Mitt Romney is trying hard to woo Latino voters this week, downplaying the positions he took on immigration during the Republican primaries. Many Democrats are not convinced.
"I don't think it's going to work," Annette Taddeo of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party told MNSBC's Ed Schultz on Thursday's The Ed Show. "I think it's too little, too late."
Schultz agreed, pointing to what he said was a poor performance by Romney at the Univision forum in Florida on Wednesday. The White House hopeful was defensive about his prior support for self-deportation, wouldn't give a straight answer on whether the nation should follow Arizona's lead on immigration, and offered no specifics on how to deal with the millions of young people brought to the country illegally by their parents, Schultz noted.
Romney's bid to win over Latino voters comes the same week that Mother Jones dropped an explosive video in which the Republican told a room of wealthy donors that his father was born in Mexico. He then half-jokingly bemoans the fact that he himself was not Mexican, because minority status would give him "a better shot of winning this."
Taddeo called Romney's remarks "very offensive," adding that "it takes more than being a Mexican for us to vote for somebody, or being a Hispanic for us to vote for somebody."
During the Univision forum, Romney promised to "staple a green card" to diplomas of foreign nationals who earn advanced degrees in the U.S. He also made a similar comment in the secret video—though, in that case, but he didn't stop there.
"Gosh, I'd love to bring in more legal immigrants that have skills ... I'd like to staple a green card to every Ph.D. in the world and say, 'Come to America, we want you here,'" he said in the video. "Instead, we make it hard for people who get educated here or elsewhere to make this their home. ... Unless, of course, you have no skill or experience, in which case you're welcome to cross the border and stay here for the rest of your life," he said, to laughter from the crowd. "It's very strange."
"He's trying to become this person we all know he isn't," said Taddeo.

wtf???? does that mean the moochers are here but the SMART ONES have not crossed the border yet-we are still waiting for them???? WTF IS WRONG WITH HIM????
he is a racist. He true feelings are in the tape...Shameful
Condescending.....and those who are there are guilty of participating in this condescending, arrogant posturing.
you see, he have so much money that he don't know how to act with the 47% that he just called moochers. Well let me tell you something Mr. Robme, I am one of those 47% that you call moochers, and I work and I pay my taxes and I don't get government help, and I am proud that our government help those that are in need, when they need it. Not everyone stays on Welfare all there lives. Where I work at you can only be on TANF for 5 years if you have children under 5 otherwise you gotta go to work as soon as your child goes to school, as for food stamps, some people don't make enough money to support their children so they get help with food stamps. What is wrong with that..We pay alot of payroll taxes, federal and state and also Sociial Security Taxes, plus medical, dental and vision insurace, and medical insurance goes up every year...The rich pay a lot less taxes then us 47% who works, and I am ashamed of you for taking it out on our elderly who have worked all their lives to collect their Social Security and Medicare...Boy your mama and daddy should be ashamed of you..You was given a silver platter from them and you think you better than the rest of us..ARE you THE ANTICHRIST or what...How can you sleep at night thinking that the rich should get richer and the poor gets poorer. All your cronies and you can go to HELL...You disgust me..
I work and I pay my taxes and I don't get government help
We need more like you
As a Canadian it is obvious to me that the American people have been victimized in some ways by their government. The very idea that they would or could see themselves as victims is hilarious. I pity Mitt Romney for being unable to see the citizen whose vote he covets. He has missed the point and lost his way. God Bless America.
GOP Falling Apart as Tommy Thompson Blames Romney for His Plummet in the Polls
By: Jason EasleySeptember 20th, 2012
Thompson said, “The Presidential thing is bound to have an impact on every election. Whether you’re a Democrat or Republican. If you’re a standard-bearer for the Presidency is not doing well, it’s gonna reflect on the down ballot.”
It’s not his fault that according to the Marquette Law School poll a nine point lead in August has become a nine point deficit in September. Thompson is all about blaming Romney, and attacking the poll. If Romney doesn’t turn it around soon, we are going to seeing the full blown return of the Republican circular firing squad.
Republicans had themselves so convinced that all they had to do was show up in order to beat Obama and take back the Senate that they are having a difficult time adjusting to reality.
Thompson has not done himself any favors with voters by attacking Baldwin’s sexual orientation. In fact, part of Thompson’s slide can be attributed to the fact that he has gone from leading with Independents, 47%-37% to now trailing Baldwin, 50%-38%. Baldwin has also benefited from a six point gain with Democrats as members of her own party are coming home.
