During Wednesday's presidential debate, Mitt Romney said that the Obama administration has invested $90 billion into green jobs, and that half of the companies receiving that money have subsequently gone out of business. On Sunday's Up with Chris Hayes, host Chris Hayes graded both those claims false.
"Never mind that $90 billion hasn't even been spent yet," he said. "Never mind that only about $34 billion of it was allocated for that kind of clean energy business loans, and never mind the Energy Department has only approved $16 billion worth of those loans. Never mind the Romney campaign said later he was only talking about businesses that got those loans in the first year, and never mind that only three businesses actually went under. Forget all that, and you are still left with the fact that the most government will be on the hook for those businesses that went under is an estimated $600 million."
"Or, roughly equal to half of $90 billion," Hayes added wryly.
Though Romney is widely regarded as the victor of the first presidential debate, NPR reports that he's "getting dinged more ... by the fact checkers" (in part because he "made more factual assertions"). MSNBC contributor Ezra Klein said Romney often attempted to hide within "pockets of vagueness" throughout the debate.

As we move towards the next presidential debate all of Romney's fantasies and now-proven-false claims will become part of the microscope trained on him and Paul Ryan as a result of the 1st debate. Obama may have played his cards a little too close to the vest while the spotlight's glare was focused exclusively on Romney. Who doesn't like Big Bird, really?
I'm fascinated by this debate strategy -- when someone challenges your stated position, simply deny that position and take a new one; then make up numbers as you challenge your opponent.
For 90 minutes, with 60 million people watching, you can befuddle your opponent (and of course the viewers), appear strong and affirmative, even presidential, and declare "victory".
We have spent many years judging the debates on the style and presentation, and not on the content. Therefore, this strategy -- lie, lie again, as long as you do it confidently -- makes perfect sense.
Should Obama/Biden adopt this strategy? Or should they continue to argue facts and truth and history?
Should they bring a knife to a gunfight? Or should they bring a gun?
Didn"t expect anything different from Mitt he is a natural born liar. I only hope people can see through him, he is a sheep in wools clothing watch out.
Do we need debates if they only foster falsehoods? The ads (for both parties) are a disgrace. Tell me what you can do for the country specifically and I will make a decision to vote for the party that gives me the best details and gains my confidence as a voter. At this point, Mitt Romney has destroyed any credibility with his 47% statement, regardless of his apology, it was stated to a group of people who are very much like him. He doesn't understand the working class, he is too far removed from them.
I hope the American people will not listen to the people who are trying to make this man Romney credible. They are all over TV today including Meet the Press, trying to wring another few miles out of his bad behavior in the debate. He simply does not tell the truth and cannot be trusted.
Honesty and ethics USED to matter; apparently now, if you "LOOK" sincere while lying your A$$ off, you can hornswoggle a good third of the population. (JUST because it's what they want to hear, they HOPE it's true....)
What does this Kid called Gabby Hayes know, according to Rush?
Lehrer says he was ‘effective presidential debate>>Sorry for the Last Hooray for Jimmy Lehrei, Bobby Shuffler, Danny Rathernot and Chris Tingle and the MSNBC LOCKUP Seven.
It boggles the mind, How can anyone not be concerned about Mitty's ability to call Fiction fact? He seems to be able to lie on the drop of the dime...Yet, they want this person to represent the United States of America? I just do not get it...
