It's been a tough week for Mitt Romney. But at least the neocons still like him.
While few leading voices in the GOP establishment are backing the Republican presidential nominee's bungled response to this week's embassy attacks, several former officials in President George W. Bush's administration are coming to Romney's defense.
For example, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld took to Twitter, writing: “The attacks on our embassies & diplomats are a result of perceived American weakness. Mitt Romney is right to point that out.”
Dan Senor, a key foreign policy adviser to Romney (and an Iraq War coalition spokesman under Bush), repeated Romney's false claim that Obama was guilty of "sympathizing with attackers."
And Liz Cheney, former State Department official and daughter of former Vice President Cheney, penned an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal arguing that, because of Obama, America is no longer feared. She also echoed Romney's charge (also false) that "apologizing for America" is a cornerstone of Obama's foreign policy.
Romney's coterie of advisers includes several former Bush Administration officials. Indeed, 17 of his 24 foreign policy advisors are Bush-era neocons.
"These are the folks Romney is aligning himself with," MSNBC host Al Sharpton said Thursday. "They are the people coming to his defense and guiding his policies."
Michael Tomasky of The Daily Beast/Newsweek told Sharpton that Romney feels he "needs the support of this group to get into the White House. ... We're gearing up for a replay of Bush foreign policy."

This was an exceptionally important segment, and I want to express my sincere appreciation to the Politics/Nation Team, for running with this story. Keep this story alive, and highly visible, to the November voters - they need to know this.
There is a pathological obsession with Romney rather than Obama's politics and the craziness in at he Middle East.I keep on turning on your shows but on and on there is obsession on Romney.Personally one thing I appreciate about your network is freedom of speech.. I do think the President has appeared weak.
When he rain in 2008 I enjoyed listened to him tear apart the Bush policies..it was during a war. You lost a viewer and Obama has lost a vote. Asa swing voter trust me I am not alone.
To be far and decent face the problem and admit that yes even Obama is fallible.
p.s clearly the Arab spring and the Mideast situation is a mess...It is 1979 all over again..
Obama has never apologized to anyone and if he has show me. Mitt owes Obama an apology for lying. An apology was made in 2006 on the Danish cartoons. He said,"We find them offensive and we certainly understand why Muslims would find these images offensive". Guess who? G.W.Bush.
With Offshore Willy at the controls, and these clowns advising him, expect a couple more wars in the Middle East, and guess which kids are going to be sent to fight them?
certainly not romney kids. they are to special to fight for their country
I don't know what is worse.
Romney surrounding himself with the same neocon delusional fools who got us into Iraq, or Romney himself actually professing fidelity to the neocon foreign policy.
The voices of ignorance, hatred and avarice are busy at work in the Romney campaign. My greatest fear from Romney was a repeat of the Bush policies that put us all in the brink of a Great Depression. The cut in taxes to the rich, the unpaid wars in Iraq, The initial irresponsible gift of money to the banks and even foreign entities at the end of the Bush era, have, all, put us all in danger of economic collapse.
Now Romney has doubled down on his ignorance, his fundamentalist, pseudo-conservative view of the world, and his unrelenting personal ambition , to get us into a religious war that will undo the repair work effectuated on the economy; he will nullify the intelligent leadership and good will created by President Obama and sink us into an untenable position with our allies. Thus creating an environment of chaos, and plunge us into a third class status as a nation.
The American true conservatives, must come forward and save The Republican party by restoring sanity to The party of Abraham Lincoln. A true conservative does not enact laws that allows government to limit human suffrage. Voter suppression is beneath the party responsible for the Emancipation Proclamation. The party of Eisenhower knew that allowing THE AMERICAN MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX to run rampant would only curtail the freedom of our citizens here and the freedom of all people through out the world.
It was Ronald Reagan, who knew that comprehensive immigration reform would eliminate the suffering of refugees that were being treated as second class citizens and place the undocumented population on track to become American citizens in the same tradition that caused France to forever laud us as the champions of the poor, the weak and the disenfranchised.
The ignorance, outright hatred and avarice within the governing faction of the Republican Party, must be stopped. Are there any Republicans of good will left in America??????????
Will the followers of Jesus stand up? The writing on THE STATUE OF LIBERTY, are principles etched into the mind of all Americans. That is so simply because every church, synagogue and temple, in America professes those principles of universal charity and good will. Religious freedom, by definition requires more of us that just being bystanders when the government wants to limit your freedom to chose how you want to live, with whom and whether you should undergo changes of the mind or of the body and of the spirit. Our religious freedom must tell us that legislating personal matters that do not in any way infringe on the rest of us are violations of an amendment to the constitution that our forefathers fought and died for. Let us resist any measure that seeks to violate the right of any human being. By doing so we are in fact protecting our own.