Just like Republicans decided that their defeat in 2008 was Sarah Palin’s fault, the GOP is getting ready to blame Mitt Romney for what is quickly turning in to a disastrous election cycle.
It is as if Republicans can’t comprehend that they are losing to a stronger candidate and a better organized party. (There’s a sentence that I never thought I’d type.)
The Republican Party still lacks leadership, direction, and a coherent message that doesn’t involve screwing everyone else in order to give the rich more.
Pathetic Looser . . . Party of one douche bag running as a faux Right-Wing Nut for President . . . your table on the SS Teatanic at the party for racist pigs is ready ! Your life vest can be found under your seat !
Hope - well said!
Sad but true and funny in a very dark way.
Flash! Univision blasts Obama for his broken promises. Obama blames everyone else. Again!
No broken promises, but republican obstruction, yes. Making noise here?
Romey Noodle is a racist!
Bigot is the word you are looking for.
Number one Ed, Romney is not suffering in the polls. Stop lying on you TV and radio show. If you don't, pretty soon, you will not have any viewers or listeners. All you have now is your few blind followers anyway. Lowest rated show on the lowest rated network......BSNBC.
Another thing Ed. Stop saying Republicans are jumping ship. That is a big lie. Just because you play one snippet of a sound bite of carefully chosen Republicans by you and your staff....and they say one comment about what Gov. Romney said...maybe they would have said it different or that is not their view...or something like that....DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE JUMPING SHIP. Stop lying Ed.
Hey lefties and Ed...let me ask you this. Now finally ....Carney has admitted that this was a terrorist attack on our ambassador and the Seals.......Oh but Obama still says it all was because of the video............DOES THAT MEAN CARNEY IS JUMPING SHIP? Of course not. But Ed says whoever says anything different or a different way than Gov. Romney is jumping ship.
What a liar. What a spinner. Reporting lies to the the people who watch and listent to him....just to try to get people not to vote for Mitt Romney. Boy am I glad the number of people who do listen and watch Ed...you can count on one hand...and those people are far left progressive loonies. Thank goodness!!
Romney must think Latinos have impaired memory and can't recall the positions he took during the Republican primary. All this talk of "walking back" his views is hilarious, since that's all he's done concerning ALL his positions, not just the immigration issue. Everyone knows he was (is) a moderate, but he cast himself as "severely conservative" (whatever that means) just to get the nomination.
Back to the point: Romney will never get the percentage of Latino support he needs to win the Presidency because Republican views on minorities, any minorities, are not inclusive. Just look at the Republican National Convention. They trotted out a few Hispanics to show Republican "diversity," which is such a joke. Contrast that with the Democratic National Convention, which showed Americans of all colors, even White! That's the America people live in; a vibrant, diverse, and messy collection of races and cultures. And that is what Republican's seem to fear the most, that the America they want to "preserve," with a White face on it, is morphing into something else. News Flash: That's the direction this country is moving towards. America will have a majority of minorities, including Latinos who are now realizing their political power. And that has them running scared. Just view Romney's 47% video to hear how the Latino vote is a danger to the nation. Wow.
A "Self-deportation" and "veto the DREAM Act" position will not garner Latino support and no one is buying that the Republican is the big tent party. All they want is the Latino vote and then for Latinos to go away after the election.
Not gonna happen.
The Hispanic Vote and the Republican Party
Arizona's 'banned' Mexican “American” books
(Robert Cintli Rogrizues, Guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 18, January 2012) “First, the Tucson school district came for the Mexican American studies program. Now, it's come for its books
In the aftermath of the suspension of the Tucson Unified School District's Mexican American studies department, TUSD has confiscated and continues to confiscate MAS teaching materials. Besides artwork and posters etc, that includes books. This move came in response to an unconstitutional measure, HB 2281, which was specifically created to dismantle the highly successful MAS-TUSD department.
