Actor Samuel L. Jackson has a message to volunteers for President Obama's 2008 election campaign who have fallen asleep at the wheel of this election cycle: "wake the f*** up."
In the Web video released Wednesday, Jackson teams up with a precocious young politico who is out to mobilize disillusioned former Obama supporters. "Little Suzy" unleashes Jackson's rhyming, sing-song message laced with profanity on everyone in her family: politically passive parents, apathetic siblings, and amorous grandparents,
"Sorry my friend, but there's no time to snore/an out-of-touch millionaire has just declared war/on schools, the environment, unions, fair pay/ We're all on our own if Romney has his way/And he's against safety nets. If you fall, tough luck/ So I strongly suggest that you wake the f*** up."
The ad riffs off of Jackson's recent narration of "Go the F*** to Sleep," a "children's book for adults" written by Adam Mansbach.
The Jewish Council for Education and Research, which produced the ad, is the same pro-Obama super PAC that bankrolled comedian Sarah Silverman's video from 2008 characterizing "The Great Schlep" of young Jewish voters. Silverman came out with another Web video for this election cycle that targeted voter suppression and went on to top political video charts last week.
Jackson's less-than family friendly, NSFW version of the video can be found here:

That's right, let's move from the slippery slope, right on down into the gutter. As we all watch the use of the English language crash, we see, more and more, that even great thoughts get lost, in the garbage of unnecessary words. Even a great thought can falter, when the vocabulary does not reflect brilliance.
The English language crashed the day the Americans started speaking the American Version of English, then there is the south who have their own English very different then the north's version of English. That you can't grasp that American English is a bastardization of English just shows your own ignorance. Not to mention the French, native American, Spanish, Dutch and German towns cities and counties as well as states, many of which are not English names as well.
I write a very small collection of sentences, on the need to, basically, watch the profanity, if one wants to get a valid point across, and, wham, whomitmay goes off into a tangent. Well, I am going to assume that my tip-toeing through the tulips, so to speak, is not adequite. Yes, it is always better to keep the positive on other's thoughts, and, if negative, bring it down on oneself, alone. ☺
No you just attempt to use racism to start flame wars. Really take your English only bull@!$%# back to free republic where stupidity and ignorance are king.
Thanks for the English lesson Whom - you enlighten everyday. I will make sure to tell the kids to not do their English homework tonight, because speaking proper English is useless and racist.
Although, I have seen that many kids are taking that advice as English SAT scores are at a 40 year low. I guess getting into and graduating from college isn't that important though - in this economy you can't get a job anyway.
OBAMA 2012! NO JOBS! FREE PHONES!
Well Fred, while you're hollering, maybe you should investigate the origins of "Black English" and the reasons African-Americans use it... The history ain't pretty, and there are some powerful social reasons it evolved the way it did. Are you going to deny those folks their heritage when it's likely their ancestors were here before ours? And note to Lost Cannon: it's not the usage of appropriate English that's racist; it's the attacks on another people's culture. Any idiot who read the the title of this clip should've been prepared for some off-color material. But feel free to beat up straw men; it's practically a national sport for the right wing crowd.
And Fred, are you going to claim your own speech is on par with the Queen's English? There are noteworthy differences, but I can tell you the reason English grammar and syntax is the way it is can be traced to British nationalism around the 14th Century, when they eliminated French as the "official" language of the British Isles.
BTW, your spelling skills are inadequate.
Relax Cabbie - just having some fun with the leftists liberal use of playing the race card. If you could though, please tell me more about the history of the English language.
I could not care less about the Samuel L. Jackson ad - he is a performer and that is expected. However, is Fred incorrect when he says the English language is basically under assault? What does it say when SAT English scores are at a 40 year low? Is the SAT racist? Are English classes racist because, as you claim, they "attack other people's culture?"
Fred is just engaging in a bit of sanctimonious smear, and any "assault" on the English language is just ginned up nonsense. And alas, any "History of the English Language" is far beyond the scope of this blogsite. I had a grad class in it nearly thirty years ago, and it offered some relief from a few of the neuroses inflicted on me by overzealous teachers (BTW, I used to be one). Quite simply, culture and environment dictate "usage," and usage may or may not follow "established" rules. As I said, the "formal rules" were fixed by grammarians beginning just before Shakespeare's time and continue to this day. Language can essentially be thought of as a "living" being undergoing evolution.
As for SAT scores going down, well, class sizes have been going up, and school expenditures have been going down, but I haven't followed whether education researchers have suggested a connection (although it seems obvious to me). There is also a "well known bias" in testing that minority groups have campaigned to eliminate, but there are forces operative that tend to create a "stagnant status quo."
