back into state-size bank and along with Wall Street - should be regulated BIG TIME. ENUF with the RADICAL REPUBLICAN DOGMA "over-regulation" is killing job growth and "over-taxation" of "job creators" (HA HA) is stifling investment. We played that game when Bushin and Cheney stole the White House in 2000 for eight years. We need relief from right wing radical naysayers and should let the Democrats run the show for a while. If you ever took the time to look up economic influence in our country after the INVESTMENT in America by Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican, every Republican president after him has run up big debt while cutting spending on Americans in all aspects except WAR in EVERY decade. This is why Repubs are referred to as hawks and Dems as doves. War is the big thing for Repubs and, if you don't show support for the war effort, you're "unpatriotic." BULL! Let's take care of Americans with our tax dollars instead of unnecessary expensive wars that benefit a few (like Dick Cheney/Halliburton).
Little tidbits... Bush closed most of the USDA inspections centers... Halliburton (Cheney) overrode the oilriggers safety concerns which is why we had the BP oil spill... Republican wrote up the agreement that the automatic cuts to the military and discretionary spending occur if no agreement was reached... I could go on.
Bat eared would be a better description; we don't want anyone mistaking those ears for the mascot of the rightous reformers of the Republican Party now.
The media in the UK is largely owned by Murdoch, the owner of FoKKKs Nooze. But I do enjoy your fantasies about Al Capone whatever connections you see with Obama.
Al Capone cared about the poor. That is why he started the soup kitchens in Chicago. Obama also cares about the poor.
Romney is lucky they have stronger gun laws in the U.K. , he certainly didn't win any hearts and minds . (Romney's solution for the gun problem in the U.S.,win their minds). He is now officially an international Twitplomat.
.....actually Soothe, he just is officially, an international TWIT.............&;-)
Strong gun laws in Britain are what gives the British freedom of fear from being shot. The massacre of the innocents in Aurora, Colorado could end up costing $100 million plus once all the medical, criminal justice, and extra overtime for city workers gets all added up. The British realized long ago that they can not afford to have a domestic terrorist organization like the NRA in their midst. It would be nice if Mr. Cameron could impart some of this wisdom on Mitt Romney. Somehow, I think this won't be the case however.
Mitt is just trying to show to the whole world that " If I'm president, we're gonna make fun of you and we're gonna kick your ass." He's bringing RESPECT AND EXCEPTIONALISM back to America.
Great comment Cindy!!!
Well, if he'll promise to outsource the House of Representatives, I might think of voting for him... Not that my vote will count on Planet Utah, of course...
yep, respect for your exceptionally stupidness.
What is a "Hash Tag"? shambles? Like as in "your house is in shambles?" - who uses these words?
And the "Twitter" thing. What is that? Like as in "They were all a-twitter?" People don't speak like that.
Oh - it's in England. They make up stupid words all the time.
James: It's true, we don't typically use these words; but, the more you read, the more you will find that there are many words to express the same thing or can help you express yourself.
People refer to the "#" symbol as a hash mark, although it is also used to represent a number or pound.
Shambles refers to something like "your house is in a shambles" which means like a real mess or deteriorating... it is colloquial or "old fashioned."
Twitter typically refers to the sounds to birds are making when they communicate... which why when people use twitter, they "tweet."
Patience and using google or a dictionary can get you far. Reading is the best way to learn more words and how they can be used. The greater your vocabulary, the more you will understand what is happening around you.
Best wishes.
Um hmmm! Education is a wondrous thing, not?
Romney supporters = Mitt's Twitts.
...should 'Slick' Romney win, I think he will kind of be the 'Gerald Ford' of the 21st Century....except instead of tripping over his feet...he will be 'tripping' over his own words...it's hard to speak with a foot in your mouth....amjustsayin....
Romney...speaking truth to has been power! Love him or leave him.
Did anyone see that hilarous incident of the Brits Culture Minister speaking of their sterling preparations for getting the Oympics underway, than ringing the Olympic bell to signal the beginning of the Olympic Games only to have the Bell break off the handle and go flying off.
And knock on wood that nothing happens, but if some untoward incident occurs that the overstreached security at the London Olympics can not quickly respond to, well, how much will this Romney reference to well known problems with security planning and implementation be the topic of discussion by the tabloids that will set their claws out for their own leaders.
I think it was a smart move by Romney to say that security is not as good as it should be. It never is as good as it should be. We do not want anything terrible to happen, but if it does happen Romney can say, "I told you so!" Anyway, if he felt it was not as good as it should be, what is wrong with that? He certainly has a righ to his own feelings. Those who criticise him are as bad as the Southern Baptist that make me feel that I should believe what they believe. He has every right in the world to his own feelings. They should respect his opinion based on what he has observed, just as much as he respects their opinion. When I was in England in WWII, the newspapers headlines stated that the British troops had advanced without mentioning how many mine while ignoring how much Patton had advance which was 100 times more than the Britisth. I am not making this up. They treated the US Army advances unjustly compared to the British. They made it look as if the British were winning the war when it was the US. By the way the Italians women won Godl, Silver and Bronz in fenzing. You will never see that in the front pages of the British press.
Since most people make mistakes, they can identify with someone also making a mistake. If they attack Romney's mistake then psychologically they may feel that their mistakes may also be crirticized. I think that Romeny needs to be seen as more identifying with the average person and his mistakes may be to his advantage.
He seems a little bit too nervous at time. He needs to relax and not care what some members of the media think. He needs to give this impression: My decisions will be made based on the information I have, not as a reaction to what others say. I will make the final decision based on facts, not what someone said. Criticism will be evaluated and I will decide if the criticism is valid or not. If it is valid and I can learn rom it, then so be it, but if it is false it is not my problem. Then the problem belongs to the person who made the criticism.
"end up like Europe, or worse".
wow, keep insulting your allies, Mitt, real smart! Europeans are kicking Americas ass on EVERY level. Greeks and Spainiards STILL have health care, and will NEVER go bankrupt on health care. a daily occurence in America!
Really? The liberal socialists in England don't like Mitt Romney as well as the biased American mainstream media does? I'm SHOCKED!
