Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council (FRC), told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Thursday that he and other conservative and evangelical leaders met with Rep. Todd Akin Wednesday night in Tampa to discuss ways to keep his embattled U.S. Senate campaign afloat.
Perkins described the meeting as an informal gathering of Akin and friends, "to talk with him and encourage him in the stand that he's taking," and made clear that FRC, an influential Christian conservative organization, still supports Akin's bid for the Senate from Missouri.
Akin figures to be highly dependent on backing from FRC and its allies. Since his comments on "legitimate rape" Sunday sparked a firestorm of outrage, he's been all but disowned by the GOP. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan among others have called on him to quit the race, while the RNC, NRSC, and Karl Rove's Super PAC all have said they plan to withdraw their support for his campaign. Akin announced Tuesday he planned to stay in the race, citing support from social conservatives.
In the interview with Mitchell, Perkins aimed to downplay the seriousness of Akin's "legitimate rape" comments.
"It was a 'Biden-ism' that he made," Perkins said. "It was inexcusable, it was inappropriate—he has acknowledged as such, and he's moving on."
"We're not talking about a moral failure here," Perkins added. "We're talking about someone who misspoke."
Republican leaders are scrambling to explain their official stance on abortion ahead of next week's convention. The party this week approved a plank in the platform expressing opposition to abortion and including no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health of the mother. In response, RNC chair Reince Priebus pointed out on MSNBC that the platform "is not the platform of Mitt Romney." Romney has said he supports those exceptions.
But the party still appears worried about being painted as extreme on the issue, in the wake of Akin's comments. In an interview Thursday on CNN, RNC spokesman Sean Spicer argued that the absence of exceptions in the party plank means only that the party hasn't taken a position on the exceptions issue, not that it opposes any exceptions.

A + on the double talk....
How TYPICAL of the GOMERS in the gop-neo-con-Nazi-Regime - They Cause a Problem and then turn and point their fuzzy little fingers at the Dems and Libs ...........T-T-T-T-TYPICAL !!!!!!!!
Akin is a perv and should not be elected to make decision for any womens life, and last time I chedked there are a lot of us, and if we don't have more votes than men, we do control the votes of a lot of men. They don't want to live without us.
evangelical craps...
conservative craps...
just a bunch of maggots feeding on a steamy pile of cow dung!
he did present his moral flaw.....can't hid hate under a lie.
Lets see some facts on that hillbilly. Or are you just running off at the mouth with more lies and BS like all you brain dead teabaggers do.
Lawrence Odonnell has it right-
"batcrap crazy from the STUPID party".
RE:
At least Lawrence admits the truth.
Any Individual (Organization) who (that) gets money or any kind of material equivalent from any Government where the aggregated funds that the Government provides to that Individual (Organization) are sent by the resident taxpayers is also a Socialist.
E.g., any person who satisfies any of 1 - 5 (below) is a Socialist. Any company who satisfies 5 - 6 (below) has Management that consists of Socialists.
General Electric received millions more dollars in federal income tax refunds (at taxpayer expense) than it paid in income taxes. The Koch Brothers, T. Boone Pickens, and the owners other Oil companies, Big and small - are all Socialists, as their Oil Companies receive Subsidies from the Federal Government that are paid for from Government Funds as Tax Expenditures, a significant amount of which comes from the taxpayers.
While it's quite easy for a US Citizen to claim he/she is not a Socialist, it's much more difficult for that person to be telling the truth when he/she says that.
Andrea Mitchell is such a pro. However, this guest is a clown. Calling Todd Akins comments a "Biden-ism" is a disgraceful shot at the VP. These "family value" fools should make every woman in this tremble in fear. What a disgrace!
Put the blame where it belongs ......it is an Akin-ism......you say it you own it.
The problem isn't that he said that nonsense the problem is he believes the nonsense he said was factual, he claims he used the wrong word to describe how he defines rape, not that his belief that women who get raped can't get pregnant so therefore any woman who was raped that did get pregnant wasn't raped, it was consensual because the anti pregnant rape gene didn't kick on. Or as Ed calls it psycho babble.
Sorry left out the word WRONG before posting, or as Ed calls it psycho babble. GOP stupidity boggles the mind.
what biden said was in refference to wall street and the banks nothing like these scum bags said. religious bigots are the worst at spreading hate and bigotry. but remember that's how all those men where back in the days of MOSES.
Andrea Mitchell is a pro. Her guest is a clown. His assertion that Todd Akins comments were a "Biden-ism" is disgraceful insult to the Vice President and a rather pathetic way of deflecting heat from Akins. Akins comments were from the heart and Perkins defense of Akin lumps him into the same camp of right-wing misogynist's. If you're a woman you should be very, very afraid of these bible pounding zealots.
ANDREA MITCHELL-
love love love her.
must see T.V. for me every day!
RE: @Mr. Whiggins, (Comment #3)
Agreed. What Todd Akins first said cannot truthfully be compared to a Bidenism in any way shape or form. While VP Biden has the occasional inartful moment, where a less-charged word would have been preferable, he's still telling the truth, albeit in a more painful way than would have been preferred. (His "they'll put you back in chains" statement was not a Bidenism though, it was in context of Romney/Ryan wanting to unchain Wall Street and let them make their own rules again.)
What Akin did wasn't a matter of using the wrong word, using "legitimate" instead of "forced" as a modifier of "rape" - referring to the initially intended phraseology for HB3 that Ryan and Akin were co-sponsors for. Even worse, was the reference to a junk-scientific "explanation," originated by Dr. Wellke, for how female victims of vaginal rape can somehow dissuade any of the rapist's sperm from reaching the egg.
