In a heated exchange that was much more tense and rapid-fire than the main event, MSNBC host Chris Hayes argued with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani about tax policy—and Rudy's own security firm—after the first presidential debate.
After Giuliani stressed the need to stop "feeding the beast" of federal spending, Hayes, the host of MSNBC's Up with Chris Hayes, asked Giuliani point-blank about federal contracts he said Giuliani's firm holds with the Department of Homeland Security.
"Does the Department of Homeland Security and related spending through contracts on say, private consulting firms like yourself, does that count as feeding the beast or not?"
Giuliani denied that his firm held such contracts.
Hayes later tweeted, "I would list all of Giuliani's gov't contracts through the years, but it's too long for twitter."
Watch the video above.

I was hoping you would have had a chance to comment about that on air. I figured you wouldn't have asked if you didn't know of at least one.
Chris should have had one company to ask him if that was a government contract...be ready Chris, you're too smart no to be.

pum!!! it appears Giulani does has some say on this
Great, all Republicans want to cut federal spending except when the fed spends it on them. Good call, Chris.
It's the "I got mine now screw you mentality". I'm a " used to be Republican".
Jo smith....You are also an idiot
this site is full of the sickos who think obamma is god. If he is re-elected You will be crying so loud because you were fooled . And all the people who have common sense will be saying you got what you deserved. The sad part is we will have to live in the same hell that you created...U.S.A. will never have elections again.obamma will rule this land . He is a very very scary man. He has tested the waters to see how far he can go with his socialist ideas to destroy this country from within and you all have a blind eye to what is instore .
You republicons who insist on posting in obviously left leaning sites is obviously a cry for attention. Sad little children.
Republican Voters 2012-criminal by association, ignorant by design
I just noticed tonight that Giuliani has some very big caps on his teeth. :)
I can't get over the fact that Giuliani can stand there and say he won without mentioning Romneys lies!
President Obama isn't use to being 'challenged' and 'pushed'???????? WTF...he is challenged and pushed every day by the GOP....who do they think they are fooling???? Not me....
The GOP are the epitome of Hypocracy. They lie and cover up the truth and think people are too stupid to research the facts. Go get him Chris expose Giuliani for the two-faced liar he is. Incredulous! Obama 2012!
This tax discussion is so bogus. We had a 6.3% (+/-)employee withholding tax, matched by employers. Since Shrub didn't think 'we' were shopping enough he temporarily reduced that withholding percentage. I got $30 more a month. People who benefited from a temporary tax reduction in different tax brackets (for the wealthy, very wealthy, very, very wealthy have made out very like bandits. The Prez needs to restore all tax rates to all taxpayers. AND eliminate those pesky loopholes. Romney is dreaming that the welfare to oil companies is going to small drillers. Big Oil is taking it's share too. nem
Most of us still realize that president Obama is a brilliant man who surrounds himself with brilliant people. This was strategy people nothing more nothing less. Obama stood there all night and let Mitwit tie his own noose. Everything Mitwit said was a complete flip flop and a blatant lie from what he said not more than 2 weeks ago. We all know Mitt will say whatever he needs to say depending on who he is talking to.
Obama was never going to get him to admit to his lies and he played him just like he wanted him. Watch for it...watch for it New Obama Ads on debate night “Mitwit said this, but all during his campaign this is what he really said”.
Obama was never meant to be on the attack dog that's Biden’s job. Believe me Joe Biden is going to rip lying Ryan a new one. He needed Mitwit to lie.
Don't jump ship now people, if you think for one moment the tea party is going to go along with what Romney was shoveling to night? No way but they needed to get up there and do what he does best lie and flip flop. So he will have the elusion that he would make a good President otherwise they don’t stand a chance in hell of him getting into the White House.
I have to omit it was hard to watch at first lol. Then I started to see it being played out. Obama had this sort of smile on his face as if to say OK that was a lie, check, next." It was almost like a chess game and he was setting up the board.
