New York Times poll analyst Nate Silver said Tuesday night on The Rachel Maddow Show that President Obama still has an edge in the 2012 election, but has lost the significant he held during the period between the Democratic convention and the first debate.
"It's become clear that Romney got a three or four point bounce from the debate," Silver said. The race is as close as it has been all year, he added. (Romney is widely regarded to have won the debate, a position borne out by recent polling.)
Furthermore, Republican enthusiasm to defeat Obama, combined with Democratic despondence after the debate, could make the president's prospects even gloomier. The enthusiasm gap "might be enough to push Romney over the top," said Silver.
Liberals shouldn't panic, though—yet. "I'm a little skeptical that it's actually tied right now, based on the fact that Obama still has a lead in the majority of the swing state polls that we've seen," Silver said. If polls continue to show a Romney surge, however, "panic will be an appropriate response."

I did not like the format of the debate. The moderator normally holds the candidate accountable for their statements, as the unbias keeper of facts. But, letting the candidates just fight it out and allowing the viewers to determine who is telling the truth is horrible.

TaJuan, Even though Romney won the debate on form ( The POTUS did have a really bad night, form wise ) Telling the truth had nothing to do with winning. All of the fact checkers, including from within the Romeny camp have been clear that Romney LIED. Unfortunately, in this low information country and with Faux News fueling the lies, TRUTH isn't the issue with many. The President told the truth, Romney lied, and lied and lied but won ! We can't let that happen with the election.
Obama is not out by a long shot. Wait till the next debate and when all the votes from the swing states come in, as I believe that by far Obama will win this election. I'm not in a panic, there are still two more debates and I think President Obama will do a lot better from now on. And VP J. Biden will debate Thurs. And just maybe Romneys lies will catch up to him, how many times can he lie and flip flop? And who knows enough people really love Big Bird, they will dislike Romney and not vote for him. I think he was serious about cutting funding for PBS....
Of course Romney was serious about cutting funding to PBS. It was not the first time that he stated that he would cut funding to PBS either, just like him (and T'Ryan) stating on various other occasions that he would eliminate/ close Planned Parenthood. That is because he as well as Ryan are anti-reproductive rights/ choice, anti public safety nets for the masses. He also stated he would repeal Obama care/ACA too.
Was just watching the Joy Behar program, "Say Anything". One of the guests would not shut up, she just kept on talking and blathering on, not giving the other guest the opportunity to speak or finish her whatever she was saying. She even cut off the Behar. LOL
This twit was obnoxiously and incessantly spewing forth her skewed versions of events from the presidential debate - where you know Romney won because, apparently according to her, all the talking heads even the one -Dana somebody or other who supposedly simply loooove Obama - said he did, (LOL) to her view on Ann Romney' s horse interaction on GMA today. Per her it did not bring up the reminder of the Romney's dressage horse, because Mrs R so needed it to treat her MS- blah blah blah and apparently the horse did not remind anyone of those Olympic sized Romney gaffs of this past summer... LOL Anyhoo her blog was supposedly titled conservative chick or something like that. Can't recall her name though.
Had to keep muting the program because this woman was really irritating with her obnoxious incessant chatter/gum flapping. It was a one woman show. LOL.
It was this performance by this woman that reminded me why I found the Romney debate performance super irritating and off putting and in which the sound had to be muted too at intervals too especially when he interacted with/browbeat Leher. LOL

I get tired of hearing everyone saying how Romney won. Based on what? # of lies, # zingers, # of times being arrogant, interrupting and disrespectful? Is this how we measure a leader? Why isn't anyone raging about his overbearing, disrespectful approach? Had Obama gone head to head in the same style, it would have been a three way prize fight between Romney, Lehrer and Obama. Like a bunch of sophomore boys with too much testosterone and Red Bulls. I think Obama maintained some dignity at least and stuck to the facts. Yes, he should have been more assertive, but imagine Romney discussing issues with foreign leaders with that know-it all-disrespectful attitude? He is not presidental material after that performance it was obvious to me at least.

I think people need to realize that all the polls, and posts, people use or watch, doesn't really tell the truth about who really is wining, or will win? There was only 90 minutes to the debate the moderator could only do so much. I commend him for staying in the background and letting the candidates hammer out their differences...Romney had one falsehood and 4 half-truths...Obama had 4 falsehoods and one half truth...Biden is supposedly a great debater as well as Ryan...but if Ryan can get under his skin biden can lose his temper and Ryan will sink him....
Romney was arrogant, rude, disrespectful from the git go. I was appalled. Yes, Obama should have been more assertive, but he is not by nature an attack dog. I am upset that everyone says Romney "won" What is that based on a fight strategy? # of interruptions, # of zingers, # of lies. Obama at least tried to stick to the facts and had some civility to him. After the debate, I do not think Romney is presidential material. I agree with you that Romney was rude and lied about everything, He did his usual flip flop and did not say what he even said the day before. But I do think we needed a more forceful moderater who did not take the disrespect. He should have made Romney stop talking and resume the debate. But he let Romney run the show, and that is what it was, a pump his chest me tarzan rant of lies. He needs to go home to Bain capital and stay there.I still don't know why so many believe him no matter what he says. I can't stand to listen to him lie over and over and get away with it.....
Romney certainly won the #lies contest hands down. The count was something like 27 or 28 in his 38 minutes. Incredible, record-breaking speed-lying. Ha. I don't know where anyone got the one falsehood and 4 half truths and the other way around for Obama. I would bet a pile-o-cash it was one of the RWNJ websites.
Any seniors who are voting for the Vulture/Voucher team should be ashamed of themselves - especially if they are drawing social security and medicare benefits now. They would deny the group coming up behind them these same life-sustaining programs. Who knows? Many of them are doing this to their own kids!
The poor who vote for the V/V team have every right to see their 'dependency' programs be eliminated as well. It would really be a shame, though, if others who did not play the guilty role had to suffer along with them.

