The United States added 96,000 jobs last month, less than what many analysts expected, but the unemployment rate ticked down to 8.1%, according to a Labor Department report released Friday. Unemployment stood at 8.3% in July when the economy added 141,000 jobs.
U.S. job growth is averaging 139,000 each month this year, compared with 153,000 in 2011.
Many in the political sphere had questioned the impact the announcement the monthly jobs report would have on the presidential race with President Obama closing out the two weeks of conventions with his acceptance speech coming the night before.
"I think it's a wash," John Heilemann, national affairs editor at New York Magazine, said on Morning Joe in describing the report's mixed results, less than a 100,000 jobs but a lower unemployment rate.
Mark Halperin, senior political analyst for Time magazine, disagreed, saying "going from 8.3% to 8.1%" unemployment will have a positive impact on the president's campaign because of the downward trend while making it more difficult for Mitt Romney.
The polish of the Democratic National Convention and caliber of speeches, though, convinced much of Morning Joe panel, which was broadcasting live from Charlotte, N.C., where the Democratic National Convention was held, that Obama's campaign would "move the needle," on polling several points, as put by host Joe Scarborough.

Does anybody at MSNBC have a clue that the ONLY reason why the rate went down was because almost 400,000 people quit looking and are no longer counted?
This is a horrible disaster for the unemployed.
Obama FAILED big time on everything for the People, but then again what does he really know anyway?
"Poor" Obama my butt,
his grandmother OWNED a Bank!
No idiot. His grandmother was a vice-president of a local bank. You're typing on a computer right? Use your "Google" search engine before you just start spouting off your typical right wing lies. Save those for Joe and his crew.
The Republican Tea Party in the House and Republican Senate, have not lifted a finger to help people get back to work, they have stood by and watched the American Citizens "SUFFER" while they lay in wait for OBAMA to fail..These"REPUBLICAN" reminds me of Christmas time, you go shopping for all kinds of goodies and there on the corner, at the side of the street, is a "ROBBER" to steal what you have worked hard to build, This REPUBLICAN CONGRESS, they have been the problem..they should be brought up on charges of TREASON...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-A09a_gHJc
This is a Republican Minority Leader's GOAL:
Typical right wingie talk.... What failed the American citizens is the GOPnuts and tea heads. Spare us the BS!
Not only have they 'not lifted a finger to help', they have actively obstructed! How can Freedoms.patriot even begin to defend these people? Sir, I am sure you have a conscience. What can be driving you to take this kind of position?
Spin, spin, and spin. It is not everybody that has stop looking for a job, give me a break. The fact is there were 96K job gains and not a lost; and the employement rate is down because some people did find jobs.
You''re the type of bigot that will "never" use the full potential that you're entitled to as a child of God, because you don't know God. Do you think that the people who quit looking for work are sitting around being homeless and hungry? or might they be looking for "YOU" to lend a hand or provide a meal. President Obama is "EXACTLY" what you wish you could be and that's why you are hating on him. What's fortunate for you is that in spite of your mental madness, President Obama is still looking out for your best interest. And you may even believe you're right about his mother... goody for you!
People like you behave as if the President is a king. I'm always amazed at how you don't hold Congress responsible for any government failings. And just so you know, I said the same thing when Bush was President.
I want someone to tell Governor Granholm and make her day. Beauty, brains, and a whole lotta heart. Gotta love her.
Yes, she was fantastic!
MSNBC omission of all the facts is just as bad as lying
Tell your Obama KooL Aid drinkers all the facts
tell them how 368,000 has left the work forse that is over 1/3 million workers who have just given up we have the lowest work participation in over 30 years, we have the lowest manufacture jobs created in 2.5 years at 15,000 and real unemployment is over 14%
And with all these bad numbers you are still trying to spin on Obamas behalf its making you look desperately foolish
Hope has turned to hopeless
Yeah. Tell them that Republican Governors have fired over 650,000 American government employees over the last two years, and we now have the same rate of government employment that we had in 1968.
