In a fiery and passionate speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, Rep. John Lewis, an American civil rights hero who was beaten while fighting segregation, ripped the Republican voter suppression efforts that disproportionately affect minorities.
"Today, it is unbelievable that there are Republican officials trying to stop some people from voting," he said referring to GOP officials across the country who are pushing laws that would require all voters to produce a specific current government-issue photo ID before casting a ballot.
"I've seen this before, I've lived this before. Too many people struggling, suffering and dying to make it possible for every American to exercise their right to vote," the Georgia Republican said to a cheering audience.
"We have come too far together to ever turn back. So Democrats, we must not be silent. We must stand up, speak up and speak out. We must march to the polls like never, ever, before," he declared.
After his speech, Lewis told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell that Republicans were "trying to take us back to another period." He added it would be an "affront" to all those who suffered and even died during the Civil Rights era if such voter suppression laws are enforced.
When Mitchell asked if there was a connection that the disenfranchisement efforts are coinciding as the first African-American president seeks another term, Lewis responded, "It is a systematic, deliberate effort on the part of some forces in our country to win this election, or steal this election, before it takes place. I'm convinced of that. There's no such thing as widespread voter fraud in any part of our country."
WATCH LEWIS'S PASSIONATE SPEECH ABOVE

Congressman John Lewis was right on.
Love John Lewis. Someone with a heart!
John Lewis is a Rascist and should be ashamed the way he tarnishes his outstanding history in the Civil Rights struggle and stoops the same level as those southern Democrats who turned the hoses on him.
Do not forget the Republican Party was created as a result of the anti slavery sentiment in the late 1850's and Abraham Lincoln who led this Great Country through a Civil War that as a result led to the freedom of John Lewis's ancestors from the slavery he is now claiming republicans are trying to put him back into.
Shame, Shame, Shame
unreal,
the repub party was created as a result of the anti-slavery sentiment...
you are saying that the republican party is the same today as it was in 1850. i have heard many republicans do this, overlooking the flip that occured when President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. he knew when he signed Civil Rights into law, that he would lose the southern democrats, and he did.
he lost them, and they switched to the Republican party, not wanting to associate themselves with the man, with the party who would give civil rights to blacks.
it seems apparent to me that John Lewis, an american civil rights hero who fought for the RIGHT TO VOTE would know voter suppression when he see's it.
shame shame shame on YOU for calling John Lewis a racist. i don't get how you all don't see how the voting REGULATIONS that repubs have put in place would make those who FOUGHT FOR CIVIL RIGHTS, and those who ARE LOSING THE RIGHT TO VOTE, question whether their RIGHTS are being taken away.
suzette - factually unreal is correct. If you look at the political map of 1859, the North was Republican and the South was Democrat. The Republicans were the progressive and the Democrats the conservatives. Today they are reversed. Using the same political map, the North is primarily Democrat and the South is primarily Republican. That's the way it is now.
When LBJ signed the law he said, behind closed doors. that it woud "have those n*****s voting democrat for the next 200 years. Most blacks have ID but have outstanding warrents and are afraid to show it.
Here is a quote from the Brennan Center for Justice website that discusses Voter ID laws. Up to 11% of the population faces being denied the right to vote by these restrictive laws. These GOP initiatives are a violation of the 1965 Voter's Rights Act and the 24th Amendment to the Constitution that prohibits poll taxes or other taxes required for voting. Here is this quote below with the website referenced below:
"Studies show that as many as 11 percent of eligible voters do not have government-issued photo ID. That percentage is even higher for seniors, people of color, people with disabilities, low-income voters, and students. Many citizens find it hard to get government photo IDs, because the underlying documentation like birth certificates (the ID one needs to get ID) is often difficult or expensive to come by. At the same time, voter ID policies are far more costly to implement than many assume."

that actually is a good question...why isnt the MSM reporting this...?
just saying....
They never report on anything that might put blacks in a negative light. Black flash mobs are always referred to as out of control youths, in black on white crime the race is never reported(you have to research it, if no race is identified its black). Even the tragedy known as the Knoxville horror never received a word in MSM. Oh but Trayvon Martin, they ran with that until the truth started being apparent.
Frankly friends, if you let this (something worse than crap), go on, you are not my kind of American. Get the hell out and vote. And get the folk registered, even if the Republicans lock us up for "voter fraud" (their term for a fair vote}
How about, the the hell out and get an ID?
The Big Romney Lie That Eclipses All Of Ryan's Lies.
