The "unemployment rate" customarily reported in new stories is the U3 rate. It consists of the estimated number of people in the total work force who without a job, but who are looking for work. It is not the only rate for which the BLS releases numbers each month. It is cited by the media for consistency.

I would think by now, everybody knows it is not 100% accurate and does not, of itself, give an accurate sense of how the economy is doing.

And as to the evil Republicans intentionally slowing economic growth to aid their political fortunes: if they were so smart and wielded so much power, a rational person would have to ask how they let the nation fall into this economic sink hole in 2007 and 2008.

The job numbers are not great, but neither are they terrible, and they are certainly not the product of some political manipulation of the BLS.

For a margin of error that high compared to the value the confidence in the numbers has to be far below standard scientific values of around 95% or higher... Now that doesn't mean the data isn't correct, nor does it mean it was manipulated. It means it should be suspect and double checked.

Not so. Actually the head of the Department of Labor is a position appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. All of the upper and middle management are political appointees.

These reports were first issued in 1947. Each and every administration used data from the U-6 section to create these reports. The Obama Administration is the only one that uses the U-3 portion of the monthly data. The difference? The August and September U-6 numbers are the same: 14.7%. G W Bush had an average of 5.3% unemployment rate and W J Clinton;s was 5.15%. That is for an eight (8) years time span.

This is what most logical people are so bewildered about. We are not even keeping up with the eligible workers that come into the pool each month. Are you really that dull? Obama did release his tax returns, and they show a fraction of the income and assets of the Romneys, for heaven's sake. Senators make about 174,000 a year; the President makes about 400,000 a year. Michelle worked (yea, she's a Harvard law grad) and made a salary of about 200-300K a year her last couple of years. Obama wrote two books that were best sellers and made royalties from those. Despite all of this, Obama's income was piddling compared to the millions reported by Romney while he was joking about being "unemployed".

Regardless of integrity or spelling and grammar, none of this has anything to do with the unemployment numbers.

The BLS use a very precise detailed method using a huge data sample. It is of course, an estimate, but from a statistical standpoint it is going to be a pretty accurate reflection of reality. Skewing of the data is virtually impossible. Like any other survey based data, it can not guaranteed to be 100% accurate, but it is going to be very, very close.

Jack Welsh obviously doesn't have a clue how data is collected and is probably just like 99% of the population that really doesn't how data is collected and tabulated. Take 15 minutes and educate yourself on how the BLS produces these numbers. Once you understand how they do this, you will see that the numbers aren't manipulated. You will also see just how ridiculously complex it would be to do so.

You might debate some of the definitions, but you will see that regardless, the relative number from month to month has a high degree of accuracy built into the methodology.

The email from one of the people killed just hours before, pointed to a terrorist attack when he talked about the guards taking pictures of the Consulate. Why did Stevens ask for more security if he wasn't concerned? Stevens was much more aware of what was going on in Libya because he was actually there. The Secretary of State's office ignored his pleas. Then we have the DNC convention that touted (gloating) killing Bin Laden for an entire week. Then you have 9/11 where security is always beefed up, but wasn't. Obama was too busy campaigning to actually do his job.

The truth is that the defense contract employees aren't getting their pink slips until after the elections, Obama requested that they not give out the layoff notices despited the fact that the administration is asking those employers to break the WARN law about sixty days advance notice. Also, the administration has stated that they will cover any lawsuits as a result of adhering to their request. Now, isn't that interesting, especially when you factor in that the layoffs will be happening as a result of Obama's defense budget cuts.

If BIG government would get out of the way of small businesses and allow them to create the private sector jobs then you would see the real unemployment rate go down.

 THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION -- SEPTEMBER 2012

The unemployment rate decreased to 7.8 percent in September, and total nonfarm
payroll employment rose by 114,000, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported
today. Employment increased in health care and in transportation and warehousing
but changed little in most other major industries.  Plus 114,000 jobs does not represent .3% of the total jobs, of course comparing it to actual jobs would give you and actual percentage.  BLS should be BS.

Household Survey Data

The unemployment rate declined by 0.3 percentage point to 7.8 percent in September.
For the first 8 months of the year, the rate held within a narrow range of 8.1
and 8.3 percent. The number of unemployed persons, at 12.1 million, decreased by
456,000 in September. (See table A-1.) 12.1 million represents those who have filed for benefits only, not those who have run out of benefits and simply quit looking.

