Alex Wagner, host of MSNBC's NOW with Alex Wagner, sat down with Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., Thursday to talk about Suu Kyi's journey from prisoner to Parliament member. The 67-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner was in Washington to receive the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor in the United States.
The event, hosted by Amnesty International, featured a personal story from Wagner about the importance of Suu Kyi as a metaphor for the fight against oppression. After Suu Kyi was introduced, there was a question-and-answer session that contained discussions ranging from political prisoners to Russian punk band Pussy Riot.
"The younger generation must go a step further," Suu Kyi said as she discussed the need to free the minds of those who imprison others. "With every generation, there must be improvement."
