On Friday’s The Rachel Maddow Show, Maddow speculated that it would take something pretty terrible to make Mitt Romney want to talk about his tax returns more than anything else – say, his starting lineup of surrogates putting distance between themselves and the campaign, perhaps even fleeing to Iowa with an eye on 2016?
Earlier this week, Tim Pawlenty abandoned his post as Romney campaign co-chair to help dismantle Wall Street regulations as the new leader of the Financial Services Roundtable. The move inspired Maddow to take a look at the travel schedules of some other Romney-affiliated GOP heavyweights. And she discovered they’re heading to Iowa.
Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal both announced plans to join a bus tour led by social conservative group The Family Leader, where they’ll stop in Des Moines, Pella and Ottumwa next week to protest retaining Iowa Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins, whose 2009 decision helped legalize marriage equality in the state.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was in Sioux City on Thursday campaigning for Congressman Steve King’s 5th annual Defenders of Freedom Fundraiser. The appearances have fueled rumors that all three could be considering presidential runs in 2016.
“When your own top tier surrogates are saying ‘Forget this guy, forget this year, let’s talk 2016 and me!’ Then it’s time to change the subject to anything,” Maddow said. “Even to your tax returns.”

Mitt paid his fair share of taxes, signed Epstein's Mother
Oh, good. I was pining for more images of Santorium in his sweater vests. Can't wait for 2016, another clown car is rolling....The bully, the sanctimonious prig, and the damply charismatic one...
Rmoney said a short time ago that if he paid too much in taxes he wasn't qualified to President. Well, he was right. He paid more than he needed to...most likely to make his rate high enough to not raise attention, so, according to his own words, he's not qualified. Of course, that's not really news, but still........
I live in Iowa and I was trying to figure out why all these guys were coming here--Chris Christie even said he would be back before the election. Mitt hasn't really spent much of his time in Iowa...lots of discussion about the Republican votes not going to Rmoney and loyalty to Ron Paul. Thanks Rachel for your insight!
Is there any way to stop this continuing campaigning? I have always wondered, do some people run so they have an income? Remember Christine O'Donnell's aid said she used campaign funds to pay her rent and groceries. Perhaps fixed terms for President, Congress, and Senate. Congress is already part time. Look how many days they take off. And the amount of money spent, especially now, is almost immoral.
kathy sine you re right we should be able to stop it, Mitt should just be able to admit defeat and pack his bags and go home. I know the Koch brothers are furious that he has wasted their money in an attempt to buy the election and he lost it for them, but they are very enterprising and on Karl Rove's advise they are now centering their money on the Congressional and Senatorial races to exert control of the government. This is why you see what some consider the GOP heavy hitters in states where you will see those races and making sure they maintain GOP support and try to control both houses of the government if possible. Big money wants to control this country, take banks back to deregulation, wipe out EPA and allow as much lobby money as need be to buy whatever favorable action they want from our Tea Party and GOP boys in Washington. Sad part is many of those voters being influenced by this group of rich vultures do not even know who has or is purchasing their vote.
Piyush "Bobby" Jindal
If like many conservatives, he supports personhood, it should mean more than a few complications, and for lack of evidence a challenge to many voters right to vote and serve etc.
He was born four months after his parent immigrated, (so I've heard). If he was conceived and personhood started, he would still have been conceived in his home country. Being born to see the world the first time has made him a US Citizen.
Even if he gets a pass, the many states of the U.S. could have varying laws on the matter, leaving a whole lot of people wondering about their own citizenship.
Of course to certain in the future would require some certification of conception, and that would have done in a hospital, or 'conceivably' using some untoward advance in marriage technology. It gets very untoward, since marriage laws would have to be used to check on consummation of marriage, and the fact that a great number of marriages are arranged post conception. And marriages would have to be proven faithful.
The current crop of citizens should the need for voter suppression continue, may have ask their parents some personal questions as to where they were located when the event happened, date, times, and financial evidence. The possibility of anchor-insemination while traveling abroad.
Concern for personhood at conception, will as political issue outweigh, all other financial, production, economic issues as the conservatives pursue distracting, wasteful, and time consuming issues that if resolved would only require a whole new set ridiculous laws cooked up to keep everyone occupied and not employed. But who needs any preconceived notions…
Well then there is the "Save the Ova" movement, dedicated to saving "human ova", that have escaped conception, improvements in birth control could provide a way to "Save the Ova" for later insemination, the male counterpart being less a problem. Accident victim, organ donation, medical procedures all could intrusively legislated, as well as mandating as many implantations to carried to term by unemployed women. Population growth be darned as it is easily ignored by politics, as are all matters of resource use, energy production, food tress in the environment, and quality of life.
God will provide any additional planets, or genetic engineering will make people, smaller and smaller, the one foot man reduced to the one inch man, why you could keep several in your desk drawer.