By Andrew Spagnoli
After hearing so many blatant mischaracterizations, misrepresentations, and
outright misstatements of fact (or lies as we usually call them) it was easy to
miss the biggest whopper of the Republican National Convention coming from
Romney's mouth last night. The biggest lie among all the big ones
flowing out of Tampa was Romney's outrageous and ridiculous assertion that after
the election of Barack Obama, the Republicans united behind the new president
for the good of the country. Really, Mitt? Really? I know that many of the
fanciful stories that the RNC spun this week can be, and have been, shown to
untrue, but none is so fundamental to the Republican campaign narrative as the
phony notion that "we gave Obama a chance, and he failed."
We heard Paul Ryan's outrageous attempt to paint Obama as a threat to health
care coverage for daring to reduce costs in Medicare as a way to get more
coverage for our money, not less benefits. This is in contrast to Ryan's
own plan that makes the same cuts to medicare costs, but uses the savings for
tax cuts for top earners. We heard Ryan blame the U.S. credit rating downgrade
on Obama, despite the fact the rating downgrade specifically cited extremist
obstructionism by Paul Ryan and the Congressional Republicans as the factor that
damaged our credit. We heard Ryan cast himself as defender of the poor, despite
his budget plan which targets the poor for 2/3 of the total cuts he proposes
while lavishing huge giveaways on the wealthiest Americans who need it least.
We heard Ryan chastise Obama for not taking action on the recommendations of the
bipartisan debt commission that Obama himself established, when in point of
fact, Ryan and the entire House Republican group on the panel had already voted
to block any such action. And, of course, we heard Ryan blame a GM plant
closure on Obama. In reality, the plant was all but completely closed before
Obama was President, and finished closing shortly after his election. Mitt
Romney, at the time that Obama was risking his political life to save the U.S.
auto industry from total collapse, suggested that we should just let GM go under
altogether. That could be the dictionary definition of hypocrisy.
In Romney's speech, buried amidst all the sentimental pandering, were a few
more whoppers. Romney chides Obama for not having a jobs plan, when he knows
full well that the Republicans in Congress killed the plan that Obama had: the
American Jobs Act. The Romney plan for "12 million new jobs" basically takes
credit for the 12 million new jobs that economists already predict will be
created during that time frame... without any action from Romney, or additional
action by a second Obama administration. Way to set the bar high, Mitt. Romney
also blamed Obama for raising taxes on small businesses, when in fact 97% of
these businesses saw a tax reduction under the Obama administration. Likewise,
Romney painted Obama as starving America of energy and hurting the energy
industry and manufacturing in the process. The truth is that oil, coal, and
natural gas have all increased production under Obama, and alternative
energy has started to blossom as well. Add the snide, and untrue, nonsense
about Obama apologizing for America and the veiled dig at Obama being somehow
less American than Romney, and you are left with nothing more than bits of
rhetorical flotsam floating in a sea of lies.
With all of the untruth that is laid out above, and with many more examples
of repeated lies by the Republicans this election cycle that are viewable all
over the web, print, and TV media, it would seem that there could not be
anything less true that comes out of the mouths of the right wingers. It would
seem that way until one looks at the overarching narrative that Romney tried to
depict for the American voter last night, and throughout his campaign. Romney
would have us believe that the Republicans gave Obama a chance, that we tried
the Democratic Party plan, that American businesses all worked to make recovery
happen faster and more fully. That simply never happened. We watched the
Republican obstructionism. We saw the speeches where they howled that making
Obama fail (and America along with him) was priority 1,2, and 3... not jobs. We
saw the signs outside businesses saying things like "I will not hire anyone
until Obama is finished". We see today that many American corporations have
record cash reserves, high profits, and massively bloated top tier compensation
and bonuses... what we don't see is the hiring of Americans by those that could
hire. Nasty sign outside, or not, there has clearly been a coordinated effort
to make things worse by many of those in positions to help Obama and help
America make things better. The top 1% doesn't need more tax cuts so they can
hire you or your neighbor; they have plenty to hire with now. The top 1%
does need a lesson or two in statesmanship, as do Mitt Romney and Paul
Ryan. Lessons in honesty might also help.
These two claim to be so damn religious, but lie like they do not believe in any God at all.
Such lovely garbage spewed by individuals who can not come up with a clear and thoughtful arguement on their own.
Dawn, I am so glad you have true insight into these mens hearts and souls, what do you see when you look at obama and biden, probably nothing but hate and despair in the fact that they will be fired in 60 days.
love love love John Lewis, an American Civil Rights Hero!
I don`t believe in this movie that is showing now.. Obama 2016. look who behind it based on lies... And funny it is showing now...
Just like Michael Moore's movie during the last election. Did that bother you, Deb?
Moores was the truth. This one is bases on puire lies.
Exactly, some idiots delusional conspiracy theories. The biggest problem is that there are a lot of dumb people out there that will believe this movie!