Tell them that the Republicans in Congress have voted agains 19 different jobs bills now.
http://www.policymic.com/articles/11510/senate-republicans-block-another-jobs-bill-face-backlash-from-american-public/200556
Tell them that despite the fact that Joe constantly claims the Dems controlled Congress for the first two years in reality because of Kennedys death, and the fact that Republicans kept Al Frankens victory tied up in court for so long, the Dems actually only controlled the Congress for less than 4 months.
http://www.thepragmaticpundit.com/2011/12/obama-did-not-control-congress-for-two.html
Someone is spinning here but it ain't the Dems.
If the public sector unions wouldn't have fleeced the state and local tax payer for so much for so long those states would have been able to keep those government employees on the pay roll. government workers get paid 30% on average more then the private sector and they can retire earlier with lavish retirement plans states and local government cant afford it anymore
wake up look around cities are going bankrupt all around America because of the public sector unions
Playing class warfare aren't you? Jealous of peoples success aren't you? Public workers take smaller salaries to pay into their pensions. You can take $30 in salary or $20 in salary and put $10 into your pension. Either way that's how the average of the public workers salary is counted.
In the private sector the corporations have cut wages, healthcare and pensions if they provide healthcare and pensions at all. So you're playing class warfare and jealous of the public sector workers success. Stop it. Most people in the public sector are veterans and women.
Part of the reason cities are going bankrupt is because they lowered taxes on the rich and the corporations many of whom are paying zero in taxes. Why should we pay 18% -35% in taxes while they pay 0%? They are the most profitable they have ever been in the history of this country. America is about equality. Corporate America is about inequality.
Further, the failure of the union pensions has been blamed on union mismanagement but we have just learned yet again it was the banks and the LIBOR scandal where they stole hundreds of trillions worldwide from pensions and other funds by manipulation of interest rates. So again stop playing this blame game and class warfare and attacking the American worker when it is the super rich who keep walking away with trillions of dollars while we the people keep ending up on the streets without or our mortgages and without our bank accounts.
You keep falling for the lies. The facts you quote just don't add up. Don't be a gullible fool. Stop watching the millionaire "journalists" on Fox because my friend they are not like you or me. They just want their tax rate adjusted to 1% like Mitt while you and I pay 33%.
This is why the American people need to re-elect President Obama and vote democratic for our Senators and House of Representives.
Why, so they can continue to spend, drive this economy into a greek like depression so businesses will REALLY stop hiring. Look at the cross tabs in the jobs numbers. manufacturing actually LOST jobs. It take about 175,000 monthly average to drop the unemployment rate .1% a month. How the heck does it go down .2 with only 91,000 jobs created, its because people JUST STOPPED LOOKING. Ive notice that most people who vote democrat, really dont pay attention.
Business will always sit back and not hire, not knowing what the future holds....and right now obamacare and tax policy is causing many of them to NOT HIRE.
Ha Ha Ha let's do compare us to Greece, Spain, the U.K. and the dozens of European countries that DID try the Republican/Ryan recovery plan. Whoops. We have gone into a full throttled recovery creating jobs non-stop for thirty months straight with only 8.1% unemployment. Several countries in Europe have unemployment as high as 25%.
We are the only country that has had a recovery no thanks to the Republican Congress that has rejected the Presidents and the Democrats economic/jobs plans now 19 times (soon to be 20 times on monday). Yet somehow you and the Republicans keep blaming the President for your failure to pass that plan. Gee I wonder why the corporations and Wall Street are so insecure and wont hire people?
When Bush was in office the Democrats always supported Bush even though they disagreed with his policies because they realized the American people voted for him and they didn't want to risk the business community losing faith in our government.
The Republicans don't care about that. That is even more troubling in the biggest recession since the Great Depression. A depression caused incidentally by a businessman (Herbert Hoover), using the same policies as businessman Bush and the same polices that businessman Romney wants to try again.
