During Wednesday’s debate, Mitt Romney focused several talking points around the claim that “middle income Americans are being crushed” under President Obama’s policies. On Thursday’s The Ed Show, Ed Schultz asked James Hoffa, labor leader and General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, if he believes that’s true.
Hoffa said no way. “Let’s look at what’s going on," he said. "The economy’s coming back, we basically have people working. Teamsters are working, UAW members are working, the auto industry is thriving, all the different people that work in the plants are back to work, so we have hundreds of thousands of people who have their jobs back. So that’s good news. We’re on our way back and we need some more time, that’s all. And for him to say they’ve been crushed, that’s not true. If anybody crushed them, it’s his party that crashed the economy in ’08.”
Despite Romney’s strong, impassioned plea for middle class votes during the first debate, Schultz said he believes it won’t be enough to overcome the damage caused by the secret 47 percent video. Additional hurdles for Romney, Schultz said, include his record of opposition to policies like the auto bailout and increasing the minimum wage—plus his running mate’s budget plan, which critics say could be devastating for the poor and middle class.
Hoffa agreed with Schultz and said labor was not swayed by Romney’s debate performance. “For him to all of a sudden say he cares about the middle class, I believe that video about the 47 percent," he said. "That’s what he thinks about us. ... He is against the things that we stand for, and the things that basically are a safety net for America right now. And no matter what you saw last night, it was a big lie. He basically tried to remake himself last night, but you know, we know the real Mitt Romney.”

A report from the White House Council of Economic Advisers asserts that the president's economic stimulus package has sent more than $200 billion in tax relief and other benefits to mainly middle- and lower-income families since its passage.
Citizens for Tax Justice, a self-described non-partisan organization, released a report on Tuesday that read: "The 2009 economic stimulus bill actually reduced federal income taxes for tax year 2009 for 98 percent of all working families and individuals." This total includes the 95 percent of working families that will or have received tax credits in the range of $400 to $800.
The health care bill passed by the administration, meanwhile, includes a tax credit that could cover up to 35 percent of the premiums a small business pays to insure its workers. New durable goods orders in August fell by the most since the recession and a separate reading on the broader U.S. economy came in much weaker than expected. But weekly jobless claims sank to a two-month low, in a hopeful sign for the labor market.
New orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods in August fell by the most in 3 1/2 years, pointing to a sharp slowdown in factory activity even as a gauge of planned business spending rebounded.
The Commerce Department said on Thursday durable goods orders dived 13.2 percent, the largest drop since January 2009, when the economy was in the throes of a recession. Orders for July were revised down to show a 3.3 percent increase instead of the previously reported 4.1 percent gain.

ProgressNow New Mexico warned that the faulty poll challenger training “could potentially restrict the voting rights of as many as [one in eight] New Mexicans in November.”
She also claims that photo ID is needed sometimes, while the New Mexico Secretary of State has said that,
Am I the only one that’s had about enough of this war on democracy? The “True the Vote” nonsense and other accusations of voter fraud by the right wing (incidentally, all of the recent fraud scandals are by the right wing) are just excuses to lock minorities and others out of the election because it is well-known that they prefer to vote democratic (with, notably, their best interests).

It is true. Obama did poorly in the first debate. The reason is simple. He was suddenly confronted with a pack of lies delivered by a well seasoned liar. Pres. Obama was dumb-founded and had to decide if he would call Mittens a ball-faced liar on national TV or not? He chose not too sink that low. So he came off "quiet." I hope the Prez. can come back and see the rest of us also saw the lies. He needs to announce that he is the president of all the people as he has done. He also needs to take pride in the barbs that he is the food stamp president because he STOOD UP for the 47% who were needing the food stamps. He tried to help the elderly and disabled to purchase needed drugs and get medical care. There are Americans going hungry in this country. Food stamps are needed or starvation will spread.
How dare a millionaire, who never went to public school or missed a meal tell 47% of the American people that they have no right to expect food or medical assistance when they are in need. Mittens spends more in one night at a restaurant of "his quality" than most poor families get in food assistance in one month.
Mitts never went to bed with only a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in his stomach as that was all there was. To announce to his rich friends that the 47% do not count...that they need to take care of them selves...that they "are not his people", that he does not care about them... shows his true colors.
One day Mitt decided he was bored. He set out to prove a rich man can buy the white house. He hid his biggest "profits" in off shore banks and ran for president. But he has never had to suffer the pain of hunger or the despair of seeing your kids denied even the basics because you lost your job. Not all the 47% are there by choice. Many were forced into poverty by the total mismanagement of Bush. He took us into wars and plunged us into debt...then walked away.
Mitts needs more dollars for the military because he wants to invade Iran. He has said so. We do not need another war. We cannot afford another rich man who would let the poor, the elderly and the disadvantaged suffer to pay for his wars and the increased profits of his rich class of personal friends.
Obama put us first. He did not let millions go hungry to balance the budget. He reached out to the needs of THE PEOPLE, even the 47%. Many will find jobs as soon as they can...but we cannot let them starve until they do.