All you MSNBC talk show host I was disappointed with your comments afterwards, calm down and just keep putting the true Mitt out there everyday like you have been.
SPEAK THE TRUTH! I don't think the American people are "zipper head Freds" nor will they believe the lies that were spewed out like water! I think you were in my mind! DITTO! DITTO!
There's no doubt Biden will go after Ryan.thats true Biden.
Biden needs to bring his dirty laundry with him to the debate because Ryan will take him to the cleaners.
I agree with you. We've heard Romney say what he will do, we've heard the lies, and we've seen the tape. It wasn't necessary for the President to attack on each of those issues. He laid out his plan, backed up with research and facts (which Romney called lies) that's what a debate is. Romney's statements and responses had no substance. He even said if you tell a lie often enough, people begin to believe it. A skunk does not morph into a rabbit.
I think you're right... Still, I wanted to see some outrage or a little indignation at least over a rich @!$%# spouting lies while millions of people suffer directly from their thievery. The unfairness of it all just makes the whole system stink.
Give me Joe Biden, an honest guy; someone who still feels what it's like to live in the trickle down desert of the American Dream.
I was depressed during the debate because Obama didn't call out enough of the lies, although he did several times. I am comforted by what Gloria Whatley says. I totally agree that the MSNBC crew needed to be more measured in their responses. And I think Biden is the secret weapon.
Amen! Its all strategy. Well said. I'm still trying to figure out how someone can win a debate with lies!!! And why is MSNBC missing the point on this? Dissapointed in them.
I agree entirely with Gloria Whatley. President Obama was in perfect form: stately, commanding, and resolute. I was proud to see him present in such fashion. Intelligence over "stupidity, agressiveness, bullying, greed, and boisterouness"!
I am quite disappointed in the narrowmindedness of the pundits. Rev. Al was about the only person to see the calculations involved in the strategy.
Let's hope the next 2 presidential candidate debates present the opportunity for real issues to arise with substance from both candidates. There needs to be a more capable moderator, one who can stick to the established rules and not allow the likes of Mitt to overpower. This is not debating; this is having a tantrum in the board room. The United States of America is not the board room. It is one nation under God!
Obama debates like a good fighter boxes, stay cool in round one, go for the midsection in round two, and then go for the head. I could see several times in the Presidents face where he knew Romney was spouting off on things that are going to get him in trouble in the next few days.
What I saw was Mitt Romney interrupting, refusing to follow the rules, insisting he got the last word, and going off topic to interject his well rehearsed talking points. Basically an entitled, elitist bully.
Best Moment: When Romney stated that he believes in regulations I could hear the sound of thousands of conservative sphincters puckering simultaneously.
As to President Obama, has everyone forgotten his debates with McCain and the entire "can't come off as an angry black man" discussion? Obama never brought out the knives four years ago which pissed off liberals and he didn't in this debate... pissing off the liberals. I don't think he'll bring them out next time either... it's not his style.
First Lehrer should have stayed in his nursing home, his days are OVER he was useless.
Obama did look as if he were drugged. He should have pushed Mittens on his lies and
mentioned "47" he let him off with all his rhetoric. Mittens did come across as the spoiled obnoxious bully that he is.
Next on has to be better.
I agree Romney with you that Romney took over from the moderator, actually insisted he be allowed to speak interrupting the President. The moderator was part of the problem. I feel the msnbc pundits piled on Obama somewhat unfairly instead of calling out Romney for flip flopping once again. I knew this was coming because lately in interviews he was stealing Obama's ideas.
Way to go Chris! Republican are such cry babies. "Let me finish" not answering your question. "Let me finish" misunderstanding you. "Let me finish" attacking you while pretending I'm being attacked. They are so obsessed with being the victim that they pick fights where they didn't exist. He could have answered with a simple, "yes, that is Rooney's plan". But instead he had to whine, ad-person-um attack! ad-person-um attack! So I don't blame Chris for hitting him with Giuliani's own hypocrisy on Government spending. If the mayor was going to cry about being attacked then Chris might as well attack him.