Einstein said, "Insanity can be defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Therefore Republicans are insane for both electing businessmen to run the government and for trying to use the same failed policies over and over again to rescue our economy especially when they have caused our two more serious economic disasters.
The Democratic convention was off the chain!!! Best I've ever see!!! The Repugnuts and teaheads should be embarrassed because their convention was nothing more than a pandering, Obama bash-o-rama! While the right wingnuts want to say that the jobs numbers are bad, and make other excuses about how Obama "failed" on economy, let's not forget that the Repugnuts/Teaheads blocked the jobs bill that would have created way more jobs. We didn't forget about that! So the next time a bridge that is in dire need of repair collapses and hundreds of Americans are injured or killed, Repugnuts... look at yourselves. No one to blame but yourselves.
you sound like youre talking bout another "stimulus". Interesting that OBama never mentions it himself any more. Wasnt it obama who said "shovel ready wasnt as shovel ready as we expected". Even HE knows it was a failure.
Bottom line is GOVERNMENT cannot sustain jobs!!!!
That's funny Vince because of the 46 worlds leading economic research firms 42 of them said the stimulus plan was, in fact, a resounding success, ( and many of them are conservative firms that are not fans of Obama). That is why the U.S. is the only country in the world that is now experiencing a recovery in its economy and in fact producing new jobs. This is compared to the European countries that opted to go with the Ryan/Republican type austerity plan and are now going through a double dip recession and experiencing unemployment as high as 25%.
My suggestion to you is to stop watching Fox, and CNN and to stop listening to Rash Limpballs because you sound like a fool and when you speak people realize just how undereducated you really are.
As far as the government sustaining jobs it is your party the Republican Governors who have fired over 650,000 government workers over the last two years, during a recession, in an effort to destroy the Presidents reputation without being concerned for our economy or for our fellow Americans jobs. The really horrible thing here is that most of the jobs were held by veterans and women.
I, for one, am not so much loyal to a single party as I am loyal to my fellow countrymen and to American workers and our success. Republicans have proven over and over they are only concerned with their personal tax breaks (those of the 1%) and not with the economy or with jobs for the American people.
Yes, the DNC was off the chain. It was fantastic. The Republicans keep saying the President does not have a record. How wrong they were, as we can see the president have a very good record even with their destruction.
Interesting that OBama never mentioned his record!
Vince: What's interesting to me is that goofballs like you who never actually listen to the speech actually believe that people like us that did listen to the speech will believe the lies that you believe. Do you take us for idiots?
You see we don't watch Fox or listen to Limbaugh. We actually know the truth. We are not gullible fools like you. If you even care to know or learn the truth I am attaching a transcript of the Presidents speech below:
abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS/transcript-president-obam...
Now, when you make the claim in the future you can make it knowing you are either a boldfaced liar, a complete idiot or you can stop making the claim all together and start telling the truth it is up to you. Decide to be a real American and participate in real honest politics or continue to be a partisan right wing liar. It is totally up to you.
Yes, the jobs report does show a gain in jobs. The jobs report is a testimony that shows we are moving in the right direction because we are not loosing jobs and the unemployment rate is going down. This is very positive for the president. Americans must be patient because it takes time to re-build an economy that was near destruction from the Bush Administration.
The DNC was fantastic and uplifting which was 1000 times better than the RNC. The DNC speakers and organization of the event was wonderful. The speakers had nothing but good things to say about President Obama that tied with actual facts. It was awesome.
Under youre logic, we have 40 million without health insurance. If 20 million die, well we have decreased the uninsured by 50%. When 400,000 stop looking for work ... THATS NOT GOOD!
The Governor of Maryland said on Morning Joe that Democratic governors have created more jobs than their Republican counterparts in July. Does it mean it's the only month that they outdid the Republicans in job creation? There are some interesting reports on the web contradicting his argument.
