Mitt Romney moved ahead or narrowed the lead held by President Obama in several national polls that took place in the days after the first presidential debate in which the Republican candidate's performance was widely praised.
A Pew Research Center poll on Monday showed Romney ahead of Obama by four points. Previously the president had led by eight points in that poll. Rasmussen also gave Romney the edge in its most recent poll (49% to 47%), as did a poll conducted by Public Policy Polling.
A Gallup poll from directly after the debate showed the two candidates tied at 47% each, though its daily tracking continues to show a five-point lead by Obama.
While the Romney campaign might celebrate its candidate's improvement, many politicos and pollsters said it simply reflects the continued tightness of a competitive presidential race.
"Regardless of what the [poll] variations might be, it’s a close race," said Anne Kornblut, deputy national politics editor of The Washington Post, on MSNBC's Jansing & Co. Tuesday. "The 'October Surprise' everyone always talks about is that we're back to where we were in the spring. It's a very close race."
Frank Newport, editor-in-chief of Gallup Poll, added that Obama is already regaining some of the ground he lost in the immediate aftermath of his first head-to-head debate with Romney.
"Romney definitely got a significant boost on Thursday and Friday of last week, but when we monitor our data from Saturday and Sunday, and actually I was just looking at our numbers from last night, Obama is picking back up again," he explained on Jansing & Co. Tuesday.
New daily polling data is expected from Gallup at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
"We think that continuation of a huge move by Romney is not in the data," Newport added. "It’s looking like the race among registered voters is still tilting slightly in Obama’s favor. Among likely voters, we would think Romney would probably be even or have a very slight lead."

coffeedrip12345 is a total brain wizard isn't he ? make like a republican and cut yourself from the human race.
Romney at VMI; I'm gonna do exactly what Obama is doing, but with this major, major difference... I'm gonna grimace while doing the same things. Oh, yea, one more thing... I'm gonna spend One Trillion on defense, Why? because it sounds really, really strong. What that? don't think that's a good reason? Why are you democrat socialist fascists always supporting terrorists?
I keep wondering about all of these polls. Do polls influence other polls? How much does media play in polls vs how the people actually thought when they actually saw an event, such as a debate? The biggest ethical question is which influences the people more, style or substance? Then there is the question of how responsible is the media for investigating and clarifing facts and the lack of truth in points? What is information and what is propaganda? What is the ethics on the subtle nods that an anchor gives to one point or another, without clearly identifing the anchor's own point of view? Where is the line made, to create balance, when the center point moves, on a seemingly daily basis? Finally, what influence does Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc. have of media, which, in turn, influences the people who participate in the polls? Seems that this is an endless pit of confusion that demands a considerable amount of journalistic research.
It is so sad that all you Liberals hopes rest on the shoulders of old senile uncle gaffe a minute Joe
Do you Libs actually think you have a chance with Bidden hell he cant even give a speech unchallenged with out tripping all over himself just think whats going to happen when he gets challenged
Romney finally had a platform that allowed him to get his message out to the American people without the media putting a spin on it and taking things he said out of context.. some have responded to his message and I am sure more are going to follow as we move through this last month. If the President wants to make his case he better do it instead of referring back to his stump speech and slogans.. that tactic may have worked in 2008, but it's not going to work this time.
I find the polls very hard to believe. Could we actually have a citizenry so fickle and stupid that one episode of dead on lying could make them change their minds about who to vote for?? If that is so maybe we do need to educate our citizens better before they are allowed to vote. This is like changing your mind because a voter does not like the new hair cut of the politician or the color of his wife's dress. And I guess if I even suggest that Romney lies I become a Democrat Socialist Fascist. Message to joearea. Fascist is to the right and Nazism is to the far right like Hitler. Educate yourself. Not calling anyone names just sayin