I want to protect the vote against dead people, illegals and others not legally eligible to vote. I am all for voter ID. Voting is a right, but is the most sacred item to our liberty protected by the constitution. It MUST be protected from those that would vote illegally. If Iraqis risk their lives to vote for the first time, surely we can get a voter ID to vote in this country. Heck! If we don't care if the people who enter the voting booth are legal voters, lets just open it to anyone including tourists and illegal immigrants. Whoever would like to vote, come on down, as long as you vote for democrats. Voter ID is the best idea I have heard. I am amazed at the democratic party that thought that Black panthers standing outside the polling places with nightsticks was ok, but is against voter ID. Those men did not even get a slap on the hand. Talk about intimidation. Did Obama or Holder care about that? Not hardly.
And your sources for your stupid claims would be??? You must mean that 0.000002%. Damn, that sure won an election. Go back to Fox Lies. The have a rightie blog. It's for idiots like you.
Jes3 that's why in court the (R)'s did not put one claim of voter fraud, and in fact stated that they had no evidence of any fraud at all. That along with the video of that idiot saying, "Voter ID law, which will allow Mitt Romney to win the election...Done" Yet the (R) judge still let it stand. You really want to vote for a party of liars?
Larry and Dawn...
That is why the SCOTUS upheld the only case that it has heard requiring the use of voter ID in Indiana. When these other cases wind their way through the system, the ultimate decision will be made by the SCOTUS and precedent has already been set.
just saying...
Been going on in Chicago for decades, Obama cut his teeth on it.
The democrats claim they are for voter's rights, yet last night with one very simple action, they proved to the world that they only care about voter's rights, as long as the vote goes their way. Last night the democrat leadership disenfranchised their own voters!
After three failed attempts to pass the amendment to put God , and Jerusalem back on the platform, Villaraigosa just pushed it through. It was very obvious that they didn't have a 2/3s majority to pass it, in fact it sounded like the majority was against it.
This just shows that the leaders, in the democrat party, don't think that their supporters will make the "right decisions" (their decisions). This should be a wake up call for all democrats! This one little act says a lot about the leaders of the party, and and what they think about their followers.
So, since the democrats always claim to stand up for the disenfranchised, why aren't they now?
Voter suppression, right there for the whole world to see.
Did Mitt Romney Commit Voter Fraud In Massachusetts in 2010?
Michael Kelley|April 20, 2012|
This question has been asked before, but it takes on new significance now that Romney has all but clinched the Republican presidential nomination and Stratfor emails accuse Barack Obama's 2008 campaign of stuffing ballot boxes.
The issue arises from the ballot Romney cast for Republican Scott Brown in January 2010 in the special election to replace the late Sen. Ted Kennedy.
The former Massachusetts governor did not own property in the state in 2010 and registered to vote from an address in the unfinished basement of an 8,000 square-foot Belmont mansion owned by his son Tagg.
Last June GOP political consultant Fred Karger filed a complaint with Massachusetts state election officials alleging that Romney voted in several elections without residing in the state.
Karger spoke with members of the Mormon Temple and Meetinghouse in Belmont — where the Romney's attended weekly church services when they lived there — and one told Karger that she "hadn’t seen the Romneys since 2008."
The Romneys' former realtor told Krugar that they moved to California and allegedly Ann Romney told him the same when he saw her at a conference in Las Vegas where Romney was speaking.
The Romneys bought a $12.5 million home in La Jolla, Calif., in May 2008 and sold their home in Belmont in April 2009 (for $3.5 million). In May 2009 the Romneys began describing their $10 million estate in New Hampshire as their primary residence (presumably to prepare for the 2012 election).
President Obama has disclosed his 2012 state tax return (from Illinois) whereas Romney has not (from ?).
From Mother Jones:
Residency issues have plagued Mitt Romney in the past. When he campaigned for governor of Massachusetts in 2002, he ran into trouble because he had switched his residency to Utah three years earlier when he moved to Park City to take over the struggling Salt Lake Olympic operation. The move technically made him ineligible to run for office in Massachusetts, which requires seven years of continuous state residency before a candidate is eligible to run. After a lot of legal wrangling and paying back taxes, he was finally allowed on the ballot.
According to Massachusetts law, a residence for voter registration purposes as “where a person dwells and which is the center of his domestic, social, and civil life” and anyone found guilty of committing voter fraud faces up to five years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
http://articles.businessinsider.com/2012-04-20/politics/31371937_1_ann-romney-massachusetts-governor-residency
Good question! I don't think there is definitive proof either way. Sure, we can list different allegations, against Romney, made by people who really don't care for him. We could also list various allegations, against Obama, made by people who really don't care for him.
My statement is not an allegation, it is fact. Last night the democrat leadership did suppress voters! The whole world saw it!
So, back to my question. Since the democrats always claim to stand up for the disenfranchised, why aren't they now?