MArtin o'malley state is horrible with job creation. Hr actually compares his state with other in different regions to look better. He avoide the surrounding states with the same economy.
He also proposed a 20 cent per gallon gas tax.
When the average unemployment rate is 8.1% and Marylands unemployment rate is 6.7% he has nothing to complain about. I think you should probably stick with your coloring books Vince. Politics just isn't your in your wheelhouse.
What's more amazing about these statistics, regardless of their true economic impact, is that on the day this President, who is being outwardly treated like we are in the 1950's in this country, accepts the "second" nomination to be President, the stock market reaches its highest level since 2007. This level, in hindsight, was the beginning of the economic crash that still had a long way to fall UNTIL Barack Obama stepped in and stifled the freefall. The greater scandals and money-grubbing, stealing, lying, greedy bastard schemes against the non-rich in this country was perpetrated by mo-fos who are not being prosecuted by that laws of this land but rest assured, while you can, that they will be questioned and pay atonement for their scheming. In 2008 we voted to "change the guard", in 2012 we must vote to "guard the change". Regardless of what tomorrow might bring, no person can claim that President Obama has not been a leader for the people of this nation and an example for other nations on how to care for its people... in spite of them.
Mitt promises to add 12 million jobs if he is elected. I think he will if the GOP starts to deporting the 12 million Hispanic who are here illegally. This would of course be a disgrace to our national. Somehow the corporation named Mitt Romney won't care.
Like Joe said, he'll create 12 million jobs alright...Overseas.
That is great, considering where this country would be if jobs wasn't saved, even though things are still a bit slow, it is coming along, even though it has been a lot evil stack against progress, it would take a very evil unrealistic, person to hinder progress, and accuse others, of trying to destroy the country, trying to use bainwashing, but people are begining to pay attention, and get the right information, getting more inform but at the end of the day. people are going to be thankful, that some positive, action was taking with out the help of our congress because if we had to wait on congrees, the county would be worst off. It is a a lot of serpents coming on these post, getting paid to piss someone off, undermine progress, spreading lies, hate is just so disturbing! I feel the creator, will bless the best man for the job, being Obama! Since it has been so many hatemongers in congress do you think the National Guard should be on duty to make sure this is a fair election? They have tried so much to undermind this country, people wasn't taking notice until now and hopefully voters, can send them teaparty republicans, back where they came from, and trying to talk about the President's administration! May God bless the President.
Ask yourself this question. How do you make it easier for someone to quit searching for a job and give up? Food stamps, Welfare, and disability. The number of people on Food stamps and disability is at an all time high and the government is pushing these services like a drug dealer on a street corner. Then throw in the easing of the rules for people to receive welfare payments.
Of course it was on purpose. There are two ways to lower the unemployment rate. Get people back to work or have them leave the workforce all together. Pretty slick Obama.
Russ, I sure hope you are never in need, because you don't deserve any assistance. You should read Governor G. Wallace's 1963 Inauguration Speech. It is a testimonial to "true grit", "poke salad", and "forest acorns".
I would post you a link to it, but you fierce individualist hate when communist do things like that. Just walk to the Library and research it yourself. You will love it!
Incidentally, after Governor G. Wallace was shot and in need of assistance, he spend a percentage of his remaining life asking for forgivenness from those he had caused great harm to, figuratively and literally.
Same for Lee Atwater, the infamous republican presidential campaign operative. After his brain cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment, Mr. Atwater ordealed and saw his vigor sap away. It was during this time in his life, when he was crippled and radiated, that he realized how much people need other people. He discovered there are times in life when self-reliance is simply gone.
Need can humble the obstinate man or woman.
Russ: Actually the biggest way to get people out of the workforce is by removing unemployment benefits. You can't receive those benefit unless you are actually looking for work. WHOOPS. Looks like your Republican buddies shot themselves in the foot on that one didn't they?