Still working: I am a retired 20 year veteran who served in the Persian Gulf. I am a voracious reader of military history and military policy issues. I have been for 30 plus years. I do not understand what Romney wants to do with an extra two trillion dollars in military spending that the Pentagon has not asked for. Romney has not explained to anyone how he will pay for this.
I have studied the Iranian situation for many years. Invading Iran will not work for the United States because they are too big and have a huge army. Iran's ability to launch ballistic missiles at oil infrastructure in the Persian Gulf is unstoppable even with U.S. anti-missile defenses in the region. The Iranians have so many short ranged ballistic missiles that they will simply overwhelm our defenses. The Iranians have cruise missiles on mobile launch platforms that will be hard to hit. These cruise missiles can blow supertankers out of the water. U.S. Navy ships would have a hard time staying in the Persian Gulf because the Iranians are also working on building hundreds of suicide speed boats with one ton warheads. These suicide boats can destroy modern warships like a carrier or U.S. Navy ship. These boats are hard to see in radar and hard to stop especially if they come in swarms from many directions simultaneously. Iran has active duty forces of about 550,000 backed by reserves of manpower of about 1.8 million for a total of at 2.3 million plus an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds force trained as terrorist fighters that numbers in the hundreds of thousands. The Iranians also run terrorist training camps where experts are trained on bomb making such as the high velocity explosive penetrator that can knock most armored vehicles. So Iranians know all about fighting as terrorists and urban guerrillas making any occupation of Iran a long drawn out bloody affair lasting for years. Iran also has vast quantities of chemical weapons including nerve gases that are highly lethal. Iran's nuclear program is mostly underground in concrete steel reinforced bunkers deep underground protected by modern Soviet surface-to-air missiles systems such as the TOR missile system.
Here is the bottom line: If we invade Iran we will face WW II Okinawa kamikaze casualties at sea and possibly Vietnam type casualties on land with a spike to $200 per barrel of oil. We also have to understand the Iran's vast terrorist network can strike throughout the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and even North America. We also have to remember that Iran's ballistic missiles can rapidly destroy oil infrastructure driving oil prices to at least $200 to $300 per barrel. We would end up fighting a trillion dollar plus war, suffering 50,000 casualties that will last for years all for a $200 barrel war while terrorism spreads through the Middle East, Africa, Europe and even another 9-11 attack here at home. The result is checkmate for America and the permanent rise of China and India as the superpowers of the 21st century.
Angela Merkel has this one right. Germany is building wind power, solar power, smart grids, biomass fuel systems, mass transit such as the ICE bullet train that connects most major German cities. Germany does not have to spend a $100 billion dollars annually for aircraft carrier task force groups in the Persian Gulf the Germans just build more green energy. Germany can get by with a much smaller military because Germany's energy sources are secure within their own borders. This is why President Obama is pushing green energy and bullet trains, its a national security issue. The problem is that Angela Merkel is a hell of a lot smarter than Mitt Romney and conservatives in the U.S.

Talking about shipping jobs overseas. In the debate POTUS said we give deductions for companies that ship jobs overseas. Romney said we don't give that deduction if so I need a new accountant. Therefore admitting that he has shipped jobs overseas.

The lies the having to ex out family(brother&sisters; as well everyone else) finally drove this our oldest 1st cousin to leave the mormon church. His wife, hard to believe did this too. There children? 2 still do and 2 have left. The 2 that have stayed the hate and lies they spew, wow!
I also worked with a grandson(he was 65then; had recently left) of an elder to the mormon church. He left the mormon church just as my cousin because of the the "lying" and hypocrisy of this there church.
Wish my mother my cousins aunt his father's(he died in 1965) best friend could have been alive for this. All the pain it caused for so many years within our family. :-(
Hoffa is partly correct, Teamsters and UAW Union Members are working, as are Public Sector employees. They should be Obama sent them Billions in Tax Payer dollars. What Hoffa did not say was that the Private Sector that Obama didn't give Billions of Tax Dollars to, isn't doing so well. If the Obama Administration subsidized the local store, garage, or resturaunt like he did the Unions and Government Employees perhaps the Private Sector would be recovering. Obama Policies support the People and Organizations that support Him and leave the rest of us to pay for it.
Every thinking person knows that just about everything Romney says is a lie, I really did not believe Romney would have the gall to flat-out lie during a nationally televised debate, but he did over and over. President Obama didn't make him pay for his lies, so, for a lot of people he was telling the truth. The President need to expose his lies, don't let him off the hook like he did at the last debate, and force him into lying to cover his last lie, until he has dug a hole that none of his lies can get him out of. After all these months of listening to Romney, one thing is perfectly clear, he couldn't stop lying if his life depended on it. I, personally think all President Obama needs to do is tell the American people what he has done, what he plans to do, and most importantly, prove beyond a shadow of doubt so that everybody knows, even die-hard republican voters that Romney has nothing, plain and simply put, he's a liar.