Why is no one mentioning that Romney said he want to kill Big Bird?
I can see the headline now, "Big yellow bird shot by Romney, claimed it was freeloading".
To those older folks remember Tricky Dick? Oh how Mitt reminded me of him. Lies and arrogance all wrapped up in one. did anyone look at his forced smile and smirk? We don't need another Tricky Dick (Richard Nixon) in the Oval office.
You are absolutely right. I have blocked out those terrible days in our country's past. It seems smirks and lies were a little more intolerable in those days... but that was a long time ago on black and white tv's.
Oh and forgot to say great job Chris! Thank you for bringing out yet another hypocrite to light. I love it when they get caught.
Chris Hayes, please stop being maddows little puppy. Take that stupid haircut and smirk off tv, Well done Rudy
Chris Hayes did everything but hide behind his mommy and scream, "Make the bad man go away." The fact that you people think he did a good job makes it clear where your heads are buried. I do get a kick out of reading your imbecilic thoughts, though. Keep up the bad work.
That was media at its worst. I watched last night and could not believe that hayes just took over like he did. This was such an obvious blatent setup between maddow and hayes it was sickening. I noticed that hayes had a stupid smirk and shot maddow a glance at the end. How unprofessional of these people. Not to mention the fact that maddow and hayes were talking under their breath and giggling like school children. Really, is this their idea of a professional interview? They ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Hayes needs to grow up and stop sucking his thumb. This was the worst, most biased interview I have ever seen. The muttering under his breath and the giggling between maddow and hayes made me want to throw up. This is journalism at its worst, not to mention that it was an obvious set up. these two should learn a little respect and how to do an HONEST interview. msnbc is getting over the top for me lately, the bias is out of control lately. I think they all need to regroup and get it together.
I suppose you don't necessarily support the First Amendment. I'm sure they regret not giving him a silk robe, soft slippers, a cigar and comfy recliner before letting him say whatever he wants without challengining any of the baloney he was spouting. But it's their show, their network is paying for the show and they get to say whatever they want. That's what a democracy is all about, no matter how uncomfortable it makes you feel. You know, freedom.
there isnt a journalist on msnbc, just skewed opinion vomitters
God Bless, Chris Hayes! He confronted that 911 vampire and showed him the truth. Still Guiliani lied. It's a very disturbing thing that Republicans lurk behind blatant lies and nothing seems to embarrass them.
They simply are a new animal that could care less if this country collapses upon itself.
what is your proof of this Seelye2?
There it is. The bottom line of the Republican myth: rich people need special tax privileges so they can create more jobs. But these Bush tax cuts for the rich have been in place during the entire Obama presidency. The most obvious question is also the simplest. If tax cuts to the wealthy increase the number of jobs, why hasn't that happened yet? The answer is also simple. It just plain doesn't work.
Pres. Obama should have pounced on that from Romney just as the MSNBC panel should have with Guillani. But the fog of war is real and makes people miss things.
If there is public proof that Guilani's firm benefited from public taxpayer funded ( ie, the beast that Guilianai said we shouldn't feed) work or contracts then he lied. SImple. I am sure that someone will look at that and we will know if Hayes overstepped or Guilianai lied.
I can guess which it is.
Either way, the point is still valid. Contracting private companies to provide security services is an important facet of anti-terrorism defenses. This is not "feeding the beast." Neither is education, transportation, infrastructure, health care, environmental protection and hosts of other essential services that only government can provide.
Your are absolutely right. But I think Hayes was also showcasing Guilianis hypocrisy.
Great job Chris...you've got" cohones" it's hard to debate someone who has no moral integrity...Just be sure not to get too deep in the gutter with these slime balls...Keep up the good work
