Earlier today, Romney campaign spokesperson Andrea Saul appeared on national television to offer an interesting response to a Priorities USA attack ad that features an Indiana man whose wife died of cancer a few years after Romney's Bain Capital shut down his workplace, costing his family its health insurance plan.
"If people had been in Massachusetts, under Governor Romney’s health care plan, they would have had health care," said Saul, appearing to back the idea of bringing Romney's health care plan nationwide. The Massachusetts law, of course, was a model for President Obama's Affordable Care Act, which Romney has vowed to repeal.
That set off an outcry among conservatives. Rush Limbaugh and RedState's Eric Erickson were among numerous right-wingers to slam the Romney camp for praising the Massachusetts law. Erickson called Saul's comment "the moment Mitt Romney lost the election."
And the discussion on Hardball Wednesday offered a picture of just why those conservatives are so worried.
"Today they endorsed, in essence, the central idea of the Affordable Care Act," said Democratic strategist Bob Shrum.
"This thing is gonna come back and kill him in the debates," added New York magazine's John Heilemann.
During the GOP primaries, Romney repudiated his law, saying it was right for his state but not for the country.

who would elect this clown?
So, in order to get affordable health care, I would need to move to Massachussetts? That's their answer? Really?
Watching the ultra conservative GOP members & Republican candidate Romney's campaign continue with their infighting and imploding is amazing. There is no cohesive voice, no distinct explanation of Romney's potential policies, and no reason to vote for Romney (and whoever he finally picks as a running mate/distraction). I am proud to say I voted for Obama before and I will do so again. My preference is for someone with experience, leadership, decisiveness, and persistence to be (re-elected) President. I happen to be female, age 60, and disabled. I am very happy to know the Affordable Care Act is being implemented, and that upgrading women's health care & rights are priorities in Obama's plan. It seems Romney's floundering campaign is courting votes from anyone they can misinform, make empty promises to, or stand beside for a day doing photo opportunities. Someone needs to ask Romney why he has been a prominent figure (/person in a leadership position) in a religion that prevented women and people of color from holding the "Priesthood" for most of its existence. The clearly intelligent, positive, and forward-looking choice is to vote Obama/Biden again in 2012.
Just like being filthy, stinking rich is right for Offshore Willy and his cronies, but not right for the other 99% of us. Let's send this empty headed dilettante back home in November(pick one, he has many).