Having listened to the debate I find it hard to believe that Romney won anything, if anything he sounded and acted ignorant and unprincipled imo. Everything he stated in the debate was the opposite of what he was saying on the stump and during the primaries. His explainations of what he meant by what ever was always the opposite of what he stated before.
The media discription of President Obama during the debate was equally ignorant, and stupid. Did they think the President was going to get all pugnatious like Romney was trying to be?
Their critique that the President had his head down, looked uninterested and unengaged was not what was observed by some of us who watched the debate for ourselves. If anything we wondered what these talking heads were talking about after the debate, and why all of a sudden they were beating up on the President for listening keenly and seem to be taking notes for himself.
One thing for sure is that Pres Obama gave former Gov Romney no aid or assistance talking points wise. This the President did on purpose. LOL Romney had to come up with his own talking points, as in the past he would simply be against any thing that the President was for.
That was also why although he won the coin toss he chose for the President to go first. This way he - Romney- could simply say the opposite of whatever the Pres said or take it out of context etc and spin it to meet his own questionable views/politics.
The problem was that the President simply kept to his principles and policies that he has been talking about for the longest time. To which Romney went over board trying to agitate the President who did not take the bait. LOL If anything Romney sounded pushy, and desperate, in trying to get a rise out of the Prez who simply, firmly did not return the frantic favour.
It was like Gov Romney was playing checkers, busily, loudly and rashly saying ....'king me', to the point where he went overboard to show how alpha male he was , that he was overbearing to Lehrer and he even told Lehrer he would be firing him (as well as bigbird) from his job with PBS by defunding PBS.
That was uncalled for the whole PBS deal, the only thing it showed was how petty Gov Romney was imo. It seem to have been about putting Lehrer in his place, showing who was top dawg so to speak. Now he has to defend his stance on the various policies that he put forth as if these were always his beliefs, when all one has to do is go back to the not so distant past and there he was saying the opposite.
It seem like some in the media are still trying to convince themselves and others that their initial observation of the first debate with the Pres supposedly not being engaged etc , while the thing about Romney being engaged in the debate .... is correct.

I saw no rudeness in Romney. And he is the only one in the debate that discussed real policy. Obama had nothing. Now his only talking point is Big Bird. With all of the stuff going on in the world, and Big Bird is what he wants to talk about? I guess I would do that too in his shoes.

I refuse to let the smoke screen of debates get in the way of the two candidates' policies. Gov. Romney has changed his stance so often that I am not sure he knows where he stands. I know that the president is looking out for the middle class, instead of the top 2%. If I was a millionaire, Romney would get my vote. He only cares about those people. The rest of us are beneath him. I don't think Ronald Reagan would get the support of the Republicans this election, they have gone back so far to the right. Dixie seems to be rising out of the ashes!

I've seen some top 5 or top 10 lies lists, but they haven't pushed that as much as they have the horse race aspect. It's how they make their money. They still have to be careful and watch what is going on, because those what you call republicans, are trying to do anything to win this election! I say they bring out the national guard to make sure everyone vote is counted, and to watch those crooks! I viewed the debate, not just during the televised debate, but two times thereafter, and I have come to the conclusion that President Obama has a failing, when speaking in this forum. He probably even thought he had won the debate, because he expects 'everyone' to be able to understand as he does. In other words, he believes/believed the viewing public was intelligent enough to spot the misrepresentations that Romney espoused during the debate. Unfortunately, the general public did not pick up on Romney's misrepresentations. I felt President Obama was doing very well, until his final comment, and there is where he ultimately lost the debate. It appeared he was confident he had already acquitted himself sufficiently to have won the debate, by pointing to Romney's obvious flip flops and that he needed to do nothing more. Big mistake.
He relys on the teleprompter solely for his speeches that someone else writes so it comes accross a scripted rather than spontaneous or genuine. Romney didn't win the debate. The lack of a pre planned speech and a Teleprompter did.
Another thing that hurts him, buzz words and phrases that get over used and get beaten to death that define him as phony. That doesn't hurt him with his base though, the 13-18 year olds.