You better send them an email. This is looking like yet another part of their "screw Obama" plan where they may have messed up big time.
Sorry to have kept you from your coloring books for so long Russ.
Why the Republicans Destroyed America’s Job Growth
The plan was to plot ways to put the brakes on any and all of newly-elected President Obama's plans to make a better future for Americans... and at the same time win back political power.
The strategy: "Show united and unyielding opposition to all the president’s economic policies. Challenge every single bill and every single campaign. Begin attacking Democrats in the media. Win the House in 2010. Attack Obama relentlessly in 2011. Win the White House and the Senate in 2012. Deny everything.”
Inauguration night, January 20, 2009, while newly-elected President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle celebrated, 15 top Republican lawmakers and strategists were spending four hours conjuring up ways to submarine his presidency at a private dinner in Washington’s high-end D.C. restaurant, the Caucus Room.
That dinner provides an insight to how quickly the Republicans began their efforts to poison the political climate, and the public’s impression of their new President.
Among the seditious Republicans in attendance were: Representatives Cantor, McCarthy, Ryan, Sessions, Hensarling, Hoekstra, and Lungren. Plus Senators DeMint, Kyl, Coburn, Ensign and /Corker. Also Newt Gingrich and Frank Luntz.
They’re still doing it.
In "Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the U.S. House of Representatives," Robert Draper answers the question of why bipartisanship has disappeared in the United States.
Now, the Republican party wants to shape-shift into the defender of our economic good.
It is obscene: Mitt Romney insists he wants only to fix our broken economy and streamline our government (code for efficiency downsizing), while he/republicans simultaneously are attempting to legislate our national morality.
They do know its mostly because 400,000 left the workforce, but they wont admit it...its MSNBC
you really know how its a horrible jobs report ... just google it. the only clowns who this its good are on this site.!!!
Only a Republican would think that adding jobs is horrible.
Only a Republican would think that adding more than 1million additional jobs than Bush did than during his whole eight years in office is horrible.
Only a Republican would think that doing far better economically than every other European country that experienced the same crash that we did is horrible.
Only a Republican would think 4.5 million jobs in 3.5 years is horrible.
Only a Republican would think a recovery this fast in 3.5 years when it took 6 years to recover from the Great Depression is horrible.
Then again the Republicans don't believe in history, science, math or economics. They would rather believe in magic and "Fox facts," or make believe, as most people would call it.
Get a grip on reality tea party, ask yourself these questions are you rich? Are you on
medicare? Are you getting social security? Are you against the job bill that president Obama sent to the house of Rep. to be voted on? Do you care about the American people? Why are you sooooooo.....against government if you are getting a check from
it? Stop being so angry with this president who is trying to save this country! Do you know that the rich people are using the tea party? They do not care about the poor people or middle class people think about it and stop being so Damn Mean!
I often wonder if these tea party people are rich. Ask yourself if you belong to this Republican party these questions why are you against the government if you are getting
a social security check? Are you getting medicare? Why oh why you people from the south vote against your own interest when it come to being a loyal member to the republican party? They don't give a Damn about the middle class of the poor folks!
Do you know the rich people who are shipping your jobs across the ocean are supporting the Tea Party! Do you care? Are you people full of hate with this president that you want the American people to suffer because you want him to fail! Get a grip on reality, Republican party do not care about people getting a job. President Obama
sent a job bill to the House of Rep.and the Republicans refuse to vote on this bill, they do not care about the American people. That is why I pray every night
that God will help our president get re elected again. Also, I pray that the people will vote these devils out of office, because they are full of hate and they are very very
mean! That is why I will be voting this year and I am going to take 10 people to the polls
to vote with me and I will continue to send money to the DNC.
THANK YOU MSNBC for listening to your viewers/bloggers by putting on Saturday and Sunday evening political shows!!! I enjoyed watching 'UP' and 'MHP' (a second time) Sunday after 1 PM PST...more weekend shows.
More? You want more? Yes, I want some more!!!