[Last year, I remember seeing on NGC or Discovery Channel a TV program where some kind of imaging device was used to determine the effects of a female orgasm, as shown, if the female orgasm occurred shortly after the male orgasm, the sperm would get "vacuumed" towards the fallopian tubes, where the egg(s) reside(s), to substantially improve the odds of impregnation from that particular act of coitus.]
Rape is Rape is an act of Violence. It's a very impersonal but violent way for the perpetrator to take control of the victim, and show by actions rather than word that the rapist is in control.
While I can see how usage of "a deadly rape" or "a very violent rape" might be descriptively useful, any proposed modification of "rape" to suggest that when the victim said "no" she really meant "yes" is abhorrent, more so, if the purpose is to tell the woman impregnated as a result of being raped that she can't have an abortion. If she wishes to work with a priest, a therapist, her husband, and/or one or both of her parents, to help her decide whether to abort, keep, or adopt out, that's certainly ok. But for any government to deny her the ability of making the choice for herself - to me, that is abusing the law to dictate what the woman will do, regardless of her preference.
I think what biden was a one word problem not a total statement on something he believe in. You can say what you want but there was a differents.
It turn out what Biden said was true even though he corrected it an explain the meaning.
People can use their own judgement.
Not a moral failure? It depends whose definition you are using! I think it is a moral failure to claim that someone who has been raped would have to be re-traumatized by going through with the pregnancy. As a survivor of sexual assault, I have found this whole notion that the Republicans want this to be law to be traumatizing...I am not being dramatic. this is so not ok. Tony Perkins has just committed a moral failure by not recognizing the pain and suffering survivors are going through because of his stance!
Please.....Tell your "Friends & Family" ***** VOTE "TODAY'S" Republican Party INTO EXTINCTION!!!!!******
Our Country would OBVIOUSLY Be SO MUCH BETTER....WITHOUT THEM !!!!!!
garbage, obtuse, pitiful party shot themselves in the head when they selected rotten and retarded as THEIR candidates!!!
RIP g... o... p... maggots!
I'm shocked, shocked I tell you, that a Bible thumping, woman-hating pig would stick up for another Bible thumping, woman-hating pig! What is this world coming to? :)
I am amazed you did not mention the article about MSNBC getting a half Million for your advertising of green energy. That seems to qualify as "Stupid".
I know it is hard for you but focus the topic is Akins trying to walk back his stupidity, not how much MSNBC gets paid for running ads on its programs. By your thinking MSNBC shouldn't be paid to run GOP ads either because after all that is why the GOP has Fox news, oh wait Fox also runs ads for things they are for or against too. Gee imagine that a corporation taking money to run ads of all kinds what is the world coming to.
I believe it's called "the FREE market". I thought you righties were all about the "free market. Guess you have been lying about that as well as everything else.
Oh no Larry apparently networks and people are not allowed to make money advertising anything the GOP doesn't like. The right seems to only defend "commerce" when it involves screwing someone else.
Strip clubs in Tampa look forward to tremendous increase in business.
Fox news GAVE hundreds of thousands to the republican governor's association. Guess you should be super outraged by that.
'Strip Clubs in Tampa look forward to tremendous increase in business'. Exactly CC..LOL...I'll bet they put a few working girls through college by the time the 'Gathering of the nuts' is over. If a Hurricane doesn't blow them all away first.
and i want to see these actions plastered all over the news. ha ha can't wait to see those snippets.
And the working girls..and boys no doubt(unlike them I don't judge them for such desires)...will need every dime if they(GOP) get their way on those loan rates for students.
Speaking of that hurricane did you know that Obama created it? Apparently according to Limbaugh hurricane isaac is just Obama propaganda. I guess when you're a secret muslim atheist socialist you have the power to control the weather........this is almost as good as when he was talking about the new batman movie. LMFAO. Where do they dig these people up????
Now they want to compare a misinterpreted metaphor to a twisted, core belief system. It ain't happenin' and it's not going to happen.

Right wing radicals of the same feather tend to flock together.
whomitmay- I am not disagreeing with you here but merely pointing out that Both Fox and MSNBC really don't have a choice about running ads for the opposite people that they support, because it is federal law that they have to accept that advertising.
Then why bother posting a whine that everybody knows law forces them to run an ad unless there is public out rage over the ad.
Of all people to compare Akin to! Joe Biden loves women and has worked hard to protect us from violence. Biden makes mistakes but would never say something as stupid and hateful as Akin did....
romney - ryan share akins views, always have, now they lie, lie, lie
the republicans remind me of stampeding buffaloes all headed in the same direction towards the high cliff because they all stay together whether its a extreme lie or mutual self destruction.
My sister was brutally raped by 2 men. Sorry, I dont consider this little worm`s remarks on rape to be a "Biden- ism" I hope the really smart people in the USA deliver a CRUSHING DEFEAT to Romneyhood & Friar Paul in November!!
White Floridian
There is your answer to all of this Akinism...evangelical, white, dirty, old, MEN! Men... making decision on what a WOMEN should do and NOT do with HER BODY....according to their understanding. Never mind if the WOMEN is molested, raped and God forbid get pregnant by a family member...and be FORCED to carry that demon to full term, and give birth to it...because again..a evangelical, white, dirty, old MEN said so.
Bunch of hypocrites! These low-life's are the worse....God forbid if it is only a"FORCIBLE RAPE"