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (7.3 percent),
adult women (7.0 percent), and whites (7.0 percent) declined over the month.
The unemployment rates for teenagers (23.7 percent), blacks (13.4 percent), and
Hispanics (9.9 percent) were little changed. The jobless rate for Asians, at
4.8 percent (not seasonally adjusted), fell over the year. (See tables A-1, A-2,
and A-3.)

In September, the number of job losers and persons who completed temporary jobs
decreased by 468,000 to 6.5 million. (See table A-11.) 6.5 Million temporary jobs, I wonder if I should add those or subtract those to the 12.1 million, its add for sure.

The number of persons unemployed for less than 5 weeks declined by 302,000 over
the month to 2.5 million. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for
27 weeks or more) was little changed at 4.8 million and accounted for 40.1
percent of the unemployed. (See table A-12.)4.8m / 12.1m = 39.6% not 40.1%. Even if you took 12.1 and removed 465K you would have 4.8m/11.365m and that would = 42.2%.  The numbers are skewed. 

Total employment rose by 873,000 in September, following 3 months of little
change. The employment-population ratio increased by 0.4 percentage point to
58.7 percent, after edging down in the prior 2 months. The overall trend in
the employment-population ratio for this year has been flat. The civilian labor
force rose by 418,000 to 155.1 million in September, while the labor force
participation rate was little changed at 63.6 percent. (See table A-1.) 12.1m/155.1m = 7.8% where they got that number but an error rate of 400k, thats a huge error rate.

The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes
referred to as involuntary part-time workers) rose from 8.0 million in August
to 8.6 million in September. These individuals were working part time because
their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time
job. (See table A-8.)  Temp part time jobs is the new norm.

In September, 2.5 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force,
essentially unchanged from a year earlier. (These data are not seasonally
adjusted.) These individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and were
available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months.
They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work
in the 4 weeks preceding the survey. (See table A-16.) Ah here we go 2.5m were not counted.  Now why would you not count 2.5m people?  Does that mean 12.1 now becomes 14.6m?  If so then 14.6/155.1 = 9.4%

Among the marginally attached, there were 802,000 discouraged workers in
September, a decline of 235,000 from a year earlier. (These data are not
seasonally adjusted.) Discouraged workers are persons not currently looking
for work because they believe no jobs are available for them. The remaining
1.7 million persons marginally attached to the labor force in September had
not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey for reasons such
as school attendance or family responsibilities. (See table A-16.)

Establishment Survey Data

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 114,000 in September. In 2012,
employment growth has averaged 146,000 per month, compared with an average
monthly gain of 153,000 in 2011. In September, employment rose in health care
and in transportation and warehousing. (See table B-1.)

Health care added 44,000 jobs in September. Job gains continued in ambulatory
health care services (+30,000) and hospitals (+8,000). Over the past year,
employment in health care has risen by 295,000.

In September, employment increased by 17,000 in transportation and warehousing.
Within the industry, there were job gains in transit and ground passenger
transportation (+9,000) and in warehousing and storage (+4,000).

Employment in financial activities edged up in September (+13,000), reflecting
modest job growth in credit intermediation (+6,000) and real estate (+7,000).

Manufacturing employment edged down in September (-16,000). On net, manufacturing
employment has been unchanged since April. In September, job losses occurred
in computer and electronic products (-6,000) and in printing and related
activities (-3,000).

Employment in other major industries, including mining and logging, construction,
wholesale trade, retail trade, information, professional and business services,
leisure and hospitality, and government, showed little change over the month.

The average workweek for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls edged up by
0.1 hour to 34.5 hours in September. The manufacturing workweek edged up by
0.1 hour to 40.6 hours, and factory overtime was unchanged at 3.2 hours.
The average workweek for production and nonsupervisory employees on private
nonfarm payrolls was unchanged at 33.7 hours. (See tables B-2 and B-7.)

In September, average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm
payrolls rose by 7 cents to $23.58. Over the past 12 months, average hourly
earnings have risen by 1.8 percent. In September, average hourly earnings of
private-sector production and nonsupervisory employees increased by 5 cents
to $19.81. (See tables B-3 and B-8.)

The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for July was revised from
+141,000 to +181,000, and the change for August was revised from +96,000 to
+142,000.