Not even close to the same thing. I don't care either way about this particular thing. Apparently others do, but my point is, it's not deciding who will run the country or have a seat in congress, etc. So it's not the same. The (R) however did some crazy crap just like that in...I forget what state or what it was about now, but it was important, and it wasn't one party it was both parties and the (R)'s just did exactly what your talking about. which that is bullsh**.
I wonder how many of those voters had to show an ID before they went in to vote?
just saying...
I understand how the left enjoys jumping on Romney for his change in positions on some topics...much like Obama has done (gay marriage)...but to watch an ENTIRE party do a flip flop on national television was hilarious. First you vote to have God and Jerusalem out of the platform and then once you see the political ramifications for your action, you vote again to have them included...what a bunch of hypocrites.
And to make it worse...your leaders ramrod it through even though it didnt have the votes to pass. If that is an example of how the Democrats want to lead our country, we are in for a dark future...
Rep. Joe Lewis, how sad it is that here in the 21st. century we are re-engaging battles of voter suppression, segregation and just plain hatred, that has been fought back in the sixties!
Never give in!

the republican party has unleashed their racist political cronies and other racists bent on destroying all the civil rights laws by oppressing, suppressing, denying, restricting, creating similar poll taxes/costs, changing rules at voting sites by returning to the Jim Crow years. Many citizens shed their blood or died protesting such discriminatory laws. The republicans stand for such shameful and purely hateful agenda. Are we Americans so filled with hate that they'll go so far as to push for such thinking??
Yes ed, they do not care, they only care about winning. Getting power.
e -- Yes THEY Are - They Have Killed-Slaughtered Our Fore-Fathers Just For Voting for UNIONS that Wanting A Fair Chance And Wanting A SAFE Place To Work - with Descent Pay Scales And Health Insurance - and Back Then- AS TODAY - THEY Want To Slaughter The American Workers - Only for Their Own Selfish GREED - The Disrespect That THEY Show Toward the American Workers Is Anti-American !!!! Disgusting and Ridiculous .............
I completely agree, MD, I just don't understand, how much friggin money do they need for crying out loud. It's utterly ridiculous. If they pay people more money then more people will be paying more taxes which will get us out of debt that much faster.

They are so despicable. It's like a clip of a documentary that I saw. This woman went around interviewing poor (R), people. One guy had no front teeth, and said "I don't want no government..." Footprints in the Sand
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the
Lord.
Many scenes from my
life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I
noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes
there were two sets of footprints,
other
times there were one set of footprints.
This
bothered me because I noticed
that
during the low periods of my life,
when
I was suffering from
anguish,
sorrow or defeat,
I could see
only one set of footprints.
So I said to the
Lord,
"You promised me
Lord,
that if I followed
you,
you would walk with
me always.
But I have
noticed that during
the
most trying periods of my life
there
have only been one
set
of footprints in the sand.
Why,
when I needed you most,
you
have not been there for me?"
The
Lord replied,
"The
times when you have
seen only one
set of footprints,
is when I carried
you."

Well the damage has been done and we have won. Now its up to you and me.
Wow! Ask a question about why the democrats aren't standing up for voters that were disenfranchised at the dnc, and all is; The republicans did the same thing "...I forget what state or what it was about now" etc.... and then a bunch of other smoke!
If you're against voter suppression, your against it.
From the responses above, I get the feeling democrats are okay with voter suppression, as long as it doesn't hurt them.
Let me state this a different way!
If the republicans did the same thing, and there was proof (not just allegations) like the proof here, they should be called on the carpet for it. Go ahead, and beat the republicans up on it. If I had seen it happen, I would be doing the same thing! Everyone should be against suppressing any legal voting.
So, with that said! Stop with the comments about republicans doing the same thing. Stop with the "we won, we won, Obama is great!" comments. This question isn't about who would make a better president. Its not about the tea party, or the occupiers. It's about standing up for disenfranchised voters at the DNC.
Its a very simple question, about the suppression that went on at the DNC.
Since the democrats always claim to stand up for the disenfranchised, why aren't they now?
Democrats have lost their right to ever make any claims about voter suppression following the debacle that was the DNC. I personally dont care at all whether they made a decision to include the word God in their platform or not, not do I care whether they recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. It is their party and they are welcome to make any stand that they want. HOWEVER, their blatant disregard for the rights of the voters at the convention who did not want it included during the amendment process is shameful. This was something that was predetermined to have passed by the powers to be regardless of what the voters decided. It was so blatantly obvious that it did not meet the 2/3 majority requirement that the mayor of LA had to call for the vote 3 times and at the end just decided that he could not continue with the farce any more and declared it passed.
Thank you Democrats for showing your true colors. Any of your lemmings who continue to follow you off the cliff deserve what they get...unfortunately, the rest of us will have to suffer along with you...
just saying..
Only people who have already admitted they have nothing to offer try to rig the vote to win anyway.