"Whomitmay" also seems to have a grasp on these factors as well, and what is clear is they are irrelevant to discussing Mr. Jackson's ad. I'm not particularly interested in that ad myself; most celebritties are pretty unsophisticated politically (George Clooney and Martin Sheen are two exceptions), and I generally reject "lowest common denominator" tactics in political rhetoric.
As such, I've concluded your notion of "fun" is pretty immature, and your choice of talking points using "leftist liberal" is equally unsophisticated and amounts to unstubstantiated name calling. You do seem to be operating at a higher level of functioning than the Longey troll below, however. His racism has been thoroughly documented here repeatedly, but he lacks the character or manhood to admit it.
So, the conclusion here, is that if I believe that profanity weakens an otherwise brilliant comment, I am a racist. Your logic seems truely impeccable.
Well, here I go again...
Fred has engaged in a bit of pseudo logic where he grabs some old clothes, stuffs them full of straw, obtains a pillow case (or paper sack in a pinch), draws a face on it and then liberally douses it with gasoline or other inflammable. After setting fire to his creation, he now proclaims victory for the forces of enlightenment.
You're allowed your view that profanity may weaken an argument, Freddie, but your vocabulary word of the day is S-U-B-J-E-C-T-I-V-E. It may or may not, depending on the beholder. And of course in my profession where swearing is a requisite job skill, the rest of your claims about a "war on English" are full of @!$%#. You're welcome to try to get a message to a recalcitrant drunk in some other way, however. Good luck.
Fred, the lesson of the day is that questioning or being critical of a liberal minority, for whatever reason, is racist. Also, referring to a liberal as a liberal is apparently offensive as well.
Cabbie, I function as a much higher level than the vast majority of people in here. This isn't the Bilderberg Group you know.
Well, Lost Cannon, if you're going to claim a higher level of functioning you should proofread better ("as a much higher level"?).
Right now it looks to me like you're pretty much suffering from the same fetish for straw men arguments as the others, and that implied "because I said so" rationale is pretty low level stuff. So, too, is parroting the Koch Head and Republican Talking Oinks® as so many do... I'll document those charges if need be, BTW.
The problem is you folks use "liberal" as a pejorative (see Bush, Geo. H.W.) and think you're winning with your name calling because you assume the silence that follows indicates more than folks simply trying to be polite while thinking you're stupid. Same thing happens here on Planet Utah. "Radical environmentalist" is one of Orrin Hatch's invectives...
Be careful handling black powder around a guy who swings a real light saber.
Not being a soured and angry old person, I thought it was funny. (The version I watched had the profanity bleeped out, but even had it not, I've heard the word before.)
Lighten up! Good grief!
Romney + China = a match made in Heaven. The cost of labor is too good for Romney to pass up. Romney will be America's first "Out-Sourcer-In-Chief" President.
**Obama/Biden 2012**
For every Sidney Poitier, Morgan Freeman, Bill Cosby, and Usher there 5 Samuel Jacksons, Ice Cubes, Flavor Faves, and 2-Pac Shakurs, and its a crying shame!
Three Dixie Chicks, Five boy-band members, Two Cyrus' and a Bieber.
What's your point Keith?
There are role models; the four listed in my second grouping certainly are not, and should not be elevated to be such, flocker. Sorry, I though that would be self evident to any discerning reader!
Obvious racism is evident to every one else, however.
Racism to state that the filthy mouthed hoodlum impersonating entertainers that the current population of youth try to emulate should not be elevated as role models? How so, weak brained one!
Last I checked he paid his dues for his youthful stuff. I mean you were saying that about George Zimmerman a while back, weren't you?
People aren't permitted a bit of redemption? Not very Christian of you. Your mother probably wouldn't approve...
Who are you talking about, paid his dues? Jackson is playing the part of a Quentin Tarrantino villian in that political add, and nothing more, Cab Driver.
And I haven't seen Zimmerman making any political adds, so why go there, fool?
I am an Obama supporter, watch you (Matthews & Madow) regularly; didn't like your rewrite last night as it was a "stretch." Your staff clearly works hard to come up with something nightly; tonite's about the draft was fine, but don't allow your total dislike of him (which I agree with for the most part) color your broadcasts, and limit it to things like tonight, which made great sense.
always liked Jackson as a Actor and enjoyed many films he was in. I just watched this and admire him for supporting his Political choices, but as a person so many admire, he could have cleaned up his language, he didnt need to resort to f-bombs to get his viewpoint across. alot of people see it as weakness.
Unclench Bill. As noted above, English SATs are down, but the test is largely for reading comprehension, not vocabulary. If you had read the entry carefully, you would have noted:
Now get out your SAT prep book.
agree with Bill Morin...don't need the F bombs, should have hired Cosby or Freeman.
funny and mostly true.
adam- the whole point is to shock people awake to what is going on. The shock value gets their attention, at least that is what I believe he is doing.