Cookie Monster
The argument Joe Scarborough made, this morning, that the inability of congress to pass legislation and deal with the economic crisis facing our nation is the fault of a president who has not been sufficiently congenial to the members of the republican house and senate, so as to persuade them to perform the duties for which they were elected, would be laughable if it were not so tragic.
Joe would have us believe, if only the president had chosen to invite republican members of congress to the white house for milk and cookies there would not have been a record number of republican filibusters in the senate, and another Joe would not have shouted the words “Your lie!” while the president was addressing the nation and members of congress.
And all this time I thought the Cookie Monster was a Muppet on a children's television show.
"Me want cookie!", "Me eat cookie!"
The republican congress has demonstrated a singular ability to propose and pass legislation that does nothing to mitigate the serious economic and environmental issues confronting our nation: national joblessness, rising healthcare cost, unequal opportunities for a good education, and climate change.
"Me want cookie!", "Me eat cookie!"
The republican congress has been more focused on social issues, more interested in passing legislation to diminish our democratic freedoms, than it has in enacting necessary regulatory reform to prevent another economic crises.
Me want cookie!", "Me eat cookie!"
The republican congress, interested in electing another republican president, does not seem to have a taste for governing. With each republican legislative success impeding progress towards economic recovery, the well funded efforts to prosecute an assault on our democratic liberties continues.
Me want cookie!", "Me eat cookie!"
The republican congress with a mouth full of cookies “democratic compromises” continues to proclaim the need to obstruct, insisting such actions are necessary, if their efforts to diminish the size of government are to succeed.
"Me want cookie!", "Me eat cookie!"
While it’s true the republicans elected to congress do not all share the charming characteristics of the cookie monster, such as his blue fur and wonky eyes, they do seem to share his gruff manner and enormous appetite for cookies. Shoving money resulting from the citizens united decision like chocolate chip cookie into their faces, and spewing political advertisements like crumbs onto the living rooms floors of the Americans.
"Om nom nom nom... cookie."
While Americans continue to struggle to recover from the near collapse of the nation’s economic system and are ignored by the republican congress.
"Me want cookie!", "Me eat cookie!"
Republican congressmen whose efforts to make permanent the Bush era tax cuts, the wars in the middle east, and attacks on public sector unions in an effort to reduce worker pay has done nothing but ensure the continued suffering of the American people.
So, Joe, don’t tell us the problem is milk and cookies. Don’t tell the American people, the reason republicans elected to congress have not worked with democrats to pass needed legislation is because the president hasn’t been sufficiently warm and friendly.
Why is the media so silent on how different the House of Representatives now that Republicans have control ? Compared when to when Democrats had control ? At the height of the democrat led House, job growth was above 250,000 per month for 2 to 3 months. Ever since the Republicans have taken control of the house, Job growth has fell to it's lowest 69,000 per month. Now the America by itself( just with whats left of democrats policies and no matter what real job growth can not be stopped. Cant's stop money being made) is producing 96,000 per month. The GOP led House has been the worst legislative body in congressional history. And not 1 word from the media. Not an once said about their non performance in the past 2 years. This is the kind of political party you get when you have the "Keystone Cops" as your media outlet. You only get 3 W's of the 5 ( Journalist should know what that means) and then make fake comparison of how both side are the same when the right is caught lying again or sidestepping an issue. The truth can never be totally hidden now a days. Not with so many social outlets. Man's dream is being fulfilled now, by having a voice to the world. I read every comment on here from different people all over this nation alone. Common thought will always triumph over a lie. You can not tell people gravity does not exist, nor we do not breath air. Alone you can catch us slipping (T.V). But in the real world were real money is involve, the truth is a must when people livelihoods are in stake. But then again how many multi-billionars know about the real grind of hard work to get something? Less then 1% of America lives were like Mitt and Anne Romney life. 95% of the world is still living what President Obama and First Lady Obama came from.