Amid a massive backlash, TUSD officials have backpedaled, claiming that the confiscation of the books that took place after the 10 January MAS suspension does not constitute a banned books list. While TUSD claims that only seven book titles were ordered boxed and carried off, the fact is that the confiscation – in some cases, in front of the students – involved more than the seven titles. But the seven books that are "not banned" (but merely "confiscated") are:
Critical Race Theory, by Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic
500 Years of Chicano History in Pictures, edited by Elizabeth Martinez
Message to Aztlán, by Rodolfo Corky Gonzales
Chicano! The History of the Mexican Civil Rights Movement, by F Arturo Rosales
Occupied America: A History of Chicanos, by Rodolfo Acuña
Pedagogy of the Oppressed, by Paulo Freire
Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years, by Bill Bigelow”
Republicans say they welcome “ALL” to the GOP. They want everyone that believes in conservative values to come and listen to the message of the Republican Party. “Hispanic-Americans” take heed as Mitt Romney comes to your town to espouse the benefits of voting for him, the Tuscson Unified School District has given you a glimpse into a Republican controlled House, Senate and Whitehouse. In freedom loving, First Amendment protecting “AMERICA”; books are being confiscated from our children and it is REPUBLICANS that are spearheading this movement.
These actions are not being taken against “UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS” but “YOU” my Hispanic-“AMERICAN” friends. They don’t want you to become “UPPITY” they don’t want you to know the contributions you have made to this Country. The GOP does not want you to know your unique history and how prominent you are in this County’s History.
They simply don’t want you to know that Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California all were part of Nueva Espana (New Spain) until 1821, when Mexico won its independence from Spain. The rest is United States History, California to Texas become part of the United States in the early to mid-1800’s.
The Republicans in Arizona hysterically use the “La reconquista”, a radical movement calling for Mexico to “reconquer” America’s Southwest. Honestly, this is VERY INSULTING to Mexican-Americans and Hispanic Americans who love this Country every bit as much as Americans of Anglo heritage, French heritage, Irish, Italian, Afro-American heritage, Asian heritage and every other ethnic and racial group that make up this GREAT COUNTRY and melting pot. I don’t know a single Mexican American or Hispanic American that wants to be ANYTHING but “AMERICAN. We are Americans!
The Republicans tell you that you are welcomed in the GOP, but only on election cycles, their Party is 97% White-Anglo, and trust me they want to keep it that way. Just listen closely to their rhetoric. Party leaders know that demographics are against them, but one leader was very honest when he didn’t’ know America was listening and I quote MITT ROMNEY, “latino’s could become a problem for the Republicans and the Nation”
No Mr. Romney Latino’s “MAY” become a “PROBLEM” for the GOP, but they will continues to be hard working, contributing citizens of America and they too will do what they can so that their children can participate in the AMERICAN DREAM…Latino’s will NEVER be a problem to this Nation! Do you hear me Mitt and do you get it GOP! Words every four years ain’t gonna cut it……the Democratic Party and President Obama have TRULY been WELCOMING! They get it! We have been here since Columbus!
If Latinos all vote based exclusively on Immigration Romney may have a problem, but I think Unemployment and the cost of living under Obama is probably a higher priority for most voters. That said the question is which canidate would be better to address these issues. I think Obama has clearly demonstrated a lack of ability reduce both Unemployment and the cost of living. Romney has a outstanding record in private sector business and has created a lot of jobs. Romney also had one of the Nation's lowest Unemployment Rate while Governor. I will not be surprised when Romney take a good percentage of the Latino Vote.
Hey, I've been telling you-all for months that Willard Mittens Romney is:
El Candidato Manchurano!
Now he's finally beginning to admit it. The curtain is rising: WMR--agent of the reconquista.
Beware, Amerikkka!
¿No comprende usted? Nosotros no nos fiamos de usted ni le creemos, RobMe.
Why is the news not discussing how offensive it was for Mitt to deliberately darken his skin to talk to Latinos? This to me was a huge insult, as he must have assumed that if he had "their darker skin", he would be seen as being Latino. He bused in blacks for the NAACP, called everyone not rich (seniors, veterans, low income families) victims and insulted us. He needs to be called out for his deliberately darkening his skin to try to win votes.........pathetic!
Romney should “self-deport” himself back to Mexico,
where his grandpa fled to avoid US marriage monogamy laws.
‘Cause Prince Mitt not only wants to kill the Dream Act,
but the American Dream as well.
We need a President for ALL the people.
Let's face it....Mitt does not have a way with words...like he said he can not state a sentence "elegantly" If this is the case, I don't know how he'd win the debate with the POTUS. He'd be fumbling & stumbling for words when he faces the President. Calling the children born here and was brought here by their parents who entered the country illegally, does not mean the children are ILLEGAL ALIEN...they are undocumented yes, but not illegal alien. This guy is so insensitive he does not think before he speaks.
I think there is an audit smell'in... Rom u are a real tool. Really as Racheal would say... Tell the IRS they are working for Obama not the rich.
