With the election approaching, some corporate CEOS are pulling out all the stops to pressure their employees about what they do in the voting booth.
On The Ed Show Wednesday, Ed counted off the examples:
• Robert Murray of Murray Enterprises in Ohio earlier this summer forced miners to attend a Mitt Romney rally without pay, some miners have charged. The Federal Election Commission is probing the episode. Murray later went on Fox News and made the bizarre claim that President Obama wants to pass legislation that would pay for people's electric bills—provoking laughter even from his host.
• David Siegel, a Florida real-estate mogul who's building the biggest mansion in America, told employees in a company email they should vote for Romney,, adding that he'd lose motivation to work if Obama was re-elected.
• The Koch brothers sent thousands of employees a list of their favored candidates.
• And as Ed reported Monday, Richard Lacks of Lacks Enterprises, a Michigan auto-parts company, told employees in a recent email that they should “vote to improve your standard of living”by opposing Obama.
Of course, as Ed noted, it's hardly surprising these multi-millionaires would favor Romney. He wants to cut their taxes and deregulate their industries.
Robert Reich, an MSNBC contributor and former Labor Secretary, pointed out that taxes were lower on these CEOs in the for much of the 20th century. And he added:
These people seem to have no patriotic sense. I mean they are part of a society. They have some obligations to society. And yet they are saying, I don't want to be taxed, and if I'm taxed then I'm going to take it out on all of you, who have less job security than they've ever had, whose wages continue to drop, and whose homes are now worth 30% less than they were before.

Then pays no taxes on 5 billion dollars of 2010 profit(all booked in overseas accounts) with no outrage from President Obama nor Ed Schultz who's paycheck is 49% paid by General Electric via NBC.

@towhomitmay I have 9 employees, have been in business for over 10 years now. I am the small business and as the owner of my own LLC. those taxes are filed for me as an individual. I pay all the taxes on that business and what is left over is mine. The taxes my LLC. pays is more than twice my take home and then I get to pay taxes again on my take home. You have now clue what you are talking about. Most companies work on a percentage bases for their employee compensation ( as I do) the more gross ( not net) income my company makes the more my employees take home. They know what that % is from day one, if they don't like it they can work somewhere else or start their own business. However, with all the the new regulations that have been put into place it will be hard for them to do a new startup.

These CEOs' are akin to the church pastors, in the previous decade, when they were telling their flock, "if you don't vote for George Bush, you can not come back into this church" Those words did grave damage to Christianity, churches and the constitution. These CEOs are doing grave damage to American values, and the constitution, while violating OUR laws, and they are stomping on the American workers who have given them their riches, leading them to become more and more greedy. They need to go! Siemens has notified Fort Madison that it will lay off 407 of the 660 workers at the blade manufacturing plant that is one of the five largest employers in the city.
Siemens said the layoff is in response to uncertainties surrounding the wind industry with the pending expiration of the 2.2 cents per kilowatt hour production tax credit Dec. 31. No action is expected by congress until after the November election.
Siemens spokesperson Melanie Forbrick says 407 employees will be laid off at the Fort Madison plant. A total of 220 will remain at the plant, which has 600,000 square feet.
The layoff will be the second in Iowa this year. Clipper Windpower in Cedar Rapids reduced its workforce there by 76 workers of its 300 employees beginning on Aug. 27.
Siemens has been the major supplier of blades for MidAmerican Energy's 1,000 megawatt expansion of its wind capacity in Iowa in the last two years.
In 2008, Siemens supplied 76 blades for MidAmerican's Adair wind project in Iowa. In late 2010, Siemens received its largest wind order ever for 258 wind turbines for MidAmerican Energy's 593.4-megawatt Iowa wind expansion projects located in Adams, Adair, Calhoun, Cass, Marshall and Pocahontas counties.
This year Siemens provided the turbines for 176 wind turbines constructed at three sites in Iowa this year.
Wind energy interests have warned that job losses are inevitable if the 2.2 cents per kilowatt hour production tax credit is not renewed by congress before its Dec. 31 expiration.
"We said this would happen, and there likely will be more layoffs if the production tax credit isn't renewed," said Harold Prior, president of the Iowa Wind Energy Association.
Iowa has wind manufacturing plants at Fort Madison, West Branch, Cedar Rapids and Newton that employ about 6,000 workers, according to the American Wind Energy Association.
U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley said that the tax credit renewal is part of a package of so-called "extenders," also including the $1 per gallon tax credit for biodiesel, that are to be taken up by congress after the November election.
"Unfortunately, it won't come fast enough to prevent layoffs," Grassley said Tuesday.
Iowa is the nation's second largest wind generating state, with a capacity of about 4,500 megawatts.
Fort Madison is about 90 miles south of Iowa City, in the southeast corner of the state.

On 1/1/13 the estate tax alone on a 5 million dollar estate will be about 2.2 million. On top of that there could be additional income taxes.

Gee, whoey, you must have missed the 20th century. A whole host of regimes turned their ideology and leaders into gods. Some where overtly anti-religious (international socialism) and some less overt (National Socialism). But all substituted the state and its leaders for the more traditional religious devotion. It is no accident that one of the core differences in American society between the left and right is religious observance by the right and non-observance by the left.

Sec Clinton, at the time of the GOP security cuts, said we would be sorry for these cuts. The GOP don't care. Theres a Democrat in the WH so it's time they must instantly balance the budget at all costs. Never fails. Every time a Dem has been in the WH, thats the only thing the GOP cares about. Good point Larry, the House GOP admits to cutting the security budget for the State Department's overseas consulates and embassies. It is doubtful that increased security would have made much difference against a well organized terrorist attack. I would prefer the old system of having trained Marines guarding our embassies again vice civilian contractors who are more expensive. We also have to remember, an embassy is not a fortress. An embassy is a civilian office building where the public and private affairs of the U.S. government are conducted in that host country. A host country is responsible for security of our embassies and consulates including their workers and their families. If the host country refuses to provide adequate security for whatever reason, we probably are not wanted in that country anyway and should go home until the host country wants us back again.
